Music 1A: Extra Credit

Extra Credit

Near the end of the quarter De Anza College performing groups present concerts on- and off-campus, and music students present a series of free student recitals on Thursdays at 12:30-1:20. Sometimes I give limited extra credit for attendance at these concerts.

NOTE: There is no guarantee that extra-credit assignments will be available each quarter, and it is possible that the conditions for earning extra credit may differ from those described here. Updated policies will be announced in class each quarter - usually during the second half of the term.

Any recital that qualifies for this credit will be specifically announced in class and on this web site. Please note that the only qualifying concerts are performances by De Anza College groups found on this page - no other events will qualify.

Dan Mitchell provides this list of end-of-term De Anza College Music Department concerts and recitals that are eligible for extra credit in his Music 1A classes. Events will be listed here during the final weeks of the current term. (Information may not be current until that time.)

Friday, November 20: De Anza Chamber Orchestra. Music by J.S. Bach, J.C. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven. 7:30 p.m. Visual and Performing Arts Center, De Anza College. $10, $5 Students/seniors. (IMPORTANT NOTE: I have also included this on the list of concerts for the Concert Report assignment. However if you use this event for you concert report you MAY NOT ALSO USE IT FOR EXTRA CREDIT.)
Saturday, November 21: De Anza College Wind Ensemble. 2:00 p.m. Visual and Performing Arts Center, De Anza College. (Ticket cost not known, but likely inexpensive or possibly free.) (IMPORTANT NOTE: I have also included this on the list of concerts for the Concert Report assignment. However if you use this event for you concert report you MAY NOT ALSO USE IT FOR EXTRA CREDIT.)
Thursday, December 3: Jazz Improvisation Class. 12:20 p.m. in room A31, De Anza College. Free admission.
Friday, December 4: Big Phat Band, De Anza Daddios, and Vocal Flight - jazz concert. 8:00 p.m. Visual and Performing Arts Center, De Anza College. $37.50, $48. See http://www.deanzadaddios.org/ for tickets or call 408-642-8999 x3450.
Saturday, December 5: "Choral Gems of the Season" - De Anza Choral groups with guest singers from the Santa Clara Men's Chorus. 7:30 p.m. De Anza College Visual and Performing Arts Center. $10, $5 students.
Sunday, December 6: De Anza College Combos Fall Concert. 1:00 p.m. $5. Visual and Performing Arts Center, De Anza College.
Sunday, December 6: Daddios Jazz Bands and Vocal Jazz Groups in Concert. 4:00 p.m. (Ticket cost unknown - likely in the $5 range.) Visual and performing Arts Center, De Anza College.

Thursday, December 3: Advanced Piano Student Recital. 10:00 a.m. Free admission. (Recital conflicts with my Music 1A classes - so this event will NOT count for extra credit in my classes. Students in other Music 1A-D classes may check with their instructors to see it this event qualifies.)

Assignment Details

In order to earn extra credit for recital attendance you must do the following:

Attend a recital from the preceding list. You must attend the entire recital from start to finish. If you arrive late or leave early you will not be eligible for credit. (Note: You may not earn extra credit for attending a concert in which you are a participant.)
Sign in and out on sheets that will be available at the recital up until 5 minutes before the scheduled start of the event. You must arrive before this time to check in or you will not be eligible for credit.*
Write a one page summary of each concert you attend, and cover the whole concert/recital. It may be a combination of objective description and subjective reaction, and it should touch briefly on all pieces performed.
This is not a concert report and it does not follow the concert report format. Do not write more than one page for each concert.
The summary must be typed (double- or single-spaced is fine) and it must be turned in no later than the start of the next class meeting following the event. Include the concert program and ticket stub if provided at the event. (In those cases where no further class meetings are scheduled after the event, an alternative deadline will be announced in class. It will typically be no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day following the concert.)

You may attend and report on up to three listed concerts or recitals for extra credit. The credit is generally enough to make raise a borderline grade to the next higher grade so you are strongly urged to take advantage of this opportunity.

These concerts are not eligible for concert reports unless they are separately listed in the Concert List. If a concert is listed both here and in the Concert List, you may use it for either a concert report or for extra credit but not for both. In other words, if you do a concert report on such an event you may not also use it for extra credit; if you use it for extra credit you may not also do a concert report on it.

* The procedure for signing in/out may vary. For example, when you arrive you may be given a slip of paper to fill out and return at the end, etc. If the instructor is not at the event to hand out and collect attendance slips you must include the concert program with the summary you hand in, and the summary must mention each of the pieces performed.
