FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions ( about the Distance Learning Telecourse)[Q] What is a Sociology Distance Learning Telecourse ? Is that the same thing as an online class?
[A] The Sociology distance learning telecourse is different from the traditional on-campus class, but it is not an online class. Instead of attending weekly classes on campus with the instructor, you will be watching a pre-produced videotape series. The videotapes are available for viewing in several ways. The series shows on your local cable network; or it is offered as a webcast (videostream) ( available at some colleges) that you you can watch on your home computer; or you can obtain copies of the videotapes for viewing from the Open Media Lab on the De Anza campus,or from the library at Mission College. Talk to the Open Media Lab or the Mission Library about checking-out the tapes for home use. Although you are not required to come to the campus for any classwork, you must still come to the campus for the exam review sessions and to take your exams. Exams cannot be given or taken online. This telecourse has a different format than an online course.
[Q] Do you teach an online class ?
[A] At this time I am not teaching an online class.
[Q] In the Sociology Distance Learning Telecourse are there any books to buy, or other class materials needed? What other class requirements are there?
[A] You will have to buy a textbook for the class, and you will need to buy scantron grading sheets for your exams ( available at the campus bookstore, and other locations). In the campus library at the reserve desk there may be a copy of the textbook available for student use. You are required to take your exams on campus; at the exams you will need to bring a scantron and #2 pencil. For viewing the videotapes, you will need access to a Television and VCR, a computer, or you can watch the tapes at the De Anza Open Media Lab or Mission College Library. With a computer and internet access, you can obtain your exam grades from the Instructor Website, and you can e-mail the instructor if you have questions about the class. If you do not have home access to the internet, you can still contact the Instructor on campus. In the Open Media Lab and Library, students may also have access to computers and the internet. Another class requirement is that you attend a class orientation on campus. All the class requirements are on the course syllabus available at the Instructor Website ( http://faculty.deanza.edu/pasionmark )
[Q] How do I register for the Sociology Distance Learning Telecourse ?
[A] You register for the Distance Learning classes at the same time, and using the same method that you register for all your other classes. Online registration is a common method students use to register for their classes. If you register for the distance learning class using the online method, you must still come to an on-campus orientation in order to learn about the class requirements. Students that are not registered for the class, can attend the on-campus orientation and talk to the instructor about adding the class. If the instructor agrees to add the student to the class, the student must then proceed to register for the class with the admissions and records office.
[Q] What is the on-campus orientation ?
[A] Registered students are required to attend the
on-campus orientation. This orientation allows the instructor to explain the class
requirements, and answer any questions that students have. The
on-campus orientation is usually the last opportunity that students
have to add the class, if the class has any open spaces left. After attending the on-campus orientation, you should
still go to the Instructor website (http://faculty.deanza.edu/pasionmark
) and download a copy of the class syllabus which details all of the
class requirements.
[Q]
I am registered for the Sociology Distance Learning class and I
missed the on-campus
orientation. What should I do? Will I be dropped from the class?
[A] Contact the Instructor immediately ( within 24 hours of the orientation) to retain your place in the class. The Instructor may add waiting students, and drop registered students that do not attend the orientation. If you are registered for the class already, and you miss the orientation, you should contact the Instructor, and then go to the Instructor website (http://faculty.deanza.edu/pasionmark
) and obtain a copy of the class syllabus from the Instructor Website,
and make sure you are aware of all the class requirements and the
testing dates. [Q] Can I still register for the Sociology Distance Learning class, or add the class after the on-campus orientation date ?
[A] You will have to contact the instructor to see if the class is full, or if space is still available. The instructor will allow students to add to the class up until the time the class is filled, as long as the last date to add has not passed. Admissions and records does not always have the most current information on class enrollment, so you may have to contact the instructor about obtaining permission to add.
[Q] What happens if I miss an exam or fail an exam ? Are make-ups offered ?
[A] There are no scheduled make-up exams. Make-up exams are problematic, and alternate exam dates and times will no longer be offered to distance learning students, and students must take the exams as scheduled in the class syllabus ( green sheet). If you miss taking an exam you will be automatically dropped from the class, or you may fail the class. The general guidelines are as follows. If you miss taking the first exam as scheduled, you will automatically be dropped with a "W" withdrawal. If you miss the second scheduled exam, you will be dropped with a "W" , unless the final drop date for the quarter/ semester has passed. If anytime after the final drop date, you fail to take an exam, the exam will be counted as a "zero", which may lead to you failing the class. I cannot issue a "W" grade to you after the final drop date, and I have to give you a letter grade in accordance with the college grading policy. You can do any extra credit that may be offered to help improve your grade, but the extra credit is very limited and subject to the guidelines outlined in the current class syllabus. Extra credit will never compensate for, and cannot substitute for a missed exam.
[Q] Is there any extra credit in the class ?
[A] There may be limited extra credit offered in this class. See the current class syllabus. Because of the class curve grading, extra credit is essentially already built into the reduced grading scale. When extra credit is offered, only one extra credit paper is allowed. There is not enough extra credit offered to compensate for a missed exam, or to compensate for multiple failed exams. Please see the class syllabus for more detailed information. ( http://faculty.deanza.edu/pasionmark ) I try to be objective in my grading, and exam scores are the primary factor in determining final grades. You must pass the exams in order to pass the class.
