My BackgroundTeaching Experience
As a professor with specialties in technical writing, business, British literature, composition, and humanities, I have been teaching for over a decade. I began at Brigham Young University where I taught courses in Western Humanities. Next I taught at Utah Valley State College in the English and humanties departments. I have landed at De Anza College in California's Bay Area (my native state) where I teach Technical Writing, Business, English, and Reading.
Corporate Experience
In addition to my career as a college professor, I worked in corporate America in a number of capacities. In Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C., I functioned as a marketing and strategic planning consultant, National Training Manager, and professional trainer/writer for clients such as American Express, AT&T, General Motors, and Princeton University. I also worked at Franklin Covey as a Developer and at Ameritech Library Services as a Technical Writer.
Education
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Humanities and English from Brigham Young University. I have completed doctoral coursework in British Literature at The George Washington University in D.C. I also complete graduate courses in Jordan in the Middle East through UCSB in the summer of 2006 where I studied Arabic, archeology, history, and middle east studies.
Guatemala
I spent a year living and working in Guatemala as an Educational Consultant for the Rose Education Foundation where I organized the foundation, trained native administrators and teachers, developed curriculum for Spanish language and literature, mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences for grades prekindergarten through ninth.
Other Experiences Abroad
As an undergraduate, I lived and studied in London, England for six months and toured around much of western europe. As a humanities faculty member at UVSC, I took a group of students on an art history month abroad to ten countries starting in England and ending in Greece. In 2001, I went to Spain for vacation and fell in love with this amazing country. In 2003, I spent a few weeks in Costa Rica catching huge tunas, snorkeling with sharks, and flying through the jungle attached to cables with a single harness. In 2005, I took a group of students on a campus abroad for the quarter to Spain where we studied Humanities and English and danced some flamenco. And in Fall of 2008, I am excited to accompany a group of Foothill-De Anza students on a campus abroad program to London, England, where I will teach English and humanities classes and eat lots of scones with clotted cream.
The Middle East
I have recently begun exploring the Middle East. In December of 2005, I spent a few weeks in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and in Jordan. I quickly became interested in the Middle East and began looking for additional opportunities to explore this fascinating part of the world. I was accepted into a Fulbright program through UCSB's Middle East Studies Program where I studied Arabic, archeology, history, political science, and education in Jordan for the summer of 2006.
