Community Service Learning Community Service Learning (CSL) is a form of experiential
education in which you apply knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and
good judgment to address genuine community needs. The CSL component of this class
is designed to enhance your understanding of American government and politics
through active participation in the political process and critical reflection
on that experience. CSL provides a range of benefits, including academic, personal, and professional growth. As part of the CSL assignment, students are required to: (1) engage in a minimum of 12 hours of community service
work while maintaining a record of attendance (2) maintain a journal of reflections on the service
learning experience (3) submit an essay of critical reflections upon completion of the service. CSL project guidelines CSL project agreement CSL project timesheet

CSL Winter 2010 In winter, many students were
involved in organizing efforts on campus in opposition to recent budget
cuts to education, including the January 20 Walk-in, participation in
the march in San Francisco (March 4), the local action on campus, and
the march in Sacramento (March 22). The organization that organized these efforts is called De Anza Restoring Education (DARE) (http://www.deanza.edu/communityengagement/news-events/2009-2010/dayofaction.html).

agreement (due Thursday, 1/26): You can download and print the form
below, or send it in electronic form to my email:
stockwellrobert@fhda.edu. Put "Poli 1 CSL agreement, your name" in the
subject line.
Introductory Note Card (due Tuesday, 1/17 in class): I passed out note cards in class and would like you to provide your
name, a picture (ideally a recent image that provides a good likeness
of yourself; i.e, not one in costume or as an infant), and any
additional information you'd like to add. I gave you a model in class:
background, current status, and future plans ("Where are you from? Where
are you now? Where are you going?"). Think of this an an opportunity to
introduce yourself to me. I am asking you to submit it so that I can
get to know you better, and to assist me in remembering your name.
