DESCRIPTION: The Daddios Jazz Ensembles are performing ensembles that utilize a standard full-sized "big band" instrumentation, with saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm sections. Their repertoire spans the history of big band music from the 1930s to the present day.

PREREQUISITES: The Daddios are open to all qualified instrumentalists who play a standard "big band" instrument, i.e. alto, tenor or baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, jazz guitar, bass, drum set, vibes or latin percussion. Ensemble members must be proficient at sightreading notated music; rhythm section players must also know how to read a rhythm section chord chart.

AUDITIONS: Participation in the "Six O'Clock" Daddios is open to all interested qualified instrumentalists. Extra players may be carried in each section, and horn parts are often doubled. If the number of interested players for any particular instrument cannot be reasonably accomodated, audition instructions will be given at the first class meeting and auditions will take place during the second class meeting. Membership in the "Eight O'Clock" Daddios is by invitation only.

ATTENDANCE: Interested players must attend the first Wednesday night class meeting of the quarter in order to be considered for membership in the "Six O'Clock" Daddios. (Click on the "Academic Calendar" link below for information on start dates for each quarter.) Students are expected to attend all class meetings and all concerts listed on the class green sheet distributed at the first class meeting. If a student must miss a class meeting for any reason, it must be cleared with the instructor in advance.

REHEARSALS AND CONCERTS: Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:00 P.M. The Daddios perform for the public at least once per quarter; a concert is usually held during the last Wednesday class meeting of the quarter. In addition, the groups often perform at Jazz Festivals and at various public venues in the South Bay community. The Daddios regularly feature prominent local jazz artists at their concerts and appear with a nationally known guest artist each Spring at the college's Patnoe Jazz Festival.
