Writing Advice


  • Clear thesis
  • PIE Paragraphs- point, illustration/information, explanation
  • Brainstorm before writing
  • Examples based on personal experience
  • Write a draft/freewriting
  • Keep it simple stupid KISS
  • Think about what you’re writing/ organize it
  • Prewrite/ list points
  • Don’t rush/when stuck, ask someone for a new idea
  • 5Ws1H- Who what why when where how
  • Proofread
  • Verify your opinion
  • Use details when describing
  • Watch your tone and audience
  • Have an outline while writing
  • Discuss the topic with a friend before writing
  • Make sure topic sentence relates back to the thesis
  • Consider potential readers (age, sex, etc.)/ reread several times
  • Use quotations to prove your idea
  • Revise a day after writing a draft (not right away)
  • Include transitions from one topic to the next
  • Stick to your main idea (don’t go off topic)
  • Don’t have a title that repeats a phrase from your essay
  • Use different vocabulary words (things)
  • Use conjunctions./FANBOYS to connect ideas (more complex sentences)
  • For, so, yet, but, and, nor, or
  • Use specific, detailed examples
  • Know the writing topic
  • Have someone else proofread your paper
  • Avoid writing in the 1st person (Using “me” & “I”)  I believe that.. In my opinion
  • Use spellcheck/grammar check
  • Use complete sentences, not choppy ones
  • If you have trouble starting, don’t worry about grammar/mechanics/organization
