Quiz Information Update
As announced in class, this week's quiz will be today. As a result next week's quiz will be on Tuesday rather than on Monday. I hope to have us back on the quiz-on-Monday schedule by the last week of classes, but stay tuned... [ Discuss] |

Extra Credit List Updated
I added a couple more events to the Extra Credit concert list late yesterday - there are now a half dozen qualifying events on the list. Some important notes:
- Be sure to carefully read the Extra Credit page to understand the (rather simple) requirements for the extra credit assignment.
- Note that the written part of this work is very simple - and it is NOT a concert report or a concert review.
- Because this is extra credit I will not accept any work that is not submitted on time - all extra credit work must be submitted at the start of the very next class meeting after the concert. No extensions will be given for any reason.
- You may email the written part of the extra credit work rather than giving me a printed copy. You must still give me ticket/concert program by the "next class" deadline.
- As mentioned in class and on the Concert List and Extra Credit pages, two De Anza College events this weekend may be used for EITHER the concert report assignment OR for extra credit. You may not use any individual event for both.
- The only events that qualify for extra credit are those listed on my Extra Credit page. No there events are eligible for extra credit. (Additional events may be added to the list during the upcoming days/weeks.

Concert Report Due Date - Clearing Up the Confusion
During yesterday's class and the confusion about where we would meet and so forth... I posted something on the home page of this web site that was unclear regarding the due date for the concert report. Unfortunately, I didn't catch my error when I spoke about it to the first class right away. So, to clarify...
The concert report is due NEXT WEEK. If you have not already attended your concert you should do so as soon as you possibly can. It is not a good idea to wait until the very last moment given the number of things that could possibly interfere with your ability to turn the assignment in on time.
Considering the confusion I may have created yesterday I am making a slight change to the deadline. The original deadline was the start of your class on Monday next week, November 23. I have decided to extend the deadline by 24 hours until the start of your class on Tuesday, November 24. [ Discuss] |

Class Location May Be Changed Today
There was some flooding in our classroom over the weekend and crews are working hard this morning to clean it up. They will not be finished in time for the 9:30 class and we are not certain whether or not they will finish in time for the 10:30 class. For this reason...
- The 9:30 class has been moved to room A92 in the A9 building.
- The 10:30 class MAY be moved to A91 if A11 is still unavailable - check at A11 first.
BOTH CLASSES WILL MEET TODAY.
The A9 building is right next to our building and alongside Flint Center.
If you walk out of our classroom and then around the right side of the
A9 building (which will be in front of you) you will find classrooms A91 and A92. [ Discuss] |

Monday Morning Notes 11/16/09
Here are a few notes, updates, and comments about the class as we start week #9:
- I updated the Concert List to include many events through the coming weekend. Don't wait too long - the report is due at the start of class NEXT TUESDAY, November 24.
- If you are concerned about your work on the upcoming Concert Report assignment, please set up an appointment to bring me a draft copy of your report for review this week.
- Grades for homework assignments #3 and #4 have been posted - it may be a day or two before I return them in class.
- As I graded these assignments I encountered a few groups of papers with unacceptable similarities. When this happens I am unable to assess the work of those turning in the assignments - I don't know who did what! - and the group of papers will receive failing grades.
- A few people wrote notes on their papers stating that they didn't understand the questions. When this happens you should email me or talk to me and ask for clarification before the assignment is due
- Remember that the schedule for quizzes has been shifted a bit this week. This week's quiz may be on Tuesday or Wednesday. (It is likely that next week's quiz will also be delayed by one day.)
- No other assignment deadlines have been changed.

About Our Schedule
To make it short and sweet: We are pressed for time!
We are perhaps a day or two behind schedule at this point, and upcoming holidays create some additional pressure. With this in mind, I will do a few things during the remaining weeks of the term in order to keep us moving along and to adapt to the situation:
- Some things will be delayed slightly. For example next week's quiz will not be on Monday - I'm aiming for Tuesday at this point.
- I will provide minimum coverage of certain assigned subjects in class and you will rely more on textbook study regarding these topics.
How many weeks remain? Three weeks - one of which includes the Thanksgiving holiday - plus finals week. [ Discuss] |

Test 2 Info
As you know, test #2 is tomorrow - Wednesday, November 11. As per the course calendar, the focus of this test is on the units/lectures on Baroque and Classical era music. The format is essentially the same as that on test 1: a Scantron section and a section where you write on the exam. There may be listening items as well - they will likely ask you to identify the type of piece that you hear. (We did a question like this in class on Monday when we looked at the concerto form.)
