[DeAnza TSLR] Technology Supported Learning and Retention (TSLR) online workshop (CAOS 195Y/CAOS 198Y)

Technology Supported Learning & Retention (TSLR) is an online workshop of two 2-unit courses about using technology to enhance teaching and learning. Through a series of online discussions and guided activities, gain perspective and confidence to add technology-enable components to classroom, hybrid and online courses that will support student learning and contribute to improved student engagement, participation, success and retention.

The Technology Supported Learning and Retention (TSLR) workshop is now available for college credit as courses CAOS 195Y - Overview and Basics, and CAOS 198Y - Course Management, that provide context for the development activities in relation to the overview of the technologies and the principles of good practice based on Chickering & Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education.

  • CAOS 198Y - 2 units
includes Overview - Introduction to Technology Supported Learning & Retention (TSLR)
Guided tour of technology, tools, functions, discussions, participate as a student in discussions, assignments, quizzes
    and Basics - Learning Support
Develop samples within your own teaching, emphasis on application of technology to support learning objectives, many of the technologies and learning materials are available online and can be used to support student learning

  • CAOS 195Y - 2 units
Course Management - Teaching and Learning
Develop your own workspace to address broader needs of students in a hybrid and fully online learning environment, emphasis on course management and pedagogy, special topics - importing quizzes, content, previous experience with learning support technologies

These courses are offered as facilitated Distance Learning courses. There are no required on campus meetings. One-on-one and group meetings will be available throughout the quarter. We provide the "guide on the side" and maximum flexibility to meet your needs within your time constraints.

You can register anytime throughout the semester. Each course is 2 units. Readings, discussion participation and assignments can be completed in 2-4 hours per week for each course. Participants can complete the courses at their own pace with facilitator assistance. For credit, all work must be completed and reviewed with the facilitator.

There are seven topics that "map" to the The Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. The focus of weekly discussions will be directed to the Principle of the Week.

Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education

In 1987 Chickering & Gamson published the now famous Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. These principles are based on the perspective that the goal of a proper undergraduate education should be active, cooperative, and challenging.

  1. encourage student-faculty contact
  2. encourage cooperation among students
  3. encourage active/engaged learning
  4. give prompt feedback
  5. emphasize time on task
  6. communicate high expectations
  7. respect diverse talents and ways of learning

Workshop format

Although the workshop can be completed at your own pace, participants are encouraged to log in once or twice per week and join the discussions. Individual questions are greatly appreciated as these provide the best opportunity for facilitator-participant and participant-participant interaction.

The course materials are presented as a single workshop - CAOS 195Y/CAOS 198Y to provide context for the development activities in relation to the overview of the technologies and the principles of good practice.

CAOS 198Y Topics in Computer Applications and Office Systems

  • Overview - Introduction to Technology Supported Learning & Retention (TSLR)
Guided tour of technology, tools, functions, discussions, participate as a student in discussions, assignments, quizzes
.. Access & Motivation - exploring the technology and access to it. Winning the learner’s trust, motivating participants

  • Basics - Learning Support
Develop samples within own teaching, emphasis on application of technology to support learning objectives, many of the technologies and learning materials are available online and can be used to support student learning
.. Socialisation - social processes and ‘community building’
.. Information Exchange - exchanging information and performing tasks, interaction with the course content and with other participants and the facilitator

    CAOS 195Y Individual Microcomputer Projects

.. Knowledge Construction - knowledge development, discussion activities and group dynamics
.. Development - reflection and group learning

We will focus on one of the principles each week for the first seven weeks. Then participants will have time to review and develop the activities through the end of the quarter.

Each course is 2 units. Readings, discussion participation and assignments can be completed in 2-4 hours per week for each course. Participants can complete the courses at their own pace with facilitator assistance. For credit, all work must be completed and reviewed with the facilitator. However, your mileage may vary.

Registration and credit

Participants who successfully complete the workshop program will be awarded a Pass grade for the units for the CAOS course or courses completed.

If you are interested in participating in the overview, register for CAOS 198Y Topics in Computer Applications and Office Systems

If you would like to participate in a cohort of DeAnza faculty developing Catalyst based resources for current or future courses, register for CAOS 195Y Individual Microcomputer Projects as well as CAOS 198Y Topics in Computer Applications and Office Systems

Getting started

The workshop will run through the end of Spring quarter.
