OBJECTIVES: Instruction in jazz improvisation through melodies, scales, chords, ear-training, and forms. Students will develop performance skills through rehearsing and performing in a jazz combo.
NOTE: New students will be subject to an audition
GRADES: Based on participation (50%), mid-term and final performance (15% each), and two one-page jazz concert reports (10% each). Mid-term will be held during the sixth week; Final Performance will be held during the twelth week
TEXT: "The Real Easy Book, Vol. 1," available in college bookstore. Lead sheets and other songs/materials may also be handed-out in class.
SUGGESTED TEXT for more advanced groups: "The Real Book, Sixth Edition" published by Hal Leonard, available at World of Music or other local music stores.
EQUIPMENT: Some amplifiers and drum-sets are available on site. Some students may be asked to bring their own equipment
