Summer 2009 Online Class

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In a general sense, accounting can be defined as an information system that provides reports to stakeholders about the economic activities and condition of a business. The subject material of this course is financial accounting which is primarily concerned with the recording and reporting of economic data and activities for a business. Although such reports provide useful information for managers, they are the primary reports for owners, creditors, governmental agencies, and the public.

The primary objective of this course is to help students learn how accounting meets the information needs of various users by developing and communicating information that is used in decision-making. Accordingly, the expected student outcome is the demonstration that the student can prepare, read, and analyze external financial statements.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Because this is an online distance learning class all work will be completed online except for a comprehensive final exam that is taken on campus.  The requirements are:

(1) Completion of exercises, problems, and chapter quizzes using the WileyPLUS course management system.
(2) Completion of a comprehensive problem that will be downloaded from this site in PDF format. You will bring the completed problem to the final exam.
(3) Take a comprehensive on-campus final exam covering 9 chapters.
(4) Participation in class discussions using a DeAnza supported CATALYST system.

ONLINE COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
DeAnza accounting department is using a course management system called WileyPLUS. This system is rich in audio and visual presentations and online graded assignments and assessment quizzes. Unfortunately, WileyPLUS does not include student-to-student communication tools.

For communications we will use a De Anza supported system called Catalyst that will allow students to participate in forums where questions/comments may be posted. Because students are registered in Catalyst based on their De Anza registration, students may not use Catalyst until the first day of the quarter when all students are loaded into the system.

For the Catalyst and WileyPLUS login links and to start working with WileyPLUS, use the appropriate links on the left side of my DeAnza faculty page as soon as they are available for the Spring 2009 quarter.

TEXTBOOK AND WEB SITE MATERIALS
The WileyPLUS site is based on the textbook Accounting Principles, 8th Edition, by Weygandt, Kieso, Kimmel, published by Wiley. There are three options for buying the text and WileyPLUS access code.

Option 1. Buy one-third of the book (Chapters 1-9) from the DeAnza Bookstore in loose-leaf format. This option includes a registration code for the required online access to WileyPLUS. This registration code is good for one year and can be used for Accounting 1B and 1C. The bookstore link is: http://books.deanza.edu/Home.aspx

Option 2. Buy only the registration code for WileyPLUS. When you login to our Accounting 1A site you will have the option to buy the registration code for WileyPLUS which includes the text in electronic format (e-text) and access to all of the WileyPLUS online material. Shortly after you buy the registration code, the publisher will send you an email with information about purchasing the hard copy of the text at a reduced price. This upgrade option is for students who want to try the e-text and then find that they prefer the traditional hard copy of the text.

Option 3. Buy the entire textbook from another source. In this case, you will still need to buy the registration code for online access to WileyPLUS. This is probably the most expensive option.

CLASS SCHEDULE AND GRADE CALCULATION
Plan to spend 12 hours per week or more reading the text and completing the online assignments. Use the class schedule below as a guide.

Accounting 1A Schedule  - Summer 2009
Week 1___June 29..... Chapter 1 assignments
Week 2___July 6......... Chapter 2 and 3 assignments
Week 3___July 13....... Chapter 4 assignments
             ___July 18....... Homework activity check
Download and start Comprehensive Problem 1
Week 4___July 20........ Chapter 5 and 6 assignments
Week 5___July 27...... Chapter 7 and 8 assignments
Week 6___August 3... Chapter 9 assignments

I will be checking your WileyPLUS activity on Saturday July 18 at 6 pm as shown on the class schedule above. Students that are not current with the assignments may be dropped. Remember, it is your responsibility to drop if you do not intend to complete the class. If you have not dropped, you will receive the appropriate letter grade for the work completed.

Final Comprehensive Exam
Date:  Thursday August 6, 2009
Room:  ADMIN 101
Time:  6 to 8 pm

The on-campus final exam is comprehensive and is approximately 50% objective and 50% short problems. The final is closed book and individual work. You may prepare and bring one note page (front and back, hand written or typed) to use during the exam. I will provide answer sheets, you do not need a Scantron. Photo identification for the final will be required.

Grade Calculation
WileyPLUS Online Assignments....... 50%
Comprehensive Problem 1................ 10%
Comprehensive Final Exam............... 40%

Example: If the total WileyPLUS online assignments equal 440 points and you earn 375 points your percentage is 85% (375/440). If your final exam is 75% and the Comprehensive Problem 1 is complete, then your overall percent for the class is 82.5% calculated as follows:
(Wiley 85% x 50%) + (Final 75%x 40%) + (Comp. Problem 10%) = 82.5%

A Grade =  90%-100%, B Grade = 80%-89%, C Grade = 70%-79%
D Grade = 60%-69%, F Grade = Below 60%
