COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course you will learn how to use a personal computer using an easy, interactive learning tool called Train and Assess IT for Office 2003. This tool will enable you to learn through the internet the following: Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook) Microsoft's Operating Sytem (XT), learn about the internet and the parts of the computer. You do NOT need to have the above software installed on your computer.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to use a personal computer. You will be able to use the following:
Parts of a computer
- Windows Operating System
- Word
- Excel
- Access
- Powerpoint
- Outlook (Email)
- About the internet
PREREQUISITES
You must know how to use a mouse and how to insert a CD into a CD ROM drive. You must have internet access and have a personal e-mail account. If you do not know how to perform these tasks, you should enroll in the self-paced course instead so that you can work in the CAOS lab and get personal attention from an instructor.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURES (For Students NOT Yet Registered Or Wait Listed)
If you are registering BEFORE classes begin (recommended), you can apply and register using the internet at http://www.deanza.fhda.edu/. Select "Apply and Register" on the menu bar at the top of the page. Then you should take the On-Line orientation--you can skip much of the information in the on-line orientation. (Online Orientation may be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/.
If you are registering AFTER classes have begun and the class is still open WITH NO WAIT LIST, E-MAIL me giving me your name to receive a registration approval number that will allow you to add using the internet. Once you have this number, take the On-Line Orientation--you can skip much of the information in the on-line orientation; (Online Orientation may be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/). E-mail me when you have added the class.
If you are on the WAIT LIST: E-mail me at the above e-mail address on THURSDAY of the first week of school, and I will let you know if there are any no-shows. If there is room in the class, I will send you a registration # to register for the course on-line. I suggest that you take the On-Line Orientation--you can skip much of the information in the on-line orientation; (Online Orientation may be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/). The first assignment in the course for week 1 is pretty short so you should have no problem catching up if you're accepted into the class late.
ON-LINE ORIENTATION
All students should complete the on-line orientation by THURSDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL, unless special permission has been obtained from the instructor. You can skip much of the information in the on-line orientation. You MUST complete the Student Information Form which is Part 3 of the orientation.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- You must enter your on-line course BY THURSDAY of the first week of school and do the first E-MAIL ASSIGNMENT. If you have problems getting into the course, e-mail me before THURSDAY.
- You must complete the Online Orientation and submit the Student Information Form by Thursday of the FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL. (Online Orientation may be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/. If you have problems accessing the on-line orientation, please contact the following person and let him know: TechHelp@dadistance.fhda.edu or at 408 864-8969 (M-Thurs 8:30-7:00) Friday until noon. Please e-mail if you still have problems.
- You will spend about 3 hours per week or less using and studying the course materials. It is ESSENTIAL that you enter your on-line course each week to obtain your Assignment for that week!
COURSE MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT
Computer/Software/Web Requirements:
Email: It is required that you have access to a computer that provides you with your own e-mail address and with which you can send and receive e-mail.
Web Access/Browsers: You must have a computer which allows you to browse the World Wide Web. Internet Explorer version 5.01 through version 6.0. DSL IS RECOMMENDED AS DIAL UP MAY BE MUCH TOO SLOW!
Hardware requirements: A PC (no Macintosh). You must have a CD-ROM drive. See hardware requirements in the Train and Assess It Office 2003 packet that you must purchase at the bookstore: Pentium II class or higher CPU, 450mHz or faster, 32 bit operating system, Windows 98, 2000, Milennium, or Windows XP, 64MB RAM, 800X600 or great resolution, 256 colors or greater. Sound card and speakers.
Software: None. Important: DO NOT PURCHASE A USED BOOK. In the Train and Assess IT for Office 2003 (ISBN 0-13-234243-X)packet that you will purchase at the bookstore, you will be provided a CD-ROM which you will load on your computer.
Step-by-step instructions for using the CD-ROM #1 will be given later in this syllabus.
If you do not have access to the above, then you should enroll in the self-paced course on campus. Note, although the package says 2003, you will actually be learning XP.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS/MATERIALS
Textbook: Train and Assess IT Office 2003 (ISBN: 0-13-234243-X) . Prentice Hall Publishing Company. Important: DO NOT PURCHASE A USED BOOK. THE BOOK COMES WITH AN ACCESS CODE WHICH CAN ONLY BE USED ONCE. The CD ROM #1 and manual that comes with it will provide you with directions to load the required software and to enter the course. YOU WON'T USE DISK 2. IMPORTANT: AT THE END OF THIS SYLLABUS, YOU WILL BE GIVEN THE REQUIRED COURSE ACCESS CODE AND BE TOLD WHAT TO USE AS A USER NAME AND PASSWORD.
See below on how to obtain your textbook. If the bookstore is out of textbooks for the on-line course, the same book is used in the self-paced CAOS 90G-55 course. The bookstore is usually open on Saturday, of the first week of school for your convenience.

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS/SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS
This course uses a tool called PHIT--Train and Assess IT Office. All course assignments, quizzes, and course deadlines will be available to you on-line in your PHIT course. You won't have to come to campus for anything. When you enter your on-line course, you will see a list of assignment modules. You will do all the modules listed.
Each week enter your on-line course and complete the Assignment for that week! The course has been designed so that if you successfully complete the weekly assignments, you will succeed! We will communicate with one another periodically through e-mail during the week. I will communicate with you in the e-mail provided in the course--when you enter your course you will see a welcome message from me.I take Fridays and weekends off so we won't be communicating with one another during the weekends!
TESTING/GRADING POLICIES/FINAL GRADES
Grading/Completing This Course: To complete this course, you must complete ALL assignments plus ALL quizzes with at least a 70%. Weekly deadlines for each assignment are posted inside the course.
Periodically you will take a self-check quiz. You will receive feedback on the quiz immediately after your take it. You can retake the quiz up to 3 times.
If you successfully complete ALL assignments and quizzes, you will obtain a Credit grade for this course. This is a Pass/No Pass course. No letter grades will be issued.
Policy on Copying and Cheating: Students who submit the work of others as their own or cheat on exams or other assignments will receive a failing grade in the course and will be reported to college authorities.

HOW TO ACCESS (LOG ON) TO YOUR ON-LINE COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THE BELOW-LISTED INFORMATION FIRST BEFORE PERFORMING THE STEPS ON YOUR COMPUTER.
Once you have enrolled in the course and have taken the On-Line Orientation AND purchased the Train and Assess IT for Office Packet, you should be able to access the course, but you will need the following information.
1. Open your PHIT--Train and Assess IT for Office packet that you purchased at the bookstore. Follow the directions in the Train and Assess IT User's Guide starting on pages 1-14. This will install the software.
2. Now do pages 14-17 of the PHIT User's Guide to self register USING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION FOR YOUR USER ID/PASSWORD AND COURSE SECTION ID after clicking the New User Button..
- YOUR USER ID: Please use the FIRST LETTER of your FIRST NAME, followed by your LAST NAME. (Example: Linda West would be LWEST Do not use spaces or symbols.
- YOUR PASSWORD: Please use the last 4 digits of your social security number
- COURSE ID: The Course ID for this course is 23vkp2pp (for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters ONLY. For Summer: it is m323vp7v..
- ACCESS CODE: The 16 digit access code/Id code is in the front of the User's Guide. YOU WILL NEED TO PEEL BACK THE LABEL TO SEE IT.
VERY IMPORTANT: Before clicking NEXT, be sure to click the LICENSE AGREEMENT BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.
Problems Logging On/Accessing the Course: If you have trouble logging on/accessing the course, following the steps under TROUBLESHOOTING AT THE END OF THIS SYLLABUS. Also, be sure that you have installed Disk 1 on your computer before attempting to log on. NOTE: Dial up may be much too slow. You will probably need at least DSL for this course.
3. You should now be at the Main Training Window once you have registered. Follow the steps below to learn how to navigate around the course.
HOW TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE COURSE
4. Read (but do not do)the rest of the User’s Guide. VERY IMPORTANT: The following is OPTIONAL--You don't have to do since this information is always changing.
- OPTIONAL: Click on User Guide in the Menu on the left of your computer screen.
- OPTIONAL: Under the STUDENT GUIDE section click on HTML VERSION. Then go through the lesson to learn how to navigate through the course. To Advance to the next screen, click on the NEXT button at the Top Left-Hand Corner of the Screen.
- OPTIONAL: Under the Student Guide section click HTML Version to learn how to get your message from your instructor, use the course menu, etc. (Note: If necessary you may need to click on the Training Guide in the Menu to get to User Guide).
IMPORTANT:
- Student Email: Once you have completed the Student Guide section, click on My Messages in the Menu on the left side of the screen to get your first message from your instructor. You will need to click on the underlined word (link) to read the message.
- Be sure to read the information below about how to complete the lessons in the course and how to send your instructor an e-mail.
- If you wish to log out of the course, click on Sign Out or you can begin the Assignments for this course by continuing on to Step 5 below.
HOW TO COMPLETE THE LESSONS IN THIS COURSE
5. (Skip this step if you are already logged into the course and go on to Step 6.) Enter your course by clicking on your PHIT icon on your desktop if you are not already in the course. It will take you to the log in screen. Type in your USER ID AND PASSWORD (User ID is the First Letter of your first name following by your last name (example: LWest for Linda West) Your Password should be the last 4 digits of your student ID. Press CONTINUE button.
6. Once you have entered PHIT, you should see the following screen. Click on your course name as shownn (The course name may be slightly different.):
If there is a yellow envelope next to COMPUTER LITERACY, CLICK ON IT TO READ THE IMPORTANT EMAIL FROM YOUR INSTRUCTOR.
7. The following screen should appear. These are all of the MODULES you will need to complete in this course.
Click on Introduction to Computers as shown below to begin your first lesson. When you click on this link, you will see a list of lessons. Do ALL the lessons shown to complete the Introduction to Computers module. THIS WILL BE YOUR FIRST WEEK'S ASSIGNMENT IN THE COURSE.
Introduction to the Computer (Do all lessons within this Module--Quiz--About This Course, Using the Windows Interface, Buying a PC, PC Troubleshooting Basics, Installing and Uninstalling Software, Security and Privacy. IMPORTANT: A few of these lessons may be somewhat slow and you may get some dialog box messages. Answer yes to all of the dialog messages if you get them. If you get a message when you click on Inside the Box that says "Inside the Box" is not installed. "Would you like to Run it from the Web". Answer Yes. Also,if you get a message that says "The Required Authorware Web Player is not installed, please proceed to dowload the Player", read the message on the screen--WAIT until Authorware gets installed then click the CLOSE button, and then click on the HERE link at the bottom of the page to install AUTHORWARE PLAYER. You will need this player to read your lessons.
8. You must complete ALL of the following Computer Literacy Modules/LESSONS plus ALL quizzes. Note: Additional Quizzes or Modules/Lessons may be included in the course but omitted in the below list. The below list is only a guideline to help you understand what to do

REQUIRED E-MAIL ASSIGNMENT BY THURSDAY OF WEEK 1
Important Reminder To On-Line Orientation Students: After printing this Syllabus, use the BACK button on your browser to return to the On-Line Orientation to complete Part 3 of the Orientation and to complete the REQUIRED STUDENT INFORMATION FORM.
