Fall 2012 Online Class

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In a general sense, accounting can be defined as an information system that provides reports to stakeholders about the economic activities and condition of a business. The subject material of this course is financial accounting which is primarily concerned with the recording and reporting of economic data and activities for a business. Although such reports provide useful information for managers, they are the primary reports for owners, creditors, governmental agencies, and the public.

The primary objective of this course is to help students learn how accounting meets the information needs of various users by developing and communicating information that is used in decision-making. Accordingly, the expected student outcome is the demonstration that the student can prepare, read, and analyze external financial statements.

ONLINE COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
DeAnza accounting department is using a course management system for Accounting 1A called CengageNOW. This system is rich in audio and visual presentations and online graded assignments and assessment quizzes. Unfortunately, CengageNOW does not include adequate student-to-student communication tools.

For communications we will use a De Anza supported system called Catalyst that will allow students to participate in forums where questions/comments may be posted. Because students are registered in Catalyst based on their De Anza registration, students may not use Catalyst until the first day of the quarter when all students are loaded into the system.

For the Catalyst and CengageNOW login links and to start working with CengageNOW, use the appropriate links on the left side of my DeAnza faculty page as soon as they are available for the Fall 2012 quarter.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Because this is an online distance learning class all work will be completed online except for a comprehensive problem and the comprehensive final exam that is taken on campus. The requirements are:

(1) Completion of exercises, problems, and chapter quizzes using the CengageNOW course management system. (2) Completion of a comprehensive problem. (3) Take a comprehensive on-campus final exam covering 9 chapters. (4) Participation in class discussions using a DeAnza supported CATALYST system.

TEXTBOOK AND WEB SITE MATERIALS
The CengageNOW site is based on the textbook Accounting, 24th Edition, by Warren, Reeve., Duchac, published by South-Western. To purchase the CengageNOW access code and register your account, use the "CengageNOW link shown on the left side on my Faculty page.

Final Comprehensive Exam
Date: Thursday December 6, 2012
Room: MLC-113
Time: 6:30 to 8:30 pm

The on-campus final exam is comprehensive and is approximately 50% objective and 50% short problems. The final is closed book and individual work. You may prepare and bring one note page (front and back, hand written or typed) to use during the exam. I will provide answer sheets, you do not need a Scantron. Photo identification for the final will be required.

Grade Calculation
CengageNOW Online Assignments....... 50%
Comprehensive Problem 1................ 10%
Comprehensive Final Exam............... 40%

Example: If the total CengageNOW online assignments equal 440 points and you earn 375 points your percentage is 85% (375/440). If your final exam is 75% and the Comprehensive Problem is complete, then your overall percent for the class is 82.5% calculated as follows:
(Cengage 85% x 50%) + (Final 75%x 40%) + (Comp. Problem 10%) = 82.5%

A Grade = 90%-100%, B Grade = 80%-89%, C Grade = 70%-79%
D Grade = 60%-69%, F Grade = Below 60%
