hi students, thank you for all your contributions to a successful career day event!!!!

here is a list of case facilitation teams and corresponding readings (also attached and posted on my webpage). on wednesday your teams will have most of the class period to brainstorm ideas and will begin to create a facilitation game plan. we will have at least parts of 2 class periods to plan our facilitaitons.

please carefully read through your assigned case and review relevant readings from our text (Andrews and Baird). come prepared to brainstorm ideas for your case facilitation. teams may bring in outside sources (e.g. youtube video on google or social media)

we will spend some time wednesday establishing team expectations. a significant part of your case facilitation grade is based on peer evaluation of your participation and contributions to your team efforts. successful organizations have high expectations. hopefully so do you.

there will be 4-5 members per team. we can negotiate the possibility of switching teams on wednesday for members who really wish to do so.

i think this will be a fun and exciting learning experience for you!!!

THE LEARNING ORGANIZATION

Review - Rohan Nagwekar

INTRODUCTION

In his book The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge defined a learning organization as “... a place
where people continually expand their capacity to create results they truly desire, where
new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free
and where people are continually learning how to learn”. Senge described the core of a
learning organization’s work as based upon five learning disciplines that represented
lifelong programs of both personal and organizational learning and practice.

These include:
Personal Mastery — individuals learn to expand their own personal capacity to create
results that they most desire. Employees also create an organizational environment that
encourages all fellow employees to develop themselves toward the goals and purposes that
they desire.

Mental Models — this involves each individual reflecting upon, continually clarifying, and
improving his or her internal pictures of the world, and seeing how they shape personal
actions and decisions.

Shared Vision — this involves individuals building a sense of commitment within particular
workgroups, developing shared images of common and desirable futures, and the principles
and guiding practices to support the journey to such futures.

Team Learning — this involves relevant thinking skills that enable groups of people to
develop intelligence and an ability that is greater than the sum of individual members'
talents.

Systems Thinking — this involves a way of thinking about, and a language for describing
and understanding forces and interrelationships that shape the behavior of systems. This
discipline helps managers and employees alike to see how to change systems more
effectively, and to act more in tune with the larger processes of the natural and economic
world.

David Garvin defines a leaning organization as "an organization skilled at creating,
acquiring, and transferring knowledge, and at modifying its behavior to reflect new
knowledge and insights."
The important component of this definition is the requirement that change occur in the way
work gets done. This test rules out a number of obvious candidates such as colleges. We in
colleges have been successful in creating knowledge (research) and transferring knowledge
(teaching) but have not been successful in applying that knowledge to our own activities.
The process of building a learning organization unleashes individual creativity, and fosters
collective learning, which is crucial for encouraging, and developing innovation and rapid
responsiveness to global competition (Millett 1998). In short, a learning organization is
continually getting ‘smarter’ because learning is planned, systematic and in alignment with
the organization's strategic goals.

In order to get smarter, the organization needs to capture its organizational knowledge.
Prahalad and Hamel (1990) have described the process of how organizations learn, and
identify the outcomes of the process as the development of core competencies, which are ‘...
the collective learning in the organization’. This occurs at all levels and functions within the
organization. On the surface, developing core competencies has an intuitive appeal, but it is
an extremely difficult process to maintain and manage, particularly as the organization
changes and adapts to its environment.

The McKinsey 7-S Framework provides a systems view for describing the major differences
between a traditional view of an organization and a learning organization. In the McKinsey
7-S Framework, seven key elements of an organization, namely, the structure, measurement
system, management style, staff characteristics, distinctive staff skills, strategy/action plan,
and shared values are identified. The first six elements are organized around the
organizations shared values. However, Hitt adds an eighth element — synergistic teams —
that he describes as the ‘missing link’. It is this element that Hitt regards as being at the
core of the learning organization. Synergistic teams provide the means for the members of
the organization to learn together, developing collective intelligence that is greater than the
sum of the intelligence of the individual members. Table below illustrates the characteristics
of the traditional view of an organization and the characteristics of a learning organization.

Finals Week

Monday I will be available during class to answer any
questions you have about where you stand with homework assignments.

Final Exam Day Thursday 11:30-1:30 Portfolio Presentations and Celebrate!!

Hi students,  Here's the game plan for the rest of the quarter!!

Week 11 and 12

Monday

(first hour) Race Matters (No reading assignment. We will draw on our prior reading from Brenda Allen)
Several of you expressed a desire to take DIFFERENCE MATTERS  to a deeper level and to
hear all voices in the classroom.  You specifically expressed interest to focus on Race Matters.
We will take the first five minutes to develop specific questions to work on.
What ideas do you have for discussion questions?  Bring your questions and we will
create a 1-hour facilitation on Race Matters based on what you prefer to discuss.
Do keep in mind our goal is to empower everyone who chooses to share their ideas and their stories.

(second hour) BRING PORTFOLIOS FOR PEER REVIEW. You will have an opportunity
to discuss/share your portfolios in your teams and get answers to questions you have about
the portfolio assignment.  Remember your portfolio may cover a broad range of academic/career/personal
achievements or may focus on a specific theme (such as art, music, computer programming, nursing).
Your portfolio could focus on your major (e.g. business, speech communication, nursing, computer science, engineering),
or on one or two classes (such as journalism or organizational communication).  Some out of the ordinary portfolios
have focused on culinary art, culinary communication, clothing design, tattoo art, and graffiti art.

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS IN THIS BIG WIDE WORLD!!

Wednesday

Portfolio Presentations. You have just 5 minutes. WHAT WILL YOU LEAVE US WITH?
YOUR PORTFOLIO'S AND PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS SHOULD REPRESENT YOU!
As you have done all quarter, let your imaginations run free. Consider what you can do to make
your portfolio presentation interactive, engaging, and/or entertaining.
DO NOT GO THROUGH YOUR PORTFOLIO PAGE BY PAGE.
In past quarters students have shown pictures and described volunteer work in a third world country,
clothing design, tattoo art, graffiti art/ others have sang, danced, showed video
performances (music, dance, plays), described dreams/ambitions for the future. If we were to present,
Mike might show rescue pictures from his portfolio and describe one of his rescue missions. Donna
might show pictures of the ranch and describe the work she and Mike are doing to make it sustainable.

PORTFOLIOS ARE DUE.
WE WILL COLLECT YOUR PORTFOLIOS WEDNESDAY AND RETURN THEM ON FINAL EXAM DAY.
INCLUDE YOUR FINAL DRAFT RESUME IN YOUR PORTFOLIO.

FINAL EXAM DAY WE WILL FINISH PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS,

CELEBRATE,
REFLECT ON THE COURSE, DO A CLOSING ACTIVITY, AND TURN PORTFOLIOS BACK TO YOU.

Have a great weekend.

Mike and Donna

Week 7 2011

PLEASE READ
Hi students,  This is not the sort of note we like to post, and we do realize this does not apply to all.
We want to remind you of some groundrules here so we are all on the same page.
We expect you to read the Andrews and Baird text and the case reader to prepare for class.
You aren't likely to succeed in this class without reading the required text.

We expect you to ALWAYS integrate concepts from the Andrew's and Baird text reading
(and where appropriate the Rees Facilitation reading) with your essay responses--including
making connections with the text readings in your case facilitation reflection essay assignment.

We expect you to do your homework and turn it in on schedule.
We expect  EVERYONE to pull their weight in your facilitation teams, not just during the facilitation.

We expect you to attend class, even after you have presented your facilitation.
We honor our attendance and participation policy and factor this into grades.
We believe learning can be fun, but it is very apparent that some students are not prepared for the self-managed team/learning organization approach of our class.
This train is moving fast, and if you are not committed to the above groundrules, you have time to get off before the May 27 final drop date.

Week 5  2011

Monday    Life at Google (facilitation)

"Don't Be Evil" (Google's mantra)! Come prepared to participate in a lively discussion about Planet Google!

Your Google team has not assigned a reading for Monday. They will show video footage and provide handouts for in-class discussion.

As for Wednesday, we are still working through a minor scheduling snafu with our Crisis team. Let's keep a sense of humor. We will
update this post by Sunday with a possible assignment due Wednesday. You will not be expected to read anything for Monday.
If the crisis team does not present on Wednesday--we will work on resumes. You may want to pull yours out for an update.
Don't have a resume? You will want to begin playing around with resume ideas.
If we don't get to resumes this Wednesday--it will be sometime soon! Enjoy the weekend.

IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION SURVEY

One of the goals of the Speech Department at DeAnza is to help our students
gain confidence by reducing their communication apprehension. To give us
both an idea of your level of communication apprehension at the beginning
of the course, please complete The Personal Report of Communication
Apprehension (PRCA-24) by Sunday 10:30 p.m. It is an online survey designed
to help you get a sense of your level of communication apprehension (in a
speech; during group work etc.). The results of this PRCA-24 survey will be
used primarily to help improve instructional activities and student
learning while class is still in progress.

ALL STUDENT INFORMATION INCLUDED IN THIS SURVEY IS CONFIDENTIAL. Completing
this survey counts towards your participation grade in this class. You
should easily be able to complete the survey in 10 minutes or less. Please
go to:

http://www.research.fhda.edu/cgi-bin/rws3.pl?FORM=prcapre [1]

In order to gain the maximum benefit from this survey, please read the
instructions carefully and answer the questions truthfully.

Week 3

Due Monday
1) Come prepared with ideas for your team project.

2) Read p. 33-50 Rees

Facilitation Reading
We also strongly recommend Rees Facilitator Excellence Handbook p. 9-16
(Google Rees Facilitator Excellence Handbook, click on content)

3)Respond to the following questions in a one-page essay. (I will collect these Wednesday.)

What is required of me to be an effective facilitator? What are my facilitation strengths? What facilitation skills do I need to work on/develop?

Answers will be evaluated based on (1)quality of answer,
(2)completeness, and (3)clarity and coherence of writing.  Consider
what you can do to make your writing original instead of copying word
for word from the text.  When relevant, use examples from your own
personal experience to support your responses. Answers for each
questions should be approximately 1 page, typed, double-spaced. (10
points possible)

Have a great weekend.

The following is dated material.

I want you to read through  the portfolio and presentation assignments and begin thinking about which option you might choose. On Wednesday we will explain these assignments in more detail and give examples of what students have done in the past so you can make an informed choice.   Students generally are quite creative and have a lot of fun with these assignments. I've had presentations on everything from what makes Google a great company to work for to how to handle gender discrimination in the workplace. Whatever your topic--it must relate directly to organizational communication.  On the other hand, if you choose to prepare a portfolio, you may take a general approach and include a variety of documents that represent who you are and what you have accomplished--or you may create a portfolio focused on a specific educational or career path such as art, nursing, or computer science. This will all make more sense when we discuss specific examples on Wednesday.  And of course, you will have ample opportunity to ask questions about the assignments. Print out the presentation and portfolio assignments and bring these to class with you.   Be sure to purchase your texts so you can begin reading the text and casebook for our Monday discussion. See specifics in the Week 1-2 Assignments document below. Let me know by e-mail if you have a problem opening a document.  Have a great first week!

Casebook    Introduction  p. 1-14 Case Assignment Prep (Please come prepared)

Review the section headings in the casebook and identify 2 or 3 sections
you are interested in facilitating. Your team will decide who will
    facilitate which section in class.

Read case analysis assignment. I don't expect you to fully understand the
assignment until we discuss the assignment in class Monday.

April 21   Text Ch. 13  Preparing for and Supporting Your Speech 453-479

Questions Due Wednesday:
1. How important are examples in developing your ideas for a presentation? Why? Which kind of examples do you feel are generally most effective? Why?

2. Develop a specific purpose and thesis statement for a presentation that you could present in this class. The topic should be relevant to organizational communication. What kinds of things might you cover in this speech?  Consider ways you might relate your topic to the concepts we are studying in class. How could/would you involve your audience? What references might you use? Be sure you have read through the presentation assignment before answering this question.
As with all other assignments, you will speak from experience and make direct connections to constructs from the sources you select. You may develop your speech by extending on one of your essay homework assignments.

(Note: We will review ch. 14 in class. If you want to learn more about organizing and delivering speeches you may read through ch. 14.)

More topics--

How to effectively use PowerPoint for  business presentations

Why workplace culture is important

Cultural dissonance

Do companies have to be evil?

Facilitation

If you plan to give a presentation, do some refining of your presentation plan and bring it in to discuss in class. Generally, the more you have completed on your plan, the more valuable the feedback. We will assign your presentation date.

Sample presentation plan

Thinking outside the box

Im going to give a presentation on how companies like Google create a work environment to support Aha thinking /thinking outside the box and how this keeps them on the cutting edge. Googlers main incentive is to create! Its what they love to do. But you cant force creativity. So how can an organization create a culture of creativity?

Presentation Plan
1. Begin with a mind teaser /activity to get the audience to see how the Ah ha factor works (audience involvement  /PowerPoint slide)  (sourceThe Eureka Hunt by Jonah Lehrer published in the New Yorker)
2. Explain the importance of thinking outside the box + aha thinking  in today's world and specifically in organizations
3. Describe how the creative mind works (sourcesMind Control Class at De Anza and Leading Minds by Howard Gardner)
4. Develop in some detail two examples
a. How Google engenders a thinking outside the box culture (source Planet Google by Randall Stross) (PowerPoint image of googleplex)
b. Captain Sullys story/How landing on the Hudson is an example of thinking outside the box /"aha" thinking (PP image of Airbus A320 on Hudson)
5. Describe what the audience can learn/take from this discussion/presentation. How can you use it in your lives/work/school? Have the audience discuss at their tables other examples of thinking outside the box/aha thinking and/or companies that engender this sort of creative culture.
6. End with another mind teaser.

Due Monday April 26

Text    Ch. 1 Ethics and Values

Question:
1. Create your own question for the ethics chapter and answer the question.
2. How would you describe the core values of a company you admire or work for? (Do your researchlook on-line for a description of core values for the company you chose. Attach the description.)  In what ways do you think the company does or does not live up to these core values?

April 28  Case Discussion Teams

Your facilitator for this week has assigned a case for you to read.  If you don't know which case--then contact one of your team members. Be sure to come fully prepared to discuss the case.

Some of you have asked for a description of the devil's advocate role. Here goes--

Devils Advocate
  • Remains on guard against groupthink  (when the pressure to reach group consensus is so great that the individual members surrender their own opinions to avoid conflict and view issues solely from the groups perspective).
  • Ensures that all arguments have been heard, and looks for holes in the groups decision-making process, in case there is something overlooked.
  • Keeps his or her mind open to problems, possibilities, and opposing ideas. Often presents opposing ideas in the form of a question.
April 19    Casebook    Introduction  p. 1-14 Case Assignment Prep

Review the section headings in the casebook and identify 2 or 3 sections
you are interested in facilitating. Your team will decide who will
        facilitate which section in class.

June 16    Portfolio Due/Share Portfolio

Due 5/3    Text    Ch. 10    All    (Please review guidelines for writing responses to review questions and remember one of our ground rules is to speak from experience. Another ground rule is to make direct connections to the reading and to use at least one source citation from the reading.)
Questions: Choose 2 from the following 3
1. How do groups exert pressure for uniformity?  How do deviates respond to social influence?
2. What are some positive and negative factors associated with highly cohesive groups?  How is groupthink related to cohesiveness?
3. Distinguish between task, relationship, and self-centered roles. Give at least three examples of each.

We will also discuss speech major and certificate options. Speech majors please fill out your paperwork, and make an appointment to go over your specialty area with me.

5/5 Process/Principles to remember while facilitating
  • Guide the group in establishing vision/what do we want to accomplish.
  • Come prepared with event plan.
  • Provide opportunities for everyone to speak. A process consultant, when successful, rather than steer the group with expert knowledge empowers the group to explore and solve their own problems now and in the future.
  • If an idea comes up that drifts from the topic, post it in the "parking lot" to address at an appropriate time. Be sure to revisit these ideas before ending the event to determine if they need further exploration.
  • Listen deeply and actively.
  • Co-construct richer stories and perspectives.
  • Experience trust and respect regardless of viewpoint.
  • Record the conversation. You can ask others to record.
  • Summarize frequently what you are hearing as a way of ensuring that you're capturing the ideas, perspectives, and emotions of the participants. You can ask others to summarize.
  • Check in frequently/ask for feedback (e.g. "how are we doing"?).
  • Before moving on to the next topic make sure the perspectives of all participants have been airdd and explored.
  • Before ending the event, summarize what has occurred within your group and ask the group if they would like to add, delete, or change any portion of the summary.

5/10

Hi students, As we pick up the course load for our projects (case facilitation/analysis, portfolios, presentations) we will cut back on the number of review questions for most weeks.  Here is our agenda for this Monday--
  • Discuss ch. 2 review questions/answers.
  • Break into teams to brainstorm portfolio and presentation ideas. (It will help if you have your answers to ch. 13 with you.)
  • Spend about 10 minutes in our case discussion teams/facilitator assign case.
  • If time permits we will also talk briefly about resumes.

5/10        Text    Ch. 2     p. 47-75

Questions: Choose 1 from the following 4
1. In your opinion, why has the amount of communication in organizations increased but the quality of communication not improved?
2. What might cause an organization to take an activities approach to communication rather than a results approach?
3. How is communication a process in an organization?
4. What do you see as being the potential benefits of the so-called information age? Potential problems?

In addition to discussing the above questions, we will work in teams discussing/refining presentations/portfolios .

If doing a portfolio, bring a list of some of the things you plan to include in your portfolio--and/or bring in what you have already compiled for your portfolio.

Due Monday May17

Text    Ch. 6  Effective Listening/Dealing with Difficult People
(Note: Draw on concepts from other chapters for your case discussion.)

Question: Use your case discussion group as a basis for responding to the question.

1. Describe at least two barriers to listening that you have observed in your case discussion group. Describe ways in which you and other members of your group have been helpful as listeners. What is one thing you will do to improve your own listening in your case discussion group and in other situations?

Note to Speech Majors--please get your paperwork in to me or another f.t. speech faculty member by next week. We can meet before/after class to discuss if you like.

June 14    Presentations

June 16    Portfolio Due/Share Portfolio       Resume Final Draft Due
You will select one or two things you want to showcase from your portfolio to show and describe. You have five minutes to show and tell. This is an ungraded, impromptu presentation. Your time should be spent preparing your portfolio--not your presentation. Be creative. Have fun! Here are some options (you are not limited to these)--

1. Illustrate and/or demonstrate a talent or hobby you are especially proud of from your portfolio. You can do this with video or an actual demonstration. Begin by giving us a sense of context. Students have demonstrated music, theater, movie animation, art, clothing design, and a portion of a video taped speech.

2. Describe who or what influenced an achievement you are most proud of from your portfolio.

3. What one concept, idea, or theme ties your portfolio together? Why did you choose this concept/theme/idea?

4. Choose one person who wrote a letter of reference that you included in your portfolio. How would that person describe you to a selection committee for an important position?

5. If the New York Times was to write an article about you based on your portfolio, what would the article say?

6. Where do you see yourself professionally in five years? How do you think your portfolio will change in the next five years?

7. Imagine you are about to interview for your dream college or career. What would you most want the audience (selection committee) to remember about you/portfolio? Why? How would you make it stick?

Please go to the following website and complete the on-line PRCA-24 survey. We took the same survey at the beginning of the quarter. This is the end-of-quarter post-test. Thanks. Have a great week!!
