On-Campus to Distance LearningSo you want to take your existing on-campus course and transform it into a Distance Learning course. There are several steps to the process. Be prepared to spend time working with the departments involved in reviewing and approving your proposal and curriculum. While not difficult, these steps can be time consuming.
Plan to spend time over the next three quarters getting ready to teach your Distance Learning course. Yes, it could take that long.
Distance Learning can mean several different things - televised live content, televised pre-recorded content (De Anza produced or purchased/leased from a third party), recorded video tape, web-delivered (with or without live/synchronous portions), listserv, email, computer-based (but not web-delivered), CD-ROM, or any number of variations.
Getting Started
Things to think about before you begin planning for your Distance Learning course.
- Will this course work as a Distance Learning course? Not all courses lend themselves to Distance Learning?

What type of delivery is best for this course?
- Am I ready for teaching online? Not being able to talk to students face-to-face can be frustrating.
- Are there enough students to justify offering this course as a distance learning course? Some students may not have the time management skills and motivation required to be successful in distance learning courses.
Proposal Development
- Talk to your Dean and/or Department Chair about developing and teaching a course in Distance Learning format - regarding scheduling Distance Learniing classes and/or course sections
- Talk to the Distance Learning staff - who can help you with the procedures and questions about teaching distance classes and student learning issues and services
- Create a proposal for your Distance Learning course
- If necessary, present your proposal to the Curriculum Committee for review and approval
Your course proposal needs to include the following:
- Copy of the current Course Outline
For the Curriculum Proposal Cover Sheet
- Course information - from department course outline - hours per week, grading
- Dates in quarter/year format, Submitted - current quarter, Effective - 2-3 quarters in future, Last CC Review - date current course outline updated/approved, Last GE review - if applicable
- Mode of delivery - distance learning
- Rationale for proposal - Request for Distance Learning approval of current curriculum
- Action - Request Distance Learning Approval
- De Anza degree applicability - as appropriate
- Signatures - signifying knowledge and approval of the course outline
- Copy of Course Outline
For the Request for Approval of Distance Education Delivery
- Course information - from the course outline
- Delivery Method - check all that apply
- Course status - new delivery system for an existing course and does not deviate from the course standards of the same course taught traditionally
- Appropriate for Distance Education
- Distance Learning methods
- Instructor training
- Instructor-student contact requirement fulfillment
- Accessibility
- College resources required
- Student resources required
Approvals
Your proposal must be reviewed and approved by both Distance Learning and the Instructional department. Approvals are given as signatures on the Curriculum Proposal Cover Sheet and Request for Approval of Distance Education Delivery form. Each approver will be interested in a specific aspect of your course. Here are some likely concerns. Be prepare to elaborate and/or clarify your position on each of these, in case they come up in proposal review discussions.
For the Curriculum Proposal Cover Sheet
- Initiator - that's you
- Division Curriculum Advisor/Rep
- Departmental Approval
- Division Dean Approval
- Interdivisional/Intra-Program Division Dean
- Distance Education Approval
- Curriculum Committee Action (non-G.E. course satus)
- G.E. Review Committee Chair
- Curriculum Committee Action on G.E. courses
- Requisite sign-off
For the Request for Approval of Distance Education Delivery
- Review proposal with Distance Learning Dean and/or Program Coordinator
- Address each question in the Request for Approval to the satifaction of Distance Learning
Paperwork Routing
- Complete the forms
- Attach a copy of the Course Outline
- Sign both forms as the Initiator
- Forward to your Department and/or Division - hand deliver for signature if possible, schedule meeting with approvor to review proposal, answer questions and get signature.
Course Development
Now that you have received approval for your Distance Learning course, you are ready to begin the development of materials and delivery planning. Please feel free to contact the Distance Learning Center staff if you have questions. We are available to help with orientation and support for faculty developing and delivering distance learning course.
