Concert Update
I'm posting this to verify that the plans for getting your tickets to tonight's Symphony Silicon Valley concert at just as we discussed at today's class. (You can read the information lower on this page if you need to review it.)

See you at the concert! [ Discuss]

TONIGHT: Symphony Silicon Valley Concert!
Today in class is the last opportunity to add your name to the list of students who will get FREE TICKETS to attend tonight's concert of the Symphony Silicon Valley:

"Symphony Silicon Valley - Mendelssohn & Beethoven. "Associate Concertmaster Christina Mok performs Mendelssohn's supremely demanding Violin Concerto, the melody-filled centerpiece of a program led by Maestro George Cleve. Cleve opens with Beethoven's 1st Symphony, written at the peak of the composer's youthful classicism and instantly hailed as a masterpiece; and concludes with Debussy's brilliant, rule-breaking invocation to all the colors and moods of the sea. read more." 8:00 p.m. California Theatre , 345 S. First St., San Jose. (408) 885-1791."

As of this writing, the logistics for getting your ticket will work as follows:

  1. Your name must appear on my list of students who will attend the concert. Last chance to add your name to the list is during class this morning.
  2. I will have your tickets at the California Theatre before the concert. You will need to meet me there to obtain your ticket.
  3. Look for me in front of the theatre near the main entrance on 1st street.
  4. I will distribute tickets only until 7:15 p.m., about 15 minutes before the start of the event. You and I both will need some time to get into the hall and find our seats. If you arrive later than 7:15 you will likely NOT be able to pick up your ticket and you likely NOT be able to attend the concert.. (If you are late you can always ask at the box office - I cannot promise anything, but it is worth a try...
  5. With this in mind, along with other factors I have mentioned in class, PLAN TO ARRIVE WAY AHEAD OF TIME - DO NOT TAKE CHANCES THAT MAY CAUSE YOU TO MISS GETTING YOUR TICKET. Remember that you must a) drive to downtown San Jose, b) locate parking, c) park your car, d) locate and walk to the theatre, e) find me and get your ticket, f) use your ticket to enter the theatre, f) pick up a program and find your seat.
  6. Regarding the above, you are advised to plan on meeting me in front of the theatre by 7:00 p.m..

If there are any changes to this plan by late afternoon I will post an update on the class web site and - if possible - send another email bulletin. [ Discuss]

Test #1 Next Monday
The first midterm is scheduled for next Monday, October 20. As described in the course calendar, the subjects of this test include the units on Elements, Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Non-Western Music. You are responsible for material from the text, the recordings, and class sessions.

While some of the quiz questions will certainly make it onto the test, the test will also include many questions that were not on the quizzes. As you recall, the quizzes are based entirely on your reading of subjects that had not been covered in class on the quiz dates. Before the test these subjects will have been given additional coverage in class, and you will have done additional study of the recording and the book, and you will have completed several listening assignments based on this material.

Some additional notes about the test:

  1. The test starts promptly at the beginning of the class period. Please plan to come a few minutes early on the test day.
  2. You need to bring a pencil and the same Scantron form that we have used for the quizzes.
  3. The test will include a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions on the Scantron portion.
  4. There will be additional questions that you will answer by writing directly on the test form.
  5. At least one question will be based on recorded music played during class. I often like to include a question that asks you to describe what you hear in a musical example in areas such as melody, form, tempo/meter, instruments, dynamics, and so forth. A good way to prepare for this is to practice writing short descriptions of these elements while listening to music on your text CDs.
  6. If an emergency forces you to miss the test you must contact me immediately. Makeup or alternate tests will only be given in cases of real emergencies and only if you contact me immediately.

While I do not do any in-class review prior to the test, you are encouraged to post questions and topics in the class discussion forum by clicking the Post New Topic link in the sidebar of this page. [ Discuss]
