Questions Week 3,4,5

April 20
Casebook    Introduction  p. 1-14 Case Assignment Prep (Please come prepared)

Review the section headings in the casebook and identify 2 or 3 sections
you are interested in facilitating. Your team will decide who will
    facilitate which section in class.

Read case analysis assignment. I don't expect you to fully understand the
assignment until we discuss the assignment in class Monday.

April 22   Text Ch. 13  Preparing for and Supporting Your Speech 453-479

Questions Due Wednesday:
1. How important are examples in developing your ideas for a presentation? Why? Which kind of examples do you feel are generally most effective? Why?

2. Develop a specific purpose and thesis statement for a presentation that you could present in this class. The topic should be relevant to organizational communication. What kinds of things might you cover in this speech?  Consider ways you might relate your topic to the concepts we are studying in class. How could/would you involve your audience? What references might you use? Be sure you have read through the presentation assignment before answering this question.

(Note: We will review ch. 14 in class. If you want to learn more about organizing and delivering speeches you may read through ch. 14.)

April 27    Text    Ch. 1 Ethics and Values
Question Due Monday:
1. Create your own question for the ethics chapter and answer the question.
2. How would you describe the core values of a company you admire or work for? (Do your research—look on-line for a description of core values for the company you chose. Attach the description.)  In what ways do you think the company does or does not live up to these core values?

April 29  Case Discussion Teams

Your facilitator for this week has assigned a case for you to read.  If you don't know which case--then contact one of your team members. Be sure to come fully prepared to discuss the case.

Some of you have asked for a description of the devil's advocate role. Here goes--

Devil’s Advocate
  • Remains on guard against “groupthink”  (when the pressure to reach group consensus is so great that the individual members surrender their own opinions to avoid conflict and view issues solely from the group’s perspective).
  • Ensures that all arguments have been heard, and looks for holes in the group’s decision-making process, in case there is something overlooked.
  • Keeps his or her mind open to problems, possibilities, and opposing ideas. Often presents opposing ideas in the form of a question.

May 4, 2009

Hi students, Time to take a breather. As we pick up the courseload for our projects (case facilitation/analysis, portfolios, presentations) we will cut back on the number of review questions for most weeks. I will update review questions later this week. Here is our agenda for this evening--

  • Discuss ch. 10 review questions/answers.
  • Break into teams to brainstorm portfolio and presentation ideas. (It will help if you have your answers to ch. 13 with you.)
  • Spend about 10 minutes in our case discussion teams/facilitator assign case.
  • Discuss speech major and certificate options. Meet one-on-one with speech majors.
WEEK SIX

Due Monday May 11    Communicating in Diverse Workplaces
(in place of Managing Information Flow)

Answer question 1.

1. Author Brenda Allen discusses throughout Chapter Nine—Communicating Social Identity—the concept of Thinking Under the Influence (T.U.I) of prejudices, stereotypes, and dominant ideologies. Please describe an event in your life where you were T.U.I. with negative assumptions and/or stereotypes that turned out to be incorrect.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AND choose one from the following to answer.

2. Reflect on your own class, race, and gender and describe what privileges you do and don’t have because of where you stand in society.

3. In what ways does mass media reinforce gender stereotypes, and/or race and ethnic stereotypes in an organizational or social hierarchy?

4. How does self-awareness of your sexual orientation facilitate or hinder how you communicate with others at home? At work? With friends? In school? (Choose the setting you can relate to a personal example.)

Due Wednesday May 13

Read and be prepared to discuss Case Study--The Harassment Case--for Wednesday (p. 349-354 in Mike's handout). This week’s facilitators (Natalia, Brett, Jonathan White, and Natalia) will prepare case discussion questions for The Harassment Case.

Reflection Essay

Due Tuesday Feb 23
Keeping in mind that true strength and learning are found not in perfection, but in understanding our own limitations—take a look at your informative speech video and review your informative speech feedback from peers and instructor. Remember we are trying to learn from our experiences, keep doing what is working well, and not make the same mistakes. Write a 1-page double-spaced essay on what you learned from viewing your video and from the feedback. Include the following— (10 points)

- what did you do well that you want to continue to do?

- what specifically do you plan to work on to improve your next presentation?

- what one thing will make the biggest difference?
- how do you plan to make improvements?
- what is your biggest fear about giving your next speech?

Hi students, It is one thing to miss a day of class every couple weeks or so. It is yet another to show up to class one or two days every couple of weeks. Some of you have not been in class to participate in your feedback cluster and some of you have far exceeded attendance policies. If you plan to complete the quarter I expect you to show up to class on a regular basis. Just a reminder as we are nearing the last day to drop w/ "W".

Sample Survey
Tues-Review the sample survey and prepare one based on your own speech topic.
-Place your name and class hour at the top of the page.
-Write your proposition as shown on the sample.
   - Q #1 should be the same on everyone's outline
To what extent do you agree with this proposition? 1-2-3-4-5-6...10  Why?
   -Prepare 4-6 additional questions.
-Have someone review your survey to see that it makes sense to him/her.
-Print out 30 copies to distribute in class. We will fill surveys out in class and return them to you before the end of the class hour. I need one blank copy of your survey to grade.
-First week speakers will hand out their surveys on Wednesday of this week.
-Second week speakers will hand out their surveys on Thursday of this week.

ducks
hi students, i am very thankful to spend these last precious days with my father. what matters most are the moments, as we float in the ripples of time. i have a lifetime of memories at our ranch where my father was born 92 years ago. the ducks in the picture are floating in the stream at our ranch. see you monday.

Due Monday March 1 (5 points poss) (Does not have to be in essay form.)
Identify your proposition.
List your main points/arguments.
List at least one counterargument.
Identify your organizational pattern (statement of reasons, problem-solution, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, refutation,  cause-effect).

I will review your proposition, arguments, and counterargument(s) Monday and return these to you Tuesday with my comments. This will help you with your persuasive speech outline drafts which are due Wednesday.

Monday is an important day. We will do a fun  group impromptu "sell-it" where you creatively and persuasively sell a fictitious product to the class that your group creates. Your impromptu will basically follow an infomercial format. I will show a sample and bring guidelines to class. This impromptu is worth 10 points and can not be made up. This impromptu is important because it shows you how to apply persuasive speech strategies. All preparation will be in class--as is the nature of impromptus.

M-Sell-It Impromptu (10 pts poss)
T-PRCA-24 post-test + lab research + works cited list (5 pts poss) + counterargument discussion

  • prepare a works cited list following mla procedures (see deanza library site for correct procedures)/include in outline draft
3 steps to counterargument

Thursday March 4

http://www.research.fhda.edu/cgi-bin/rws3.pl?FORM=Peer_Feedback

Students, your persuasive peer review is especially important since I will not give feedback on your persuasive draft outlines before you present. If you were not in class Wednesday, then review the persuasive peer review guidelines
Persuasive Peer Review 2010 and have a couple of your classmates review, comment, and discuss your outline with you before, after, or outside of class. You will attach these drafts w/ peer comments to your final draft outline. Once you have completed the peer review process--then go on-line to complete the peer feedback survey. Send me an e-message letting me know  you have completed the peer review process and also let me know who reviewed your outline. If you are able to complete this by Tuesday March 9, I will give you credit for completing the assignment. Thanks.
