Latin Jazz Ensemble Course Information

MUSI-025G or 25K -- LATIN JAZZ ENSEMBLE

This new performing group will rehearse and perform music in the various styles of jazz influenced by Latin American rhythms. All brass, saxophone, rhythm section players and Latin percussionists who can read music (or a rhythm section lead sheet) and improvise are welcome.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Latin Jazz Ensemble will explore a variety of Latin Jazz literature through rehearsals and in performance. The primary styles to be studied and performed are of the popular Cuban genre; e.g., son, son-montuno, guaracha, mambo, cha-cha-chá, bolero, etc. Students are expected to become familiar with the styles introduced in class, as well as their associated formal structures.

PREREQUISITES: Participation is open to qualified instrumentalists. Instrumentation will include saxophones, brass, percussion, piano and bass. Auditions, if needed, will take place during the second class meeting. Appropriate skill and ability on your instrument will be determined by the instructor.

GRADING POLICY: Final grades will be based on attendance, tardiness, effort towards preparation of music outside of class, and conduct in rehearsals. Students are required to attend all scheduled performances and are expected to attend all rehearsals unless cleared with the instructor.

Instructor: Steve Tyler
Class meets: Wednesdays, 3:30-5:20 p.m., Room A-31
