Bush Street Freewrite

Colleague and friend John Lovas writes from a San Francisco Starbucks:

Most of the help in this Starbuck's appear Asian and about half the customers. That's pretty common around the city. I'm in a "sounds" neighborhood, too. Across the street is Cambridge Sound Works, The Art Store, and the good guys. Across Bush from the "guys," is The Sonoma Inn, a name you'd expect to find in wine country, not on a 5-story brick building that probably dates to after the '06 quake. There's an African-American couple: he's got dreads, a cellphone, a latte, and a Banana Republic bag. Can't get much more American than that. She holds nothing but his hand. A sweet sight at mid-day.

A Grade Question. Some students wonder - for good reason! - what it means when an asterisk ("*") appears next to the letter grade on a paper. (Some misinterpret this as a "+" but it is actually just an asterisk.)

I add the asterisk as an indication that I wrote something in the body of your paper that I would like you to read. Sometimes, for example, a paper may earn an A grade even though I notice something is a bit "off" about an answer - the asterisk may point you to that item that caught my attention.

The asterisk is only for your use - it is not part of your grade in my records.

Quiz Information Update. As announced in class, this week's quiz will be today. As a result next week's quiz will be on Tuesday rather than on Monday. I hope to have us back on the quiz-on-Monday schedule by the last week of classes, but stay tuned...
