Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides and supports faculty web sites at De Anza College?

Faculty web sites are handled in a variety of ways at De Anza College including the following:

  • ETS supports faculty web sites using a tool called Manila. Manila lets faculty members create and maintain web-resources using their web browser. (The support materials at this site focus on this method.)
  • The De Anza College Marketing and Communications department handles server accounts for faculty who want to upload sites. Contact webteam@saturn.deanza.fhda.edu for more information.
  • Other programs (such as the Distance Learning Program) may support tools like WebCT for their faculty members.
  • Some faculty members use other resources that are not provided by the College or the District.

Are De Anza faculty members required to have a web site?

No.

Are all faculty members with web sites required to use Manila?

No. Faculty members can use any of the methods listed above.

Why does the College encourage the use of Manila sites?

Faculty members may choose to use Manila to quickly and easily create and maintain web-resources for their students.

Most non-technical faculty who want to put basic resources online will find that this is the quickest and easiest way to do so. It is easy to learn to use a Manila site; our two-hour training sessions will get you up and running.

I have already created web resources for my students using other tools. Can I move them to my Manila site?

Yes, you can. In many cases this is a great idea, especially if your current resources are not too extensive or complex and don't rely on proprietary formats.

You can also continue to use your existing resources and link to them from your Manila site.

Can I combine other resources with my Manila site?

Absolutely! Linking resources is a fundamental concept of the World Wide Web. For example, you might choose to create and maintain a basic "portal" page in Manila and link from there to your WebCT site, outside resources, etc.

Can I add pictures and graphics to my web site?

Yes, there is a very simple method for moving these resources from your computer to your web site.

Can I add other types of resources?

Yes. You can include a variety of types of files and easily link to them. For example you can include pdf, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other types of files.

You say it is simple and easy, but I need to use more advanced techniques.

Most faculty members will need to use little or no html coding to create web-based resources. However, the Manila system allows the use of more advanced methods, including direct html coding, style sheets, and even scripting.

Although we don't cover them in our basic trainings, Manila sites provide other advanced features including the following.

  • web-based discussion boards.
  • membership-controlled access.
  • shared editorial control.
  • simple surveys.
  • email bulletins.
  • customized templates.
  • daily journal format.

Are there things that our Manila system cannot do?

Yes. You may need to use a course-management systems like WebCT to provide certain features such as online grade books.

What is Manila?

Manila is a web content-management system that lets you easily create and maintain a web site using your web browser. De Anza College is providing this system to make it easy for faculty members to have web sites.

What can I put on my web site?

The same standards that apply to other materials you produce for your students should apply at your web site. For example, student privacy should be protected, materials should be related to your De Anza teaching assignment, you must observe copyright laws, etc.
