American PoliticsWinter 2012 Poli 1.04S, MTWTh 10:30am-11:20am, SC1102
This is the main page for Bob Stockwell's Poli 1 section. Below you'll find the syllabus, current announcements ("What's Going On Now"), reading/writing assignments, information on community service learning, lecture notes, exam reviews, and other useful links.
American politics syllabus winter 2012
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Knowledge,
skills/abilities, and attitudes you will be able to demonstrate/perform
as a result of successfully completing this class: (1) evaluate how political decisions are shaped by institutions and processes (2) assess the impact of political decisions on individuals and groups (3) demonstrate the capacity to participate in the political process effectively
What's Going On Now (week 5): Monday we pick up with federalism, chapter 3. By the end of the week, we should be turning to civil liberties, chapter 4. All the while you should be working on the writing assignment which is due Monday, week 6.
Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., excerpts from two of his famous speeches, one given a
year-to-the-day before his assassination, the second the day before he
was murdered -- http://www.democracynow.org/2012/1/16/special_dr_martin_luther_king_jr
Reading assignment: chapters 3 (M, T, W), and 4 (Th). You also have a great deal of reading to do for the writing assignment.
Writing assignment: The first major writing assignment (due Monday, 2/13) asks you to read/view a number of sources on income inequality in the United States, and to respond to a series of questions. The assignment is here: poli 1 winter 2012 writing assignment 1
Due week 3, Thursday: The writing assignment for this week (due Thursday, 1/26) is the community service learning agreement (link below). You can download and print the form, or send it in electronic form to my email: stockwellrobert@fhda.edu. Put "Poli 1 CSL agreement, your name" in the subject line.
The previous writing assignment (due Tuesday, 1/17 in class): the introductory note card. I passed out note cards in class and would like you to provide your name, a picture (ideally a recent image that provides a good likeness of yourself; i.e, not one in costume or as an infant), and any additional information you'd like to add. I gave you a model in class: background, current status, and future plans ("Where are you from? Where are you now? Where are you going?"). Think of this an an opportunity to introduce yourself to me. I am asking you to submit it so that I can get to know you better, and to assist me in remembering your name.
Community Service Learning Community Service Learning (CSL) is a form of experiential
education in which you apply knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and
good judgment to address genuine community needs. The CSL component of this class
is designed to enhance your understanding of American government and politics
through active participation in the political process and critical reflection
on that experience. CSL provides a range of benefits, including academic, personal, and professional growth. As part of the CSL assignment, students are required to: (1) engage in a minimum of 12 hours of community service
work while maintaining a record of attendance (2) maintain a journal of reflections on the service
learning experience (3) submit an essay of critical reflections upon completion of the service. CSL project guidelines CSL project agreement CSL project timesheet
