Faculty Web Site Support

De Anza College provides an easy way for faculty members to create and manage web sites using the Manila content management system. This web site provides documentation, sign-ups for training, a user support forum, and other resources.

Membership in the Faculty Support web site is limited to employees of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Members are required to use a verifiable district email address and both first and last names. Contact facultysupport@fhda.edu if you have questions about becoming a site member.

Do you have a question about using your Manila web site? Join this site by clicking the Join Now link in the sidebar and post questions in the Discussion forum and get answers online. (Contact ETS for other types of tech support.) We only support Manila at this site, and we can only help De Anza College Manila web site users.

Several Manila training courses are offered by the Staff Development Office during the winter 2007 term, including Introduction to Manila, Using Discussion Features in Manila, and Using Manila as a Blog.

Updated Manila User's Guide PDF. An updated version of the Manila User's Guide PDF has been posted to include the most recent changes in Manila. (Note: Userland produces the Manila software.)

If there is sufficient interest, we may consider forming a Manila Users Group. Use the Discussion forum at this site to let us know if you are interested.

Use your deanza.edu e-mail address

Use your deanza.edu email address at your Manila site. Here's how to set it up:

Log into your web site.
Click on Prefs (top menu).
Click on plug ins (left navigation)
Check the deanzamail plug in
Click submit.
Click on the Deanzamail plug in. (top menu)
Click on the create new login button

Facts about the faculty server

During the 2002-03 academic year several hundred faculty members received Manila training and more than 200 sites were created.
During the fall 2006 term another 50 or so were trained.
There have been millions of hits on the faculty web site directory page.
The faculty server handles thousands of connections per hour around the clock.
We have seen as many as 75 simultaneous hits on the server during busy periods.
The web sites of several individual faculty members have received over a million hits. Many other faculty sites have had over 100,000 hits.

Updated site features

You can now delete members from your site. Go to your URL and add /stats/members at the end.(Example: http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/facultyjoe/stats/members.)

Default file upload space has been increased to 100 megabytes. (Additional upload space is available by special request.)

Tip of the Week

Long time Manila users are familiar with the use of "gems" - a method of uploading almost any file type. Manila has recently been updated and the term Gems has been replaced (wisely, we think!) by the term files. (Note that your Gems link in the Editors Only menu has been replaced by a Files link.)

Everything works essentially the same as before; only the terminology has been changed.

Featured Faculty Site

Scott Heffner was one of the Manila "early-adopters." He quickly figured out that his site would be a great place to put PowerPoint presentations for his students, leading the team to increase support for uploaded files. Since then he has added extensive teaching and learning resources to his site. (Previous Featured Faculty Sites)
