Critical Enrollment Information for Students

As you know, California's community college system is trying to cope
with tremendous budget problems brought on by a dysfunctional state
budget. It is absolutely certain that this will affect your experience
at De Anza. Dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators all want to do
everything possible to help you succeed, but the reality is that we are
going to be hampered in our efforts by the dire budget circumstances
that affect us. With this in mind, please seriously consider the
following information and advice that can help you make the best of
this very difficult situation:

The College will offer several hundred fewer course sections this term. This will affect your ability to get the classes you want/need.

Low enrolled classes are far more likely to be canceled. In the
past we tended to let these classes go until the last moment in the
hope that they would fill. In the present situation the College will
"cut its losses" and cancel many of them early on. If you wait to enroll, the class you want will be more likely to be canceled.

Enroll for ALL of your classes as soon as possible.
If
you think you may want to take a class, sign up for it right away -
don't wait and contemplate. If you wait, it is very likely
that the class will be full or canceled, and you will be out of luck either way!
(If you over-enroll and have to drop a class, some other grateful
student will be ready to take your seat!)

If the class you want isn't immediately available and you cannot sign up for an alternate section right away, try to get on a waiting list, contact the instructor, and attend the first class meeting.

By enrolling in classes early and by enrolling in a full schedule
you will be far less likely to find that you are unable to get classes
because you waited. If you enroll for a full (or even over-full)
schedule, if one of your classes does get canceled you will have a better chance of getting enough classes to maintain your full-time status.

Be flexible. There is a
very good chance that you may not be able to get classes at the ideal
time or day. You may have to consider alternatives to the courses that
were your first choice. This is the new reality, and adapting to this
will help ensure your success.

Bottom line

Enroll and register as soon as possible.

Sign up right away for every class you may want to take.

Be as flexible as possible about your schedule.

Music Classes
The De Anza Music Department offers courses for everyone from beginners to music majors. You can take day, evening, and online sections of courses that fulfill degree and transfer general education requirements. Vocal, instrumental, and jazz performing groups are open to all De Anza students. Take a beginning instrument or voice class, learn to read music, discover Electronic Music, or join a performing group. Find more information on the Music Classes page.

Performing Groups
Do you wish you could play in the band or orchestra or sing in the choir? At De Anza College you can! Vocal, instrumental, and jazz performing groups are open to all De Anza students. Instrumental groups include a wind ensemble and chamber orchestra. There are choral groups for students of all levels and interests. The department has excellent vocal and instrumental jazz groups. Find out more on the Performing Groups page.

Concerts and Events
Music Department performing groups present public concerts each quarter. A free noon hour Thursday recital series brings outstanding performers to the campus several times each term. Student recitals are featured during the final three weeks of each quarter. Consult the Concerts and Events page for current information.

A list of department end-of-term concerts is available here: http://faculty.deanza.edu/mitchell/music1/extracreditevents

Music Faculty
The Music Department faculty includes teachers with broad experience in classical, jazz and popular music; voice, piano, guitar, brass, woodwinds and strings; electronic music; and composition and music theory. Many are active professional performers. A Music Department Faculty Directory is online.
