CIS2: 11. Final Project

CIS 2 Computers and Society

meeting image The Final Project is an opportunity to demonstrate the application of everything that you have learned in this class.

Everyone proposes a final project. With a small group, you are required to work with your team members to refine the proposal, then research and write one project per group.

Working collaboratively at a distance is hard. This project is intended to give you an opportunity to use skills and technology to work through the process to produce a web-delivered product that demonstrates application of technology and computers to a social task.

The project is about computer based communication and collaboration, so working in person deceases the difficulty. Working collaboratively online requires more effort toward the learning objectives, and therefore increases your total score for the project.

Objectives: 11. Final Project

In this module, students
  • work collaboratively online using technology and computers as the primary form of communication
  • experience the logistical requirements for producing a web-delivered project with internal and external deadlines
  • demonstrate understanding of the social issues of computer-related topics
  • explore and discuss multiple opinions expressed on the web
  • produce a compelling web-based product using technology tools available

Global Social Issues and Technology

What one (1) global social issue will be extremely important in the next 3-5 years? What role will computer technology play in these issues? Will the impact of technology be positive or negative? Who will benefit and how? Who will be hurt? Who is driving the use of this technology? Compare and contrast this global social issue with others that your group considered but decided not to focus on. Find and cite web sources that demonstrate and support your arugment.

The Final Project deliverable addresses important issues that were raised during class from the text, the study guide or in class discussions. The more controversial, the better. If there are different opinions about the issues, arguments supported by "facts" that are conflicting, you can present both sides in your report.

Be sure to include your own original ideas and suggestions for improving and benefiting society. Why is this issue intertesting? What import information do we need to know about the topic? Your project should conclude with a summary and a statement about the implications for society in the future.

You must include references from the web that discuss the issue you are reporting. See Final Project Guidelines for more information.

Assignment: 11. Final Project

  1. When your group has completed your Final Project, add the wiki reference and a summary of your project into the Final Project discussion forum. One person in the group should post a message to the Final Project discussion forum. This way all other students in the class can access it for the Peer Review assignment.

  2. Respond to the Final Project Summary quiz to provide information about the collaboration and your participation in your project. There are several questions to answer, including the name of the discussion topic where your group's project is located.

  3. Provide 1-2 paragraphs summarizing your contribution to your group's project. Check back here for your Group Project Grade based on your Instructor's review of your group's final project as posted in the Final Project discussion forum. Your grade and instructor comments will be recorded here.
