SHAKESPEARE - ELIT 17- Winter 2009

Goals:
· Interpret Shakespeare's writings in relationship to social, intellectual, and literary contexts.
· Apply generic expectations of dramatic performance, comedy, tragedy, history and sonnet to Shakespeare's writings.
· Examine the social and cultural stereotypes in Shakespeare's writings.
· Recognize the contemporary relevance and historical specificity of Shakespeare's writings through examination of modern dramatic interpretations, rewritings, and adaptations.
· Compare the dilemmas faced by Shakespeare's characters to those presented by the modern world.
· Closely examine Shakespeare's use of language.
· Develop and compare alternative interpretations of and approaches to the texts.

William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing William Shakespeare, King Lear
Requirements:
1. Regular attendance & active participation in discussions.
2. Keeping up-to-date on the reading and bringing a copy of the play each time.
3. Eleven homework assignments and quizzes.
4. At least one meeting with the instructor.
5. Two midterms
6. Two or three essays.
7. Participation in enacting a scene from one of the plays.
8. A final exam.
Grades:
90-100% = A, 88-89%=B+, 80-87% = B, 78-79%=C+, 70-77%=C, D=60=69%. A- and B- reserved for special cases. [Possible 450 points]
Quizzes and Homework = 15 points each and I drop the lowest [150 points]
Papers = 40 points each for first two = 80 points Midterms = 30 points each (60 points)
Final = 100 points
Participation in acting scene = 30
Class participation, including attendance = 30 points
Notes:
You must attend every day or I will assume that you have dropped the class (2 unexcused absences = automatic drop). Please telephone in advance if you must be absent for some dire emergency. Late papers will be penalized by automatic subtraction of points.
