EWRT 2

This class will critically examine multiple facets of American popular culture. By analyzing shopping, advertising, film, gender constructions, and American heroes, we will develop a critical understanding of how we construct ourselves. We also will consider how advertisers construct reality for us, and how they appeal to contemporary consumers. We will use the semiotic approach to all subjects, and write analytical and argumentative essays related to the topics discussed in the readings, films, and in class. We will also practice researching academic papers, and will conduct outside research leading to analysis, comparison, self-reflection, and synthesis in a documented, original, research paper.
