DESCRIPTION
The concepts of redwood biology ecosystems and its role in modern society. Studies include historical ethnic groups, economic uses of redwoods, geographic distribution of redwoods and their close relatives, botanical traits, ecological relationships of plants, animals and the abiotic impacts on redwoods. Attendance at a bi-weekly meeting on-campus lab is required.
Enrollment is limited.
PREREQUISITES
EWRT 100B and READ 91 (or LART 100), or ESL 4 are advised.

Leland Van Fossen has been an instructor of Anatomy & Physiology, Introductory Biology, Desert Ecology, Sierra Nevada Ecology,
Marine Biology, Coastal Redwoods, Hawaiian Ecology on Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Kauai,and California Ecology at De Anza College since 1968.
He has a BA and MA in Biology from San Jose State University and has
taken additional graduate work at Stanford University, Santa Clara
University, U.C. Santa Cruz, and Northeastern Illinois University.

Field Trips:
1-2 trips are required for each student during this class. See the Schedule for this class and arrange to go with the instructor on dates given or follow a plan designed with your instructor.
Project.
Each student is to complete a photo essay of 36 photographic prints. The prints are to be glued to the top of plain white paper and then a description of the common name, habitat, adaptations, and other pertenant information about the species is to be added as paragraph under the photo. You may use the Web to find and use information.
Homework Assignments.
There will be five major areas with 10-20 questions to be answered for each area.
All answers are to be typed and printed. See the due-dates for each of these assignments.
