Introduction to Reason. Setting up the empty rack with mixer and redrum. Creating redrum patterns.

Did everything else in Garage Band (except audio recording and editing.) Assignment 1 announced.

Thursday 1/14
More on the redrum. Multiple redrums, adding external samples, copy, randomize, shift, etc. Introduce ways to alter sound resources in Redrum: multiple Redrum modules, reprogramming individual sounds. Some look at the sequencer. Did not make the assignment - need to do that next time, along with providing some time to work on it.

Same a MW class. Announced first assignment and deadline. Provided some work time on project 1 in class today.

Tuesday 9/22
Technical problems with studio! Did not do: Basic Reason intro: the rack, the empty rack, adding the mixer and Subtractor via the Create menu or selecting from preset Subtractor sounds and the concept of editing the Subractor (but only in the most cursory way). Did not play the Subtractor from the keyboard.
Wednesday 19/23
introduced Garage Band: adding regions, looping - showed pan/volume and master volume, edit/solo, etc. Did a quick intro to using keyboard to control sounds. Did not do:  track edit screens, quantize, pitch correction, etc. Still need to look at adding effects to software synth tracks.  Make the Garage Band project assignment and announce due date one week from today. (Some class time will be available next week to work on this.)
Thursday 4/9
Introduced some Subtractor basics - up through oscillator. Probably need to back up and do redrum...

(Did not do: Went over essentially all of the front panel controls of ReDrum for creating and modifying patterns. Also mentioned the overall control from the transport window, and the options available from the popup menu. Did not yet go over how to add patterns to the sequencer, or how to record drum sounds directly into the sequencer with keyboard input.)

Thursday 9/25
Work time on the Redrum module. Went over adding a second redrum, working with the pattern lane, recording Redrum directly into a track. Then we started with the Subtractor: oscillators (waveform and frequency controls), noise generator (color) and the amplitude envelope. Introduced the Redrum assignment. Did initial introduction to the Subtractor module, but did not explain much more than the oscillators and the most basic features of generic ADSR envelopes. (Notes: Contrary to this description we just barely did the pattern lane - need to do this next time. The Subtractor intro was on Tuesday did not yet include anything on actually modifying sounds.)

CURRENT TERM

Monday, 1/16

No class due to MLK holiday

Tuesday, 1/17
Work time on Redrum project that will be due on Thursday. Began coverage of the Subtractor. Offered a basic concept of the modular structure of the instrument; connected it to instruments with a vintage in the 1970-1980s period; provided a default "starting point" setup for the subtractor, Introduced controls for octave, semi, and cent, and how to adjust audio balance between two oscillators. Did not yet do noise..
Wednesday, 1/18
Time to work on Garage Band project - due next Monday, one class later than usual due to Monday holiday this week. Did an overview/intro of Logic - the "tour" of the screen plus a very basic "how to record a keyboard part" demo.

In Logic we had looked at the piano roll and (briefly) the score views at last class. ) In piano roll, looked at basic note editing.

(NO: Used the velocity tool to edit in the piano roll view. In the track window we looked at how to loop using the upper right corner of a region or by enabling the loop check box for a track. Looked at stopping a loop with an empty track.) (Next steps should probably be: apple loops, basic quantization, how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff. Put up a date for assignment 2 on the web site, but did not mention it in class and did not go over project requirements in class. May need to delay deadline - actually, probably need to delay - for #2 by one day from the date listed on the web site.
Thursday, 1/19

Finished subtractor oscillators and noise generator. Introduced waveforms, harmonics, etc. Barely started filters - simply showed the two controls (freq and res) on the filter, gave an example with the LPF. Need to go on to filters in detail and then to ADSRs next time. A bit of work time on Redrum assignment. Heard Redrum. Did not yet set assignment for subtractor. Heard almost all assignment #2 (Redrum) - did not get to last three people in left-most row, and still need to do the "second pass.

Friday, 120
We are a bit ahead of the MW class since there was Monday holiday this week. Work time sufficient to complete the Garage Band assignment. Heard most of these projects with the exception of about 8 students on the left side of the room and those who asked to be heard the second time around.

Did a basic introduction to Logic - enough to begin work on assignment 2, which is due next week as per the schedule. Basic orientation to the Arrange window. Starting a file. Recording. Basic editing. VERY basic intro to quantizing (no explanation - basically where the controls are), very basic intro to looping, selecting instruments, adding Apple loops, the score and piano roll views, adding a track.

Work time on the Garage Band assignment which is due on Wednesday.  (Will allow about 15 minutes GB work time at beginning of Wednesday class.) Did very basic introduction to Logic - the Arrange and Transport windows. How to select a sound for a software instrument track. (DID NOT: Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin, repeating a region by looping, very basic software instrument editing in the piano roll, where to find the "garage band loops.")

Introduced Subtractor: concept of modular synth; and went over waveforms, and the frequency controls on the oscillators, and the noise generator. Explained harmonic and how they apply to waveforms, and related this to how a string behaves.

Did not get beyond that, so we still have to deal with filter basics next time and also the ADSR control of volume and filtering.

Heard Garage Band Projects, but not all. Started on east side of room and made a complete circuit except for the last two students in front on the west row. At next class - a week from today due to holiday next Monday - need to hear those two projects and any remaining from the "first pass" today.

In Logic we looked at the piano roll and (briefly) the score views. Used the pencil tool to create a new region in a track. Used the velocity tool to edit in the piano roll view. In piano roll, looked at basic note editing. In the track window we looked at how to loop using the upper right corner of a region or by enabling the loop check box for a track. Looked at stopping a loop with an empty track.

(Next steps should probably be: apple loops, basic quantization, how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff. Put up a date for assignment 2 on the web site, but did not mention it in class and did not go over project requirements in class. May need to delay deadline - actually, probably need to delay - for #2 by one day from the date listed on the web site.

More basic editing on the Subtractor: finished filter basics. Next time go over ADSR concepts, and apply the ADSR to both volume and filter.) frequency. Reviewed harmonics and how to calculate them for different basic waveforms.

Essentially the same as MW class, though we took a brief look at very basic quantizing - not enough to say that the subject has been covered.. Friday class was introduced to Logic as the MW class - the arrange window, selecting instruments, recording, some basic editing in the arrange window and the piano roll, adding tracks, importance of click track. Mentioned that assignment 2 will be near the end of the period week. Next week: need to give sufficient time to do the project since there was NO time to work on it today..WHAT WE DID NOT DO - did not introduce use of audio loops - e.g. Apple loops. (DETAILS TBA)


FALL 2010

After about 1:25, some more work time on the Redrum assignment that is due on Thursday - will allow a small amount of time to finish this on Thursday, but those needed substantial time were directed to use open lab. Introduced Subtractor: concept of modular synth; basic settings to get sound (envelopes and filters); changing octave, semi, and cent; basic waveforms; filter basics; adding a second oscillator and noise generator. (Next time need to move to ADSR control of the filter.)

Some more work time on the Redrum assignment that is due on Thursday - will allow a small amount of time to finish this on Thursday, but those needed substantial time were directed to use open lab. Introduced Subtractor: concept of modular synth; basic settings to get sound (envelopes and filters); changing octave, semi, and cent; basic waveforms; harmonic structure; adding a second oscillator and noise generator. (Next time need to move to filters.)
Wednesday, 1/13
Heard Garage Band Projects - which took longer than usual due to larger class. A few who did not play theirs because they were not finished were told that they must tell me when they are done if they want me to hear it. Moved briefly back to Logic and looked at some basic quantizing issues. Assigned #2 and gave due date at end of next Wednesday's class - no class on Monday due to holiday. Next steps should probably be: how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff. (Given the Monday holiday there will be a time issue next week. On one hand we need to try to stay on track to hear the Logic assignment, but on the other hand we don't want to get too far behind the schedule due to the holiday.)

COURSE CORRECTION! I started with Subtractor last time (just looked at oscillators and noise generator) when I should have started with Redrum. So... Today I suspended coverage of the Subtractor and instead introduced the Redrum. Pretty much finished it and made the first Redrum assignment due one week from today on Tuesday, October 6.

(OLD: Work time on the ReDrum assignment that is due on Thursday. Some students appear to have finished, but more seem like they'll need at least a half hour to complete projects on Thursday. (Also a very basic intro to Subtractor module: reviewed Oscillator and Noise generator and controls of waveform and frequency. Next time continue on to filters, ADSRs, etc.))
Wednesday, 9/30
Moved on into Logic, looking at basic plugin synths and then loops - essentially a quick tour of how to access all of them, but without details of each synthesis method. Learned how to change the inst assigned to the inst tracks. (DID NOT: Went over a model set of steps for recording: first drums, check for timing, ) add another track, add loops, etc. Hear Garage Band assignments next week since we were delayed on the first day of class by technical issues. (For next time - how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff.

Mentioned that assignment 2 will be due at end of the period next week, though this may be a bit aggressive. (But may have to do it due to later friday holidays.) Elements of the project that I did  NOT cover include a) spreading a percussion part across multiple tracks and b) adding audio loops. Must do these at start of period.

Briefly discussed issues with audio peaks and some very basic ways to deal with them. Did a very basic introduction to quantizing in Logic, showing only how to quantize a region - did not quantize individual notes, and only offered the basic "try this first" approach to selecting quantize values. Demonstrated how to find and add Apple Loops to Logic Projects (for assignment #2).

(May still want to do: All filled in a few details about various controls that we had not already covered in the subtractor: pitch bend, modulation, portamento, the velocity controls, etc.) Need to distribute the harmonics/sidebands quiz, perhaps as two separate quizzes.

Same as MW class but possibly a bit ahead of them. Still need to explain using the file server and start automation. Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias. (If time, show - but do not explain in detail - the automation for volume/pan.) Heard assignment 2 with the exception of perhaps a half dozen who I'll hear at the start of the next class.

Monday 10/6
Finished listening to the last batch of Garage Band projects. Introduced the use of the audio tracks and how to bring in regions from the Loop Browser. Introduced simple quantizing. Also introduced methods for backing up files to USB memory stick and server. Described assignment #2 and announced the due date as next Monday at the start of class.
Tuesday 10/7

Finished the main features of the Subtractor including ADSR control of filters and use of LFO. Did not ntroduce frequency modulation between two audio oscillators. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 10/8
Most of period was work time on project 2. Briefly demoed the very basic interface to track automation and briefly described how to make duplicate tracks that use the same instruments. Next time (Monday): hear assignment 2, review/introduce techniques for project 3, perhaps do first topic if time.
Thursday 10/9
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at next class) Take a quick look at some remaining "minor" controls on the subtractor: portamento, the mod envelope, the second filter and interconnecting the filters, and the velocity controllers at the bottom right. - WILL HEAR ASSIGNMENT 3 AT START OF NEXT CLASS.
Friday 10/10
Introduce the use of "apple loops" on the audio tracks; several ways to repeat them, particularly the use of "loop" features. Demonstrate how to back up files to the server. (Should review this next week.) Do the first electronic music history topic and assign the first quiz as due next Friday. Introduced basic automation in the arrange window. Reminded of the differences and incompatablities beween audio and software instrument tracks. DID NOT PLAY BACK ASSIGNMENT 2 - IT IS NOW DUE AT THE START OF CLASS ON OCT 17.

Introduced Reason effects and how to wire them to individual instruments and to the mixer. Announced due dates for the two quizzes, and the cancellation of this Thursday's class for a music department flex day. The Subtractor assignment is supposed to be due today, but not everyone is finished - heard perhaps a half dozen of them, and announced that I would hear the rest at the start of the next meeting.

Did a _very_ basic introduction to how automation is displayed and entered in Logic - just enough to get people started on it.

Next time do the Theremin and talk about assigning and scheduling takehome quizzes and tests. #3 is due - supposedly - 30 minutes into the period next time.

Friday 4/30

We had serious attendance problems today. Only eight students were present at the start of the period, and about 4-5 came in late - some more than one hour late. Had a serious discussion about this issue with the class and emailed all absent students and asked for a response from each of them. Moving on...

Introduced Logic Automation. Automated volume and panning, and explained how other parameter could be automated, even individual instrument and plugin parameters. (The latter discussed conceptually, but don't expect that students will do this just yet.) Introduced logic plugin effects.

Hear assignment 3 at end of class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic and take-home quiz next week!)

Friday 4/30

We had serious attendance problems today. Only eight students were present at the start of the period, and about 4-5 came in late - some more than one hour late. Had a serious discussion about this issue with the class and emailed all absent students and asked for a response from each of them. Moving on...

Introduced Logic Automation. Automated volume and panning, and explained how other parameter could be automated, even individual instrument and plugin parameters. (The latter discussed conceptually, but don't expect that students will do this just yet.) Introduced logic plugin effects.

Hear assignment 3 at end of class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic and take-home quiz next week!)

A bit of a complicated day. Hear all of assignment 2 during first part of period. Introduced basic automation in the Arrange window. Did first electronic history project. Quiz 1 due at start of next class. Some time was available for work on project 3 - which had been due at this session but I had to delay deadline now until start of next class. Need to try to keep on track for assignment four - which was not yet assigned - since we'll have a Friday holiday the following week.

Covered the CV, gate, and curve values and patched curves to filter frequency. (At some point need to move on to the splitter/merger module. But next step - before that - is likely to introduce the samplers.)

We had serious attendance problems today. Only eight students were present at the start of the period, and about 4-5 came in late - some more than one hour late. Had a serious discussion about this issue with the class and emailed all absent students and asked for a response from each of them. Moving on...

Introduced Logic Automation. Automated volume and panning, and explained how other parameter could be automated, even individual instrument and plugin parameters. (The latter discussed conceptually, but don't expect that students will do this just yet.) Introduced logic plugin effects.

Hear assignment 3 at end of class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic and take-home quiz next week!)

Was scheduled to hear most recent project (#2), but put this off until start of next class. Discussed the need to get back on track and finish assignments on schedule. A bit of a complicated day. Hear all of assignment 2 during first part of period. Introduced basic automation in the Arrange window. Did first electronic history project. Quiz 1 due at start of next class. Some time was available for work on project 3 - which had been due at this session but I had to delay deadline now until start of next class. Need to try to keep on track for assignment four - which was not yet assigned - since we'll have a Friday holiday the following week.

Need to introduce effects/inserts on 1/5.

General Notes for Week 4
  • This week in all classes we need to go over how to back up to the server. Need to start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz. Quiz on FM for Music 8? Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.

  • Also - did not explain the "Logic Basics" instrument business in the Friday class (or the MW class) last week. Need to go over that and incorporate it into assignment 3.

DID NOT start new history topic for quiz 2, which would have been due next Friday - will need to delay by one week, and think about how this does or does not affect test schedule. IMPORTANT: I heard assignment 3 from many students but not all - need to hear remaining assignments next time. Also, did not go on to project 4 information or to the second quiz presentation.

Monday 2/6
Work time on #3. Introduced effects inserts in Logic. Then...

Realized that most would not finish #3 today, so moved ahead to do first electronic history presentation. Assigned quiz due date as one week from today. Regarding assignment #3... will need to provide perhaps another 30 minutes of work time on Wednesday, then listen to them. Need to announce and describe #4 and set deadline.
Tuesday 2/7

Collected and reviewed take home quiz 1 on harmonics. Heard assignment #3, the subtractor assignment - which took longer than I expected. (Modification to the assignment for the future might include requiring students to work from init patch on all or some instruments, submit written descriptions of all parameters that they changed, ask them to account for a subset of adjustments whether or not they changed them, etc. - the issue is that a number of them submitted fairly interesting sounds, but they produced them by making very minor changes to preexisting sounds and they did not understand why the sounds worked as they did.) At the end of the period, considered introducing the Matrix sequencer, but there was too little time. Perhaps need to introduce the "velocity" section of the subtractor, at least to demonstrate the concept of having velocity scale the effect of other controls.

Ended class a few minutes early today. 30 minutes work time on #3, then room circuit to hear this assignment. Went over requirement for #4 and announced due date. Because we are a bit behind on #3: last part of period was final in-class time for working on #3. Class knows that if they are not done today they must come to Tuesday class tomorrow to finish. Returned quiz 1 and assigned quiz 2 as due one week from today. Much of the remainder of the period was work time on the next assignment that is due Thursday - the "two racks" assignment with effects.

Introduced process of creating pitched sample instruments in Logic. Imported individual pitched samples into the NN19 and went through the process to ensure accurate mapping to the keyboard. Did a quick explanation of how to do splits and then how to do layers on the NN-XT. Heard the "two racks" assignment at the end of the period as students worked on next assignment - BUT ONLY HEARD ABOUT HALF OF THEM - NEED TO HEAR THE REST NEXT TIME. Some work time on 5 near end of period.
At some point probably need to go over the process of using Logic as an audio editor for samples, but need to check ahead on assignments to see where this is most appropriate. Also week 6 might be a good time to mention the presentation assignment in a general way, though this could also wait for perhaps either the end of the week or early the following week.

Announced #4 as due at end of period next time, but this is probably unrealistic, given that most didn't finish #3 until end of period today - will likely need to announce at start of period that it won't be due until Wednesday. (Sigh... :-) Also, told class that any who were not ready to play back #3 today must tell me when they are finished, as I will not be listening to them as part of regular class activities otherwise.

Busy day...

Presented second electronic music topic and assigned quiz 2 as due at start of next class. Also announced that test 1 will be scheduled for end of next class meeting (need to grade quizzes during that class), and that the following Friday will be a holiday.

Introduced basics about editing sounds on the ES1 subtractive synth so that some can start on #5. We should try to have #5 finished at the end of next class, but will no doubt have to accommodate a few who may not have it completed.

Heard remaining #3 and a very few #4 by the end of the period. Almost all students said they were nearly done with #4, so we agreed that I would hear it perhaps 15 minutes after going over quiz 2 next week. (Week 6 session will be "high pressure," as we discussed today, since we need to attempt to finish #5 before we miss class the following week for a holiday.)

(Fall 2010 term, started this last week - one week earlier due to extra winter 2010 holidays and need to move faster to accommodate them.) Announced take-home quiz due next Friday at start of class. #4 is due next week, but many may need the whole period to work on it. Some still did not play #3, and I said I would hear them near the start of the class next week.

Went over using thumb drives for backup and moving files. Introduce methods for editing logic basics instruments so that #5 can start with an optimistic goal of finishing by end of period next week. (By the end of the period today it became clear that this goal would be too optimistic - probably need to actually hear it at the next session after that... and reevaluate the calendar as a whole with a plan that will get through all topics, quizzes, projects, with time left for final projects.)

(likely will finish introducing necessary topics next week, provide work time next week, and have assignment due at the following session (week 7).

Issue: We're getting behind - not your fault, but the issue is our compressed schedule. Not all are done with 3 today, so best objective is to have everyone finish 4 next week - but we'll still be behind. In the end this could leave us with insufficient time for final projects - not a good thing!

Introduce the addition of effects inserts in the Logic mixer. Went over how to add, bypass, and select specific presets, how to view on mixer or in arrange window. Then DID NOT hear #3. Too many were too far from being done - or else I had previously confused the class about the deadline. We had a talk about the importance of "getting it done first and making it better later." Deadline for #3 extended to START of Wednesday class, and informed class that they must use open lab if they were not finished at end of today's session.

SPRING 2009: What we really did! Reviewed quiz 1, which was due in class today. We are slightly behind, but there is time to catch up. Did a brief introduction to using the Matrix Pattern Sequencer with the Subtractor, including the use of gate and curve CV. Did not do the split/merge module - save for later. Next need to introduce the samplers, starting with the simpler of the two. Note that next assignment is due Tuesday and that project 1 is due next week. Reviewed project 1 requirements earlier this week.

Still need to do the take-home quiz on modulation, etc.

Covered all three aspects in at least a basic way: connecting mixer audio from Reason into Logic Mixer, connecting individual instrument to Logic Mixer, and creating external MIDI tracks in Logic. Because of this, did not hear #5 at end of period. Will do this at start of class on Tuesday.
Friday 2/11

After hearing the last of #4 we had some work time on project 5 which is now due at the END of the period next class. Introduced the use of the NN19, both to bring in pre-set sample instruments and to build an instrument from individual samples. Still did not assign the quiz! Need to do that and perhaps demo the NN-XT next time - though one or both could wait a session if time is needed for work on #5.  (Save for later:  basic introduction to Rewire -  stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then  individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)

Project 6 is next week - maybe... I did not announce it or go over required techniques yet. Need to do this next week on Tuesday. (STILL NEED TO DO THE QUIZ.) DID: introduce the NN-XT. How to do layers, including velocity layers. Heard #5 from most students but a few need to be checked next Tuesday. Introduced the CV Splitter/merger, mostly in the context of splitting. Very briefly pointed out the existence of the audio equivalent module. Only checked a couple #1 assignments. Need to follow up on this next time.

(For assign 6 which will likely be due not next week but the following class session.) Did EM topic two and assigned quiz. Need to introduce the basic workflow of bringing audio into Logic for editing, saving edited samples, and then importing into Reason instruments - as used in assignment 7. Also update on the due date for the presentation proposals - perhaps hear from students on their "ideas in progress" at the next session.

Reviewed Quiz 2 and reminded the class that test 1 is next Monday. Heard remaining projects 4 - only a few individuals may not have played/shown it, and they need to let me know when it is finished. Signed everyone up for sampleswap; downloaded a drum loop; imported it into an audio track in Logic. Went over how to synchronize the tempo of a single loop and the Logic sequence by CHANGING THE LOGIC TEMPO. Did not yet do the audio editor or pitch/time machine or other factory options.

Next time: Start period with more on audio editing as pertaining to the use of samples in Logic. Then, at about 1:10, hand out the test. As people finish the test, hear assignment 5. (This was all announced at today's class.)

Friday 11/18
Fast day - due to surrounding holidays! Heard a few remaining assignment #4. Introduced all of the topic of audio in Logic - except the time/pitch machine. (Did do the functions menu.) Determined that quiz 4 will be due at next session and quiz three at the session after that - did not want to take more lab time for presenting topics this week, so will present the history topic at the next class. Quiz 4 is due a half hour into the period next time - so students who need a half hour to work with the Logic app to answer questions may do so. Announced that assignment #6 is due next class, but there was very little time to work on it - balancing need to have time to finish it with need to have time to work on final project, will determine exactly when to hear it during the next class meeting. Reviewed remaining schedule for the term.

(Admin eval took place during first two hours of class. 23 students were present. Most of the observed portion of the class was the lecture/demonstration on obtaining audio samples from sampleswap.org, basic copyright issues around sampling, how to organize sounds in folders, importing audio into Logic, synchronizing different tempo/rhythm samples, basic sample editor techniques. A portion of the observed session also included - some integrated into the "lecture" and some separate - student lab work with the techniques, followed by additional time to apply the techniques, during which I worked one on one with several students and shared some questions and answers with the group.)

Probably also time to go over the schedule for the remainder of the term.

Posted the presentation schedule and explained how critical it is to be ready to present on the assigned day - and that there may not be a second chance for students who are not ready when assigned. Did one circuit of the room to hear #6. Only a small percentage had completed it successfully - quite a few thought thought they were done but had forgotten something. Plan to remind them at the next session that I will make one final circuit at the end of the May 31 class. May need to allow for completion of #7 either on June 2 (original date) or one session later. Reviewed the calendar for the rest of the term.

Heard #6 from perhaps half of students in attendance. Announced that others are expected to have them ready for playback no later than 15 minutes into the next class. Reminded class that presentation proposals are due one week from today. Reminded class that Logic/Reason are automatically rewired when doing #7, so it will be necessary to assign an audio track (or tracks) in Logic to the reason NNXT and NN19 playing the samples as the sample instruments are created and edited. Reminded class to find and bring audio samples for assignment #7. Discussed some issues with "hot" volume levels in the Logic mixer: setting levels above 0.0 unnecessarily, turning things up where turning other things down would be a better solution, need to disable or automate the outputs of effects.
Wednesday 2/23
Started with reminders about a few upcoming things: assignment #5 due later today, assignment #6 in one week, the rough outline of the plan for quizzes and one more test, beginning to think about the final project. This was followed by work time to finish assignment #5 and time to start #6. Quick overview of the Media:Bin and of bouncing. Heard #5 during latter part of the period - from all but perhaps a tiny handful of remaining students - ask at the next session who still needs to play it back.

Next time I should still go over the exact process for synchronizing two audio samples with different tempi.

Introduced more audio editing techniques: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse. Looked at changing sample length using the Time/Pitch Machine, and by using the automatic feature to match to nearest bar or to markers.

Ironically, while the Friday class is now going to have to work hard to finish all work this term, the MW class is probably a bit ahead of schedule...

Work time on #6 which was due today but which I will instead hear at start of session on Thursday. Did a lot of individual troubleshooting on this project today. (Attendance was poor today!) Described final project and explained time line. (There was a question about the quiz we have not yet had.)

Work time on #6. Though I had originally (and optimistically) thought that it would be done today, now we'll hear it at start of class on Monday. Also announced TEST for next Monday. Explained how to bounce to MP3. Explained how to deconstruct a large sample (e.g. - a piece of music) into separate samples, import and beat match them.

Also on Monday, need to introduce Final Project and prepare for one more history session either next Wednesday (best) or the following Monday.
Thursday 11/12
Did the class survey of "what will your presentation topic be?" with feedback. Heard remaining project 6A. Explained the most basic techniques needed for assignment 7 (e.g. excerpt small sound in Logic) - might want to look briefly at some other editing, etc. possibilities next time (e.g. - pitch mapping, edits in the sampler, overview of changes in Logic such as fades, etc.).

Assignment 7 is due on 11/19. Revisions to proposals due on 11/17. Need to post presentation schedule on 11/17 at end of period and then review final project guidelines again.

Introduced audio sampling issues. Importing audio files into Logic audio tracks. Synchronizing them to the project by alterning project tempo and/or using Time/Pitch machine. Went over basic "functions" in T/P Machine. Signed up for SampleSwap and downloaded samples.

Did NOT hear assignment 5 since 1/3 of class not yet finished. Announced: 1. #5 due at START of class on Wednesay, Wednesday a work day on #6, #6 due next Monday.

It turned out that only a couple students had finished 6a, so I delayed the deadline to THE START OF CLASS ON THURSDAY with no option for delay. (Some students can play #6 at the same time.) After that on Thursday we will look at how to create, edit, and use samples to build instruments in the NN19 from our own samples.

Heard most of the remaining assignment 5 examples. Used much of period for work on assignment 6, after explaining the basics of importing, beat matching, etc. samples in Logic. Returned test #1 and quick reviewed the answers. Announced the reversal of quizzes #3 and #4 and announced that #4 is due next week. Assignment #6 will be due next time, but it is likely that very few will be ready when class starts.

Need to do the remain EM history topic next week and assign quiz, announce final project, and announce remaining test and schedule.

Heard remaining assignment 5 examples. Used most of period for work on assignment 6. It appears that almost everyone has finished it - announced that I'll hear it at start of period next time. Did final EM history presentation and assigned quiz 3 for next Friday. Discussed the fact that we have only two more class meetings - and outlined the plan for the remaining sessions.

(Finished assignment 5 but did not hear it - will hear this project as the start of the period next week. Did cover the import and basic editing of audio samples including beat matching. Had some work time on #6 - which is now due at the end of the period next week. Did basic em history on RCA, Moog, and Buchla - need to play examples next week.)

Went over remaining schedule: this class, two weeks from today (last regular class), then final exam session. Quizzes 3 and 4 due at start of period next week. We'll do test 2 at end of final exam session. Next session devoted almost entirely to work on final project - exception being quiz review. Did third EM history topic.

Heard all pre-6 assignments but decided to NOT hear #6 today so that no time would be taken away from getting started on the final project. MUST hear #6 at the final class session in two weeks! Also at that session, probably give people about 15 minutes at the start of the period in case they need to use the Logic program to review material for quiz 4 questions.
