Music 56 is an intermediate guitar class designed for students interested in playing popular music styles. It is a study of the common practices used in jazz, rock and blues music. Guitar styles from the 1940’s to the present will be examined through the use of recordings, demonstrations and written examples. This course will start with the blues including it’s form, riff styles and techniques for both accompanying and soloing. The class will progress through scales and chord voicings commonly found in jazz, rock and blues styles. Specific guitar techniques will be demonstrated in class and students will have a chance to practice these techniques in a classroom setting. Chord voicings, scales, right-hand techniques, and the development of solo and accompaniment skills in these styles will be emphasized. Specific songs in each style will be presented for the students to learn and then demonstrate their knowledge through performance tests.
