Prerequisite: Psychology 1

  1. Course Description: A survey of major theories and concepts of psychopathology. Methods of classification, psychodiagnosis, and techniques of psychotherapy.

  2. Course Objectives:

    The student will be able to:

    A. Describe and explain historical and contemporary views of abnormal behavior.
    B. Identify biological, psychosocial , and sociocultural perspectives of abnormal behavior
    C. Recognize and explain major techniques of assessment and diagnostic classification.
    D. Recognize the major influences of stress, anxiety, personality, physiologic and affective factors.
    E. Understand the major differences between pathological behavior patterns, including mood, thinking, sexual, substance-use, and organic disorders.
    F. Describe and explain the major techniques of psychotherapy

  3. Required Texts: Abnormal Psychology, 4th Edition. Durand and Barlow, Wadswortth, 2004.

  4. Evaluation: There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination. They will be composed of multiple choice, fill-in flanks, and short answer essay questions. In addition, unannounced quizzes or assignments will be given. If missed, these cannot be made up. Students will be expected to take notes on all lectures, demonstrations, handouts and films. This will be included on quizzes and exams. Make-up exams may be granted only with verification of illness or "acts of God." Three mental status exams will be conducted based on case studies given in class. These written analyses will be structured from the DSM IV.

  5. Grading: The course grade will be determined by the total number of points earned. The grading scale will be on a modified class curve. Extra credit may be announced.

  6. Attendance: You will be expected to attend all class meetings. Three points will be deducted for each class absence. You will be dropped when you have missed FOUR classes. Students who drop the class MUST process a withdrawal through the Registrars Office in order to avoid an F. Final exam must be taken to avoid an F grade.
