Course Description
This course offers a general introduction to basic data manipulation skills and techniques used with spreadsheets such as editing, computing, and charting. It is a course designed for the new Excel 2002 user. This course can be completed entirely online. You will use WebCT, which is an online course management tool used by many institutions for professional training. You may complete all assignments at home or at work. You will never need to come to campus to complete this course. Directions for all assignments will be given online or via Email. Your assignments will be submitted through the WebCT Assignment Dropbox. Quizzes and tests will be taken online. You will communicate with your instructor via Email or telephone.
Prerequisites
CAOS 90G Computer Literacy (IBM) or CAOS 100G Orientation to the IBM PC or equivalent; CAOS 102K (Microsoft Windows 2000) or CAOS 102L (Microsoft Windows XP/2002) is recommended.

A Message from Your Instructor
Hi, welcome to the Excel 2002 online class. I look forward to working with you and hope you have an enjoyable online experience. I will guide your learning and assist you in understanding the basic principles of preparing Excel worksheets. This course is designed for the novice Excel 2002 user. However, it is essential that you have some experience using Email and Internet browsers in order to successfully complete this course. I hope you enjoy this course and develop the basic skills to create your own worksheets for personal and business use.
You will successfully complete this course if you work daily or weekly in WebCT, and complete all course assignments and tests by the due dates. Please remember, all assignments and tests must be completed with a minimum accuracy grade of 70%.
Whenever you have questions about the course or a particular exercise or assignment, please contact me. Use my personal Email account. It will be the fastest way to communicate with me. You can also contact me by Emailing me directly through WebCT, your online course training system. If you prefer, you can call me and leave a message. I will return your call as soon as I can. If you feel you need to meet with me, please contact me to set up an appointment.

Course Requirements
1. Before reading any further, print these pages. If you decide to enroll in the class, you will need the instructions given on these pages.
2. Be prepared to spend at least 6 hours per week using and studying course materials and participating in online activities.
3. Complete the Online Orientation and submit the Student Information Form by 12 noon on Friday, January 12. The Online Orientation can be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu
4. There is no Face-to-Face Orientation for this course.
5. Email me no later than Saturday, January 13, introducing yourself and indicating which Internet browser you will be using for your course.
6. Purchase your course materials.
7. Complete reading assignments.
8. Complete chapter exercises.
9. Complete and submit all assignments by the due dates.
10. Complete two online Theory Quizzes with a minimum score of 70% per test.
11. Complete a Midterm Performance Assessment and a Final Performance Assessment Test with a minimum completion score of 70% accuracy.
Hardware/Software Requirements
1. You must have access to an IBM/PC compatible computer with an Internet connection and a CD/ROM drive.
2. You cannot use a Macintosh computer for this class.
3. You must have your own Email address.
4. Your Internet browser must either be Netscape or Internet Explorer.
5. If your Internet provider is AOL, that's okay. You can logon to the Internet with AOL; however, use either Netscape or Internet Explorer as your browser.
6. Do not use AOL's default browser; you'll have problems using WebCT.
7. You must have access to the Microsoft Office XP suite, Excel 2002 software.

Required Text: Microsoft Excel 2002, Benchmark Series, N. Rutkosky. Your textbook will include a CD/ROM with data files. Approximate cost of this textbook is $75.

Logon to your Excel Online Website
1. Enrolled students are required to follow the directions below to logon to the online Excel course.
2. Through your browser, key http://cvc.webct.com/ into the Address or Location text box. Press Enter. This is your WebCT online class site.
3. Click on the link for First Time Users and click on De Anza College in the column on the left of the page. Then, follow the directions for logging on.
4. Type in your WebCT ID that consists of the first two letters of your first name and the first two letters of your last name, plus the last four digits of your Student ID number.
For example, Julia Chow, 222226789, would logon as:
USERNAME: JUCH6789
Important: Use all capitals. Do not use spaces or symbols.
5. Press the Tab key to go to the Password section. Type in the word STUDENT in all capital letters and click OK.
6. If you are asked to change your password, type in your old password, STUDENT. Then, press the Tab key and type in a new six-letter password of your choosing.
7. Confirm your new password. Then, click on the Update Password link at the bottom left of your screen.
8. Set up a password hint if you wish, or press Cancel.
9. Write down your Username and Password. You must remember them to logon to your class. I do not have access to student passwords.
10. Click on CAOS 93AL, C. Wilson.

How to Begin your Online Course
You will see several icons on the Homepage which include Class Information, Course Content, Student Tools, Course Materials, Communication Tools, Assessment Tools, Syllabus, and Assignments. Some of these items, plus other items, will appear listed under the Course Menu in your Navigation Bar on the left-hand side of your screen. Not all of these items are active at this time. Click on the active icons on the Homepage to explore their contents. Click on Course Objectives and Course Overview under Course Materials. Print these pages. In addition, click the Course Content icon and print the Chapter 1 information.
When you are redy to stop working on WebCT, simply close your browser.
Now, read the pages you have printed. Next, read your textbook and complete the exercises and assessments for Chapter 1. IMPORTANT: Be sure you name your files as indicated in your Chapter 1 assignment sheet, i.e., C01SA01, C01SA02, etc. WebCT will not recognize other filenames when you use the Assignment Dropbox. In addition, WebCT will not accept filenames with spaces or characters other than letters or numbers.
Notice in Chapter 1 that each assessment that you are to turn in for evaluation has a specific grading criteria. This grading criteria will tell you what I will be looking for when I evaluate each of your assessments. Be sure you follow the directions I have given you for each assessment. My directions supersede the directions in your textbook. Each assessment is worth a total of 20 points. You must receive a minimum of 14 points per each assessment in order to successfully complete this course.
You must complete each course assessment by the due date indicated in this syllabus. Assessments must be submitted via the WebCT Assignment Dropbox. There is no limit on the number of assignments you may submit each day.
Managing your Excel Files
I suggest you create a folder on your desktop called Excel Online Course. Inside this folder be sure you create folders for Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. Save your assessments in these folders. This way you'll be able to quickly find the assignment files you want to submit for evaluation.
Submitting Assignments
When you complete an assessment, print it out and check it with the grading criteria for that assignment. If you feel your assessment is correct and wish to submit it for evaluation, follow the steps below:
1. In WebCT go to the Homepage and click the Assessment Tools icon.
2. Next, click the Assignment Dropbox.
3. Click the assignment you want to submit (example: C01SA01).
4. Now, click Student Files.
5. Click Upload.
6. Click Browse to locate the file on your computer which you wish to submit for grading.
7. Once you locate the file you wish to submit for grading, click on the file name twice to select and open the file.
8. The name of the file you wish to submit for grading should now appear in the FileName text box. Submit only one assignment at a time.
9. Click Upload to upload your file.
10. Click the Return to Assignment hyperlink.
11. To submit your assignment, click Submit Assignment.
12. The Submit Assignment screen reappears. Click Submit Assignment a second time.
13. A confirmation screen appears with the message, "Confirm: Assignment will be submitted. Proceed?" click OK.
14. The Assignment screen reappears with the message Not Graded, appearing in the Status column of the assignment you submitted for grading.
15. After I grade your assignment, the Not Graded message changes to Graded. Your grade will now appear in the Grade column. Click the hyperlink to view my comments about your work.
