READING AND WRITING

I would like to extend a warm hello and welcome to every student in this class. My name is Alan Simes and I look foward to getting to know each one of you as we all spend twelve weeks together. You all have signed up for a course known formally as EWRT 1C: Composition and Reading. So what will we be reading, writing and researching this quarter?

READING

This quarter we will be reading short stories, poetry, and plays. There is one additional book called Writing Analytically, which serves as our "how to write anaytical essays" book for the quarter, teaching us how to read and write analytically.

Kennedy, Gioia, Backpack Literature, (3rd Edition), Pearson, Longman

Rosenwasser, Stephen, Writing Analytically (5th edition), Thompson, Wadsworth

Note: The two course textbooks will be needed beginning on day two of the course so make sure you have them then AND in the correct editions.

WRITING

There will be three essays and one miderm.

ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

There will be a short quiz before nearly EVERY CLASS MEETING, to be taken the night or morning before class via the Catalyst course website. Weekly, there will also be individual student presentations and group presentations as well.

All quizzes and the midterm will be done online, via our Catalyst course website.

CATALYST

CATALYST is De Anza College's own online course management system that provides the online interface for this course. Just go to https://catalyst.deanza.edu/ and log on with your user ID and password. You will be automatically sent to our specific course website. Be aware that this site is only functional starting on the first day of classes.

We will be using our Catalyst course website to host the course syllabus, have onine discussions, turn in assignments and take tests. With a little patience and time, you will be able to easily learn and manage this online system. Remember that I and your fellow classmates are ready to help, so don't give up if you reach a temporary technological dead-end--just ask for help!

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain only ONE email account for class use--the same one you use for De Anza registration and for our Catalyst course website.

Complete all assignments on time--if you skip assignments for a week or longer or turn in two or more late assignment. you may be dropped from the class and/or fail. All required assignments must be completed in order to recieve a grade of "C" or higher in the course. Late work may be accepted but will negatively affect your overall course grade.

Write approximately 4,000 words or more.

Active, weekly participation, both in-class and online when required.

Students who have been inactive a week or more, either through missing more than two classes or missing a week's worth of assignments (including quizzes) will be dropped for non-participation. Nearly all of our time will be spent on activities that must be performed in a timely manner. Falling behind isn't an option. Careful reading and preparation is crucial.

Collect and maintain all writing assignments throughout the quarter, including all of your listserv postings, in a separate folder on the hard drive of your computer (or wherever you store your virtual files).

IMPORTANT: if you have any kind of emergency affecting your involvement in this course you must contact me about it, before if possible. You are responsible for all class activities so act accordingly. Keep me informed of emergencies and problems that affect your performance and ask for my help if you need it.

GRADES

There are approximately 500 points possible in this course. There will be one midterm worth 50 point, and three essays. The first essay will be worth 50 points, the second 100 and the third 200. There will be fifteen to twenty very short quizzes (2-5 points/questions per quiz), and at least one student presentation worth 20 points. Participation will count for 50 points and for this you will be graded on the quality, quantity, frequency and consistency of your classroom and online contributions to the class.

Final grades will be assessed on the basis of a class curve.

PLAGIARISM POLICY

Because I respect the opinions and ideas of others, I am strongly against cheating and stealing and will uphold a strict plagiarism policy. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT VERY CAREFULLY:

1. Students who submit the work of others in whole or in part will receive a zero for that assignment and may fail the course if the plagiarism continues.

2. Incidents of cheating will be reported to the Dean of Language Arts.

3. Plagiarized assignments may not be revised or resubmitted.

It is the student's responsibility to cite sources and avoid sloppy research. Be sure that any phrases, sentences, or paragraphs that you did not create get placed in quotation marks and be sure to attribute them to their author. Plagiarism is easy to spot so ask for help before you throw your grade away.

If you feel you need to do some research but are not sure how to quote an author or document your sources, ASK FOR HELP. There are also several useful resources on the web. You can start by checking out Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing from The Online Writing Lab at Purdue (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_quotprsum.html).

CONTACTING THE INSTRUCTOR

The only way to reach me is to email me at simesalan@fhda.edu. I will get back to everyone's email within 24 hours and usually much sooner.
