Manila Tips

This page will contain useful information about using Manila. One of the first areas I am exploring is the discussion group feature in Manila. The discussion group has the potential to be a great first step in developing hybrid instruction.

I highly recommend visiting the De Anza Manila Support site and viewing the How To Guide. It is a good place to start.

Multi-Page Discussion Theme
If you are in any way planning to include a discussion group on your site now or in the future, use this theme for your site right from the start. The theme comes with the left hand menu all set up with the discussion and membership links ready to go. Then go to the discussion tips link to view the recommended set up preferences. If you set the preferences up now, you can avoid some of the quirky things that can be encountered when you are eventually ready to begin discussion topics with your students.

Stories(pages), Gems(files) and Shortcuts(links)
Because Manila enables you to create shortcuts(links)by simply placing the title of the story or gem inside " marks, you should give careful thought to the titles you give to your stories or gems. The title has to be exactly as you want the shortcut to read. For example if you create a story about your dog named Barney but you want the link to read "My Buddy", you will have to title your story "My Buddy" and not Barney. If you will be creating many stories about a similar topic, you must create unique titles to be able to use the " marks for shortcuts.

Edit your stories in IE
The IE browser has a tool bar providing some basic html tools for formatting the appearance of text.
