Office Hour Change - 3/21/12

I was delayed in getting to campus this morning and as a result I missed the first part of my scheduled 8:30 a.m. office hour. I have scheduled a make-up office hour for today at 12:00-12:30.

Finals Week - Spring 2013. Next week is "finals week" at De Anza College. A few important highlights for Music 1A students:
  • Monday, June 24 is a regular class meeting day - not part of the final exam schedule. We'll do several very important things in class on this day:
    • Retake of quiz 10
    • Presentation of two topics that are not fully presented in the text.
    • Extra credit reviews for weekend events are due.
  • After Monday we switch to the final exam schedule. For Music 1A students this means:
    • If you are in the 9:30 class:  Your final exam session is at 9:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. TUESDAY, JUNE 25 - attendance required.
    • If you are in the 10:30 class: Your final exam session is at 9:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26 - attendance required.
  • Note that final exams on not at the same times as the normal class meetings.

Important Monday (6/17/13) Deadlines. There are some important deadlines coming up this next Monday, June 17. Not all of them will affect all Music 1A students, but for some of you they could be very important. Please take a moment to review them today.
  • Deadline for the optional second concert report.* If you want to improve the concert report portion of your grade, the optional second report is your opportunity. If the grade on the optional report is higher than that on your first report, your overall concert report grade will be higher, based on a weighted average of the two grades that favors the second report.
  • Deadline to resubmit one earlier listening assignment. You may resubmit one of the earlier homework assignments from among assignments 1-8 and if you earn a higher grade on it this will replace the original grade on that assignment.
  • Deadline to request a retake of either test 1 or test 2.* You must turn in a written request at the Monday class that includes your name and specifies when test you would like to retake - either test #1 or test #2. Note that this is primarily to benefit students who failed one or more earlier tests - see the note below for an explanation.

Be sure to read the additional details in the course calendar regarding each of these options and other critical upcoming dates, assignments, deadlines, and so forth.

* The primary beneficiaries of the second report and the test retake option are students who might not otherwise be able to produce one non-failing concert report grade and two non-failing test grades - which are both requirements in order to earn a passing grade in Music 1A. Be sure to speak to me right away if you have question about this.

Also...

Note that two listening assignments are due next week. #9 is due at the start of class on Monday - the only Monday assignment deadline this quarter! #10 is due on Wednesday.

Maximizing Your Grade Near the End of the Term. We are now in the home stretch of the spring 2013 term, with about three weeks of classes plus final exam week remaining. If you are focusing on your grade at this point, there is still plenty of time to take steps that can make a difference.
  • As we focus on music of the Romantic and 20th-Century eras, take to heart what I've been suggesting about how to make sense out of the increasingly large number of composers and diverse ideas about music and how it is made. You can get a handle on this by working methodically now on your studying and review - and using some of the methods of organizing the material that we have talked about in class.
  • Be sure to complete and do your best work on remaining class work. In addition to the test, this includes the remaining listening assignments and the weekly quizzes. Your attention to timely and careful studying will help you on the quizzes, and review in preparation for retake quizzes can help a lot.
  • If your grade on the first concert report was not as high as you hoped or if you did not do the first report, make sure to do the second optional concert report. (Important note: Since a non-failing grade on one concert report is REQUIRED in order to earn a passing grade in Music 1A, you must do the second report if you earned an F or did not do the first report.) Attend your concert this weekend. Write a rough draft of all or part of the report right after the concert. Make an appointment to review this draft with me at an office hour during the first half of next week.
  • See the course calendar for information about an option to retake one of the first two tests if you earned lower than a C grade one of these tests. This is especially important if you missed a test or earned a failing grade on one test since you must earn non-failing grades on two tests in order to earn a passing grade in Music 1A.
  • See the course calendar for information about resubmitting one homework assignment from assignments #1-8 for a higher grade.
