Posted 04/10/09 Hi everyone. Great first week. Please scroll down to the bottom of this web page for course/calendar updates.

Hi students, Welcome to spring quarter!! The first week we will get you started with student introductions and a description of the portfolio and presentation assignments. I want you to read through  the portfolio and presentation assignments and begin thinking about which option you might choose. On Wednesday we will explain these assignments in more detail and give examples of what students have done in the past so you can make an informed choice.   Students generally are quite creative and have a lot of fun with these assignments. I've had presentations on everything from what makes Google a great company to work for to how to handle gender discrimination in the workplace. Whatever your topic--it must relate directly to organizational communication.  On the other hand, if you choose to prepare a portfolio, you may take a general approach and include a variety of documents that represent who you are and what you have accomplished--or you may create a portfolio focused on a specific educational or career path such as art, nursing, or computer science. This will all make more sense when we discuss specific examples on Wednesday.  And of course, you will have ample opportunity to ask questions about the assignments. Print out the presentation and portfolio assignments and bring these to class with you.   Be sure to purchase your texts so you can begin reading the text and casebook for our Monday discussion. See specifics in the Week 1-2 Assignments document below. Let me know by e-mail if you have a problem opening a document.  Have a great first week!

How to effectively use PowerPoint for  business presentations

Why workplace culture is important

Cultural dissonance

Do companies have to be evil?

April 10, 2009

Monday I will lead a case discussion of Inside Microsoft.  It is important that you read both the case study and the text assignments. Just read the first Inside Microsoft. Answer questions in the week 2 assignment document. I checked the bookstore and both texts are still available. You can find them in the Business section (BUS 80) and/or in the Speech section (SPCH 70). Although most of you will have purchased the text at the bookstore, the Peterson text is on reserve in the learning center/library.  Today I placed the last edition (not the newest that we are using that can be purchased in the bookstore)  Andrews text on reserve. It may take a couple days before you can check out.

April 15

Meet in Campus Center Conference Room A for our Career Day Event
(Please arrive at 6:20 even though the event is slated to begin at 6:30)

April 20    Casebook    Introduction  p. 1-14 Case Assignment Prep (Please come prepared)

Review the section headings in the casebook and identify 2 or 3 sections
you are interested in facilitating. Your team will decide who will
    facilitate which section in class.

Read case analysis assignment. I don't expect you to fully understand the
assignment until we discuss the assignment in class Monday.

April 22   Text Ch. 13  Preparing for and Supporting Your Speech 453-479

Questions Due Wednesday:
1. How important are examples in developing your ideas for a presentation? Why? Which kind of examples do you feel are generally most effective? Why?

2. Develop a specific purpose and thesis statement for a presentation that you could present in this class. The topic should be relevant to organizational communication. What kinds of things might you cover in this speech?  Consider ways you might relate your topic to the concepts we are studying in class. How could/would you involve your audience? What references might you use? Be sure you have read through the presentation assignment before answering this question.

(Note: We will review ch. 14 in class. If you want to learn more about organizing and delivering speeches you may read through ch. 14.)

April 27    Text    Ch. 1 Ethics and Values
Question Due Monday:
1. Create your own question for the ethics chapter and answer the question.
2. How would you describe the core values of a company you admire or work for? (Do your research—look on-line for a description of core values for the company you chose. Attach the description.)  In what ways do you think the company does or does not live up to these core values?

April 29  Case Discussion Teams

Your facilitator for this week has assigned a case for you to read.  If you don't know which case--then contact one of your team members. Be sure to come fully prepared to discuss the case.

Some of you have asked for a description of the devil's advocate role. Here goes--

Devil’s Advocate
  • Remains on guard against “groupthink”  (when the pressure to reach group consensus is so great that the individual members surrender their own opinions to avoid conflict and view issues solely from the group’s perspective).
  • Ensures that all arguments have been heard, and looks for holes in the group’s decision-making process, in case there is something overlooked.
  • Keeps his or her mind open to problems, possibilities, and opposing ideas. Often presents opposing ideas in the form of a question.

May 4, 2009

Hi students, Time to take a breather. As we pick up the courseload for our projects (case facilitation/analysis, portfolios, presentations) we will cut back on the number of review questions for most weeks. I will update review questions later this week. Here is our agenda for this evening--

  • Discuss ch. 10 review questions/answers.
  • Break into teams to brainstorm portfolio and presentation ideas. (It will help if you have your answers to ch. 13 with you.)
  • Spend about 10 minutes in our case discussion teams/facilitator assign case.
  • Discuss speech major and certificate options. Meet one-on-one with speech majors.
