OF IN-CLASS AND OUT-OF-CLASS WORK
In-class and out-of-class
work for this class is designed to challenge and improve your abilities to
read, write, and think about complex issues.
In-class work will include group activities, discussions of the
readings, editing and proofreading workshops, and in-class writing.
ESSAYS
AND EXAMS
You
are required to write seven essays, five outside of class and two in
class. You must complete all
out-of-class essays, though you will be allowed to drop one grade, so that only
the four highest out-of-class essay grades will be counted. One in-class essay will be scheduled around
midterm week and the second one will be your final exam. Both of these will count toward your grade
for the course.
All
out-of-class essays should be typed.
Double space between lines and leave an inch margin. Use a paper clip or a staple to fasten the
pages of your essay together. Drafts
must be handed in with the final copy.
Essays that are not submitted by the beginning of
class on the day they are due will lose 10 points for each class day they are
late. If you are not in class on a day
an essay is due, you are still responsible for getting the paper to me on time.
SHORT RESPONSESOnce or twice a week I will offer a prompt (reading or
question) to which you will write a short (200 word) response. These can be typed or handwritten. Each of these short responses will be worth
10 pts. You must complete 10 of them
(about one a week). If you do more than
10, I will count only the highest 10 grades.
Short responses will not be accepted late.
ATTENDANCE
Because so much help is given
during class, students who do not attend regularly are putting themselves in
danger of failing the course. In order
to prevent such a tragedy, I have supplied some motivation for attendance. Students who miss more than three classes
FOR ANY REASON will be dropped from the class.
To avoid this possibility, do not miss class except for emergency or
illness. If you should have a
protracted illness or personal problem that prevents you from attending class,
contact me as soon as possible to see what can be worked out. If you know in advance that you will be
absent from class, let me know so that I can give you the assignments you will
be missing. Whenever you miss a class,
you are responsible for finding out what information, instructions, or
assignments you have missed: you should complete the assignments before
returning to class.
GETTING
HELP
If
you would like help with the readings, essays, or projects, you can make an
appointment to see me, or you can call me at home between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00
p.m. If I’m not at home when you call,
leave a message on my machine, and I’ll call you back as soon as I can. You can also reach me by e-mail, which I try
to check every evening. I am happy to
assist you in any way. The earlier you
see me about problems, the easier it will be to solve them.
The
Reading and Writing Center, located in ATC 309, can also provide you with
help. During its hours of operations,
tutors are available to help on a drop-in basis. If you feel you would like to meet with a tutor on a regular
basis, you can contact the Tutorial and Academic Skills Center in L-47. Individual tutoring, self-paced classes to
work on specific problems such as spelling or punctuation, and workshops on
specific skills are offered by their staff.
