International Relations syllabus winter 2012
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Knowledge,
skills/abilities, and attitudes you will be able to demonstrate/perform
as a result of successfully completing this class: (1) evaluate how political decisions are shaped by institutions and processes in the international system (2) assess the impact of political decisions on states, groups, and individuals in the international system (3) demonstrate the capacity to effectively participate in international politics
What's Going On Now (weeks 11 and 12): Classes will be devoted primarily to group presentations. I will try to intersperse my comments on the readings throughout.
Week 11, Tuesday (3/20) The Greek Debt Crisis: A Proposed Solution US Economic Decline and Its Impact on the World
Week 11, Thursday (3/22) Government Censorship: How to Achieve Internet Freedom Global Warming: How To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions (two groups)
Week 12, Friday (3/30) 11:30am-1:30pm Final exam covering chapters 7-10. Bring a scantron and pencil/pen.
Reading assignment: chapters 7-10 in preparation for the final exam.
Writing assignment: The final draft of the research paper is due at the final exam (or by email before the exam). Write in the subject heading: poli 3 winter 2012 "research group" paper.

Introductory note card (due Tuesday, 1/17 in class): I passed out note cards in class and would like you to provide your
name, a picture (ideally a recent image that provides a good likeness
of yourself; i.e, not one in costume or as an infant), and any
additional information you'd like to add. I gave you a model in class:
background, current status, and future plans ("Where are you from? Where
are you now? Where are you going?"). Think of this an an opportunity to
introduce yourself to me. I am asking you to submit it so that I can
get to know you better, and to assist me in remembering your name.

(speakers, panel discussions, etc.) pertaining to international
politics offered by organizations such as the
World Affairs Council and the Commonwealth Club, as well as
institutions such as Stanford University and UC Berkeley. Students who
attend such an event, provide documentation of attendance (receipt and
program), and submit a 1-2 page analysis of the event will receive
