selecting from preset Subtractor sounds and the concept of editing the
Subractor (but only in the most cursory way). Did not play the
Subtractor from the keyboard. Wednesday 19/23
introduced
Garage Band: adding regions, looping - showed pan/volume and master
volume, edit/solo, etc. Did a quick intro to using keyboard to control
sounds. Did not do: track edit screens, quantize, pitch
correction, etc. Still need to look at adding effects to software synth
tracks. Make the Garage Band project assignment and announce due date
one week from today. (Some class time will be available next week to
work on this.) Thursday 4/9
Introduced some Subtractor basics - up through oscillator. Probably need to back up and do redrum...
OLD:
Introduced Redrum basics. Work time on the Redrum module. Need to go
over adding a second redrum, working with the pattern lane, recording
Redrum directly into a track. Introduced the Redrum assignment. Friday 4/10

Same a MW class but did explain the mute/solo/etc controls or the drop-down volume and pan controls. Announced first assignment and deadline.
Monday 9/22
Did the usual
getting-started stuff: quick review of greensheet, web site sign ups,
etc. Then introduced Garage Band: adding regions, looping. Did not do: recording from keyboard and copying, etc. Tuesday 9/23
Basic
Reason intro: the rack, the empty rack, adding the mixer and Subtractor
via the Create menu. Went over selecting from present Subtractor
sounds. Played the Subtractor from the keyboard. (Did not do: Went over essentially all
of the front panel controls of ReDrum for creating and modifying
patterns. Also mentioned the overall control from the transport window,
and the options available from the popup menu. Did not yet go over how
to add patterns to the sequencer, or how to record drum sounds directly
into the sequencer with keyboard input.) Wednesday 9/24
Completed
Garage Band intro including editing, effects, panning/volume, etc. More
Garage Band including how to record music played from the keyboard, a
quick look at the editing window, and a quick look at adding effects to
software synth tracks. Explained the mute/solo/etc controls or the
drop-down volume and pan controls. Make the Garage Band project
assignment and announce due date one week from today. (Some class time
will be available next week to work on this.) Thursday 9/25
Work
time on the Redrum module. Went over adding a second redrum, working
with the pattern lane, recording Redrum directly into a track. Then we
started with the Subtractor: oscillators (waveform and frequency
controls), noise generator (color) and the amplitude envelope.
Introduced the Redrum assignment. Did initial introduction to the
Subtractor module, but did not explain much more than the oscillators
and the most basic features of generic ADSR envelopes. (Notes: Contrary
to this description we just barely did the pattern lane - need
to do this next time. The Subtractor intro was on Tuesday did not yet
include anything on actually modifying sounds.) Friday 9/26
Same a MW class but did explain the mute/solo/etc controls or the drop-down volume and pan controls. Announced first assignment and deadline.

CURRENT TERM
Monday, 1/16
No class due to MLK holiday
Tuesday, 1/17
Work time on Redrum project that will be due on Thursday. Began coverage of the Subtractor. Offered a basic concept of the modular structure of the instrument; connected it to instruments with a vintage in the 1970-1980s period; provided a default "starting point" setup for the subtractor, Introduced controls for octave, semi, and cent, and how to adjust audio balance between two oscillators. Did not yet do noise..
Wednesday, 1/18
Time to work on Garage Band project - due next Monday, one class later than usual due to Monday holiday this week. Did an overview/intro of Logic - the "tour" of the screen plus a very basic "how to record a keyboard part" demo.
In Logic we had looked at the piano roll and (briefly) the score views at last class. ) In piano roll, looked at basic note editing.
(NO: Used the velocity tool to edit in the piano roll view. In the track window we looked at how to loop using the upper right corner of a region or by enabling the loop check box for a track. Looked at stopping a loop with an empty track.) (Next steps should probably be: apple loops, basic quantization, how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff. Put up a date for assignment 2 on the web site, but did not mention it in class and did not go over project requirements in class. May need to delay deadline - actually, probably need to delay - for #2 by one day from the date listed on the web site.
Thursday, 1/19
Finished subtractor oscillators and noise generator. Introduced waveforms, harmonics, etc. Barely started filters - simply showed the two controls (freq and res) on the filter, gave an example with the LPF. Need to go on to filters in detail and then to ADSRs next time. A bit of work time on Redrum assignment. Heard Redrum. Did not yet set assignment for subtractor. Heard almost all assignment #2 (Redrum) - did not get to last three people in left-most row, and still need to do the "second pass.
Friday, 120
We are a bit ahead of the MW class since there was Monday holiday this week. Work time sufficient to complete the Garage Band assignment. Heard most of these projects with the exception of about 8 students on the left side of the room and those who asked to be heard the second time around.
Did a basic introduction to Logic - enough to begin work on assignment 2, which is due next week as per the schedule. Basic orientation to the Arrange window. Starting a file. Recording. Basic editing. VERY basic intro to quantizing (no explanation - basically where the controls are), very basic intro to looping, selecting instruments, adding Apple loops, the score and piano roll views, adding a track.

2011 WinterMonday, 4/11
(Finished
GB intro and made
assignment 1 at previous class.) Work time on the Garage Band assignment
which is due on Wednesday. (Will allow about 15 minutes GB work time
at beginning of Wednesday class.) Did very basic introduction to Logic -
the
Arrange and Transport windows. How to select a sound for a software
instrument track.
(DID NOT: Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin,
repeating a region by looping, very basic software instrument editing in
the piano roll, where to find the "garage band loops.")
Tuesday, 4/12
Introduce
ways to alter sound resources in Redrum: multiple Redrum modules,
reprogramming individual sounds. Work time on the Redrum assignment that
is due on Thursday - will allow at least 30 minutes to finish this on
Thursday. Introduced Subtractor: concept of modular synth; and went over
waveforms, and the frequency controls on the oscillators, and the noise
generator. Explained harmonic and how they apply to waveforms, and
related this to how a string behaves.
Did not get beyond that, so
we still have to deal with filter basics next time and also the ADSR
control of volume and filtering.
Wednesday, 4/13
Heard
Garage Band Projects, but not all. Started on east side of room and
made a complete circuit except for the last two students in front on the
west row. At next class - a week from today due to holiday next Monday -
need to hear those two projects and any remaining from the "first pass"
today.
In Logic we looked at the piano roll and (briefly) the
score views. Used the pencil tool to create a new region in a track.
Used the velocity tool to edit in the piano roll view. In piano roll,
looked at basic note editing. In the track window we looked at how to
loop using the upper right corner of a region or by enabling the loop
check box for a track. Looked at stopping a loop with an empty track.

Thursday, 4/14
More
basic
editing on the Subtractor: finished filter basics. Next time go over
ADSR
concepts, and apply the ADSR to both volume and filter.) frequency.
Reviewed harmonics and how to calculate them for different basic
waveforms. Heard
assignment 2 (Redrum) except for those who were not ready on the first
pass - need to hear them next time. Need to consider the assignment date
for the first take-home quiz on harmonics.) (Next: LFO 2 and LFO 1, the second filter, announce
the due date for the Subtractor assignment during Tuesday class, and
move on to more Subtractor stuff. Important to cover the frequency
content of waveforms - perhaps at start of Tuesday class and with some
interval before trying to do the FM synthesis stuff.)
Friday, 4/15
None this quarter Monday, 1/10
(Finished GB intro and made
assignment 1 at previous class.) Work time on the Garage Band assignment which is due on Wednesday. (Will allow about 15 minutes GB work time at beginning of Wednesday class.) Did very basic introduction to Logic - the

Friday, 1/14
Essentially the same as MW class, though we took a brief look at very basic quantizing - not enough to say that the subject has been covered.. Friday class was introduced to Logic as the MW class -
the arrange window, selecting instruments, recording, some basic
editing in the arrange window and the piano roll, adding tracks,
importance of click track. Mentioned that assignment 2 will be near the end of the period week. Next week: need to give sufficient time to do the project since there was NO time to work on it today..WHAT WE DID NOT DO - did not introduce use of audio loops - e.g. Apple loops. (DETAILS TBA)
FALL 2010
Monday, 9/27
(Finished

which is due on Wednesday. Did very basic introduction to Logic - the
Arrange and Transport windows. How to assign a plugin to an INST track.
Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin, repeating a region
by looping, very basic software instrument editing in the piano roll.
(Did not point out where to find the "garage band loops.")
Tuesday, 9/28
After
about 1:25, some more work time on the Redrum assignment that is due on
Thursday - will allow a small amount of time to finish this on
Thursday, but those needed substantial time were directed to use open
lab. Introduced Subtractor: concept of modular synth; basic settings to
get sound (envelopes and filters); changing octave, semi, and cent;
basic waveforms; filter basics; adding a second oscillator and noise
generator. (Next time need to move to ADSR control of the filter.) Wednesday, 9/29
Heard
Garage Band Projects - but not all. At start of period need to hear
some in first two rows by door and then hear those who "took a pass" the
first time. (Moved briefly back to Logic and looked at some basic
quantizing issues. Next steps should probably be: how to spread an
instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff. MUST
ASSIGN #2!) WHAT WE DID NOT DO - did not
introduce use of audio loops - e.g. Apple loops Thursday, 9/30
More
basic
editing on the Subtractor: finished the filter, went over ADSR
concepts, and applied the ADSR to both volume and filter frequency. Went
over LFO 2 quite thoroughly. Barely began LFO 1 - mainly took a quick
look at the different waveform options.
Need
to announce the due date for the next assignment during Tuesday class,
and move on to more Subtractor stuff. Important to cover the frequency
content of waveforms - perhaps at start of Tuesday class and with some

WINTER 2010
Monday, 1/11
Finished
GB intro. Make
assignment 1. Work time on the Garage Band assignment which is due on
Monday at start of period . (Very basic introduction to Logic - the
Arrange and Transport windows. How to assign a plugin to an INST track.
Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin. Pointed out where
to find the "garage band loops.") Tuesday, 1/12

1/13
Heard Garage Band Projects - which took longer than usual
due to larger class. A few who did not play theirs because they were
not finished were told that they must tell me when they are done if they
want me to hear it. Moved briefly back to Logic and looked at some
basic quantizing issues. Assigned #2 and gave due date at end of next
Wednesday's class - no class on Monday due to holiday. Next steps should
probably be: how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc.
and much more Logic stuff. (Given the Monday holiday there will be a
time issue next week. On one hand we need to try to stay on track to
hear the Logic assignment, but on the other hand we don't want to get
too far behind the schedule due to the holiday.)
Thursday, 1/14
More
basic editing on the Subtractor: finished the filter, went over ADSR
concepts, and applied the ADSR to both volume and filter frequency.
Announced
the assignment #1 business - previous music
51 students say "I was in music 51" and new students show me a project
in week 6.
Tuesday: need perhaps 30 minutes work time on #2?
Friday, 1/15

Arrange and Transport windows. How to assign a plugin to an INST track.
Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin.)
Tuesday, 9/29
COURSE
CORRECTION! I started with Subtractor last time (just looked at
oscillators and noise generator) when I should have started with
Redrum. So... Today I suspended coverage of the Subtractor and instead
introduced the Redrum. Pretty much finished it and made the first
Redrum assignment due one week from today on Tuesday, October 6.
(OLD:
Work time on the ReDrum assignment that is due on Thursday. Some
students appear to have finished, but more seem like they'll need at
least a half hour to complete projects on Thursday. (Also a very basic
intro to Subtractor module: reviewed Oscillator and Noise generator and
controls of waveform and frequency. Next time continue on to filters,
ADSRs, etc.))
Wednesday, 9/30
Moved
on into Logic, looking at basic plugin synths and then loops -
essentially a quick tour of how to access all of them, but without
details of each synthesis method. Learned how to change the inst
assigned to the inst tracks. (DID NOT: Went over a model set of steps
for recording: first drums, check for timing, ) add another track, add
loops, etc. Hear Garage Band assignments next week since we were
delayed on the first day of class by technical issues. (For next time - how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff.
Thursday, 10/1
More
basic editing on the Subtractor: finished the filter, went over ADSR
concepts, and applied the ADSR to both volume and filter frequency.
(Due to confusion about the need to enter Redrum patterns in the a
pattern lane in the sequencer - half the class didn't do this - the
deadline for this assignment was delayed until NEXT TUESDAY AT START OF
PERIOD.)
Announced the assignment #1 business - previous music
51 students say "I was in music 51" and new students show me a project
in week 6.
Tuesday: need perhaps 30 minutes work time on #2?
Friday, 10/2
(Almost
the s)ame as MW class. Actually both classes are a bit behind the
planned schedule, though this is a more significant issue with the
Friday class. Friday class was introduced to Logic as the MW class -
the arrange window, selecting instruments, recording, some basic
editing in the arrange window and the piano roll, adding tracks,
importance of click track. Mentioned that assignment 2 will be due at
end of the period next week, though this may be a bit aggressive. (But
may have to do it due to later friday holidays.) Elements of the
project that I did NOT cover include a) spreading a percussion part
across multiple tracks and b) adding audio loops. Must do these at
start of period.

Current TermMonday 1/23
Because of last week's Monday holiday, this class is a bit behind the Friday class. Additional Logic basics today - very basic use of quantizing. how to use apple loops in Logic. Did the first pass hearing assignment #1. Need to hear remained assignment 1 work at next class.
Next time: go over the requirements for assignment 2 and announce deadline
Tuesday 1/24 Continued with the subtractor. Finished coverage of filters: types, resonance, etc. Covered ADSR modules for volume and for filter. Mentioned the keyboard knob on the filter. Announced assignment 3. Heard a few remaining assignment 2. Work time on Subtractor and and assignment 3.
Wednesday 1/25
Introduced three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that assignment #2 is due soon. Heard all remaining assignment 1.
Work time on project 2. IMPORTANT: DID NOT introduce the technique for splitting a drum part across multiple tracks - though this is required for assignment 3!
(Did NOT DO a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments - ES1, Sampler, Ultrabeat. Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?)
Thursday 1/26
Did the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Introduced sidebands, both with non-harmonic and harmonic oscillator frequencies. (Need to assign the two quizzes on FM and harmonics.)
Friday 1/27
(Did not update this!) Heard remaining Garage Band projects. Work time on #2 with the intention - likely to not be fully realized - of finishing it today. (Explained to class the unavoidable time issue this quarter that forces me to push a bit.) As I write this halfway through the period, it is likely that not all will be ready to play #2 and that I'll need significant time during second half of period to explain concepts for #3.
In fact, hearing #3 near the start of the period next week is the official plan...
Previous Terms2012 Fall
Monday 10/10Heard
remaining GB projects. Introduced splitting drums over multiple tracks
in Logic. Time to work on Logic assignment (#2). Briefly discussed
issues with audio peaks and some very basic ways to deal with them. Did a
very basic introduction to quantizing in Logic, showing only how to
quantize a region - did not quantize individual notes, and only offered
the basic "try this first" approach to selecting quantize values.
Demonstrated how to find and add Apple Loops to Logic Projects (for
assignment #2).
A few GB projects to hear (but no one said they
were done. For any remaining, student will need to ask me to hear it.)
For project 2: Intro loop browser in Logic. Demonstrated how to use
"apple loops" in Logic. Did quantizing basics. Reminded that assignment 2
is due next time and that work time is available during intermediate
class on Tuesday.
Tuesday 10/11 No Music 8 this quarter
Wednesday 10/12Introduced
three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias.
Reminded that assignment #2 is due at next class. There will be about 15
minutes to finish it up on Monday.
Work time on project 2 - which is due at start of next Monday's class.
Did a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments - ES1, Sampler,
Ultrabeat - but only very briefly talked about selecting sounds.
Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?

Tuesday 4/19 Continued
with Subtractor Introduction. Did use of LFO including modulation
of frequency - but not yet of filter, and mix, etc. Next? - FM with two audio oscillators including sidebands, generation of
harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator.
use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres. Hear remaining Redrum assignments. Need to do a quiz on
waveforms, harmonics, FM... Wednesday 4/20Heard
the very few remaining Garage Band projects. Introduced three ways to
re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that
assignment #2 is due during last half of this class though some may not
be ready.
Work time on project 2 - which was due at the end of the period but is
now due at start of next Monday's class. Made brief mention of next
assignment and (only quickly) described how to spread drums across
multiple tracks with the same "inst."
Still need to fully cover the method for spreading a drum part over multiple tracks.
Did NOT: Went over selecting sounds from the "Logic Basics" set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat.
Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?
Thursday 4/21Introduced
the topic of frequency modulation and sidebands, with all the gory
details about calculating sideband frequencies and the rest. Did NOT yet
assign the quiz on the topic - perhaps at the NEXT session? Some work
time on the Subtractor assignment which is due at the end of the next
class meeting. Assigned the first quiz with a due date as listed on the
web site. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) (DID NOT:Did a quick once-over
regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony,
portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. At end of period did a
very basic intro to signal processors and back panel "wiring" in Reason.
We only looked at how to insert one effect module between the
Subtractor and the Mixer.)
Next subject is likely to be signal
processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some
processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead,
and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer
send/receive, etc.

NO CLASS - MLKing Holiday - (Fall 2010: Heard the remaining Garage Band projects. (DID not: Discussed limiting volume to avoid peaks.) Introduced use of Apple loops in Logic. Introduced the methods of spreading a single drum part over multiple tracks using one "instrument." Reviewed "looping" basics - e.g. how to use a blank regions, etc. Assigned #2 as due this coming Monday at start of period. )
Tuesday 1/18Continued with Subtractor Introduction. Concluded use of LFO including modulation of frequency, filter, and mix. Reviewed over the concept of harmonics, from guitar string to the four synthesizer waveforms. Went to FM with two audio oscillators and covered the basics of this including sidebands, generation of harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator. use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres. Announced #3 for end of next period. Need to do a quiz on waveforms, harmonics, FM... Wednesday 1/19
Heard the very few remaining Garage Band projects. Announced assignment #2 as due during last half of next class. Demonstrated how to use "apple loops" in Logic. Went over quantizing in Logic - both to quantize entire regions and to quantize individual notes in the piano roll. Portions of period were work time on project 2 - which is due at the middle of the period on Monday.
Still need to go over the method for spreading a drum part over multiple tracks. Need to do "copy, loop, and alias" session.
Did NOT: Went over selecting sounds from the "Logic Basics" set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat.
Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?
Thursday 1/20
Most of time in the period was work time on the Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today - but a majority of the class had not quite finished, so I'll hear it 15 MINUTES AFTER THE START OF NEXT TUESDAY'S SESSION. Assigned the first quiz with a due date of one week from today. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) Did a quick once-over regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony, portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. Friday 1/21
Heard a few remaining Garage Band assignments. Essentially the same as MW class, but... heard some but not all of assignment #2. Need to hear the remaining #2 projects at the start of the period next week. The period will also need to include work time on #3 - it was assigned this week but there was NO time to work on it. Main new stuff was - Spliting a part across multiple tracks
- Loop, option-drag, and alias, and
- Using apple loops
- Logic Basics instruments (EXS24, ES1, Ultrabeat)
For next time - EM history 1!
- volume/pan automation.
- effects/inserts
- next assignment
- first quiz
Assignment 3 next week - no earlier than middle of period since we had almost no time to work on it this week.

This
is was the "tough sledding" session - going over how FM works when
using two audio oscillators and, in particular, trying to make sense out
of sidebands. We went over how to calculate them in some simple
situations. Most of remaining time in the period was work time on the
Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today.
Heard about half of these assignments and need to hear the remaining
projects at the next class meeting. (May still want to do: All filled in
a few details about various controls that we had not already covered in
the subtractor: pitch bend, modulation, portamento, the velocity
controls, etc.) Need to distribute the harmonics/sidebands quiz, perhaps
as two separate quizzes.
Next

Finished
listening to the last batch of Garage Band projects. Introduced the use
of the audio tracks and how to bring in regions from the Loop Browser.
Introduced simple quantizing. Also introduced methods for backing up
files to USB memory stick and server. Described assignment #2 and
announced the due date as next Monday at the start of class. Tuesday 10/7
Finished

Most
of period was work time on project 2. Briefly demoed the very basic
interface to track automation and briefly described how to make
duplicate tracks that use the same instruments. Next time (Monday):
hear assignment 2, review/introduce techniques for project 3, perhaps
do first topic if time. Thursday 10/9
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at next class) Take
a quick look at some remaining "minor" controls on the subtractor:
portamento, the mod envelope, the second filter and interconnecting the
filters, and the velocity controllers at the bottom right. - WILL HEAR ASSIGNMENT 3 AT START OF NEXT CLASS. Friday 10/10
Introduce
the use of "apple loops" on the audio tracks; several ways to repeat
them, particularly the use of "loop" features. Demonstrate how to back
up files to the server. (Should review this next week.) Do the first
electronic music history topic and assign the first quiz as due next
Friday. Introduced basic automation in the arrange window. Reminded of
the differences and incompatablities beween audio and software
instrument tracks. DID NOT PLAY BACK ASSIGNMENT 2 - IT IS NOW DUE AT

CURRENT TERM (General Notes for Week 4 - This week in
all classes we need to go over how to create backups. Need to
start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz.
(Quiz 1 due in Music 8.) Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER
VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and
panning.)Monday 1/30Introduced method of spreading drum parts across multiple tracks - with this and the material on three ways to re-use regions, it is now possible to do the next assignment 3. Automation is perhaps next, and it is time to do a history topic.
Tuesday 1/31Introduced Reason effects and how to wire them to individual instruments and to the mixer. Announced due dates for the two quizzes, and the cancellation of this Thursday's class for a music department flex day. The Subtractor assignment is supposed to be due today, but not everyone is finished - heard perhaps a half dozen of them, and announced that I would hear the rest at the start of the next meeting.
Wednesday 2/1
Heard remaining assignment 2 from those who were no finished on Monday. Some still have not shown it, but they know that they must tell me when/if they finish. Work time on project 3. Did a _very_ basic introduction to how automation is displayed and entered in Logic - just enough to get people started on it.
DID NOT: Introduced the use of effects/inserts in Logic. Briefly went over a few sample effects, how to add, bypass, and remove them, how to add more, etc. Did not start first EM history topic today. Will need a half hour or so of work time on #3 on Monday before I begin to evaluate them.
Thursday 2/2No meeting due to music department flex day activity in the afternoon
Friday 2/5
Began with a few minutes of work time, then did the "second pass" to hear assignment #2. Plan: work time on #3. Introduce Logic automation. First EM history topic. Assign history quiz 1 for next Friday. Did a quick explanation of the Logic Basics instruments. DID NOT HEAR #3, so plan for start of next week: collect and review quiz, then hear #3, then work time on #4 (need to review it with class), then other stuff as needed...

We had serious attendance problems today. Only eight students were
present at the start of the period, and about 4-5 came in late - some
more than one hour late. Had a serious discussion about this issue with
the class and emailed all absent students and asked for a response from
each of them. Moving on...
Introduced Logic Automation. Automated
volume and panning, and explained how other parameter could be
automated, even individual instrument and plugin parameters. (The latter
discussed conceptually, but don't expect that students will do this
just yet.) Introduced logic plugin effects.
Hear assignment 3 at end of class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic and take-home quiz next week!)

three ways to repeat a region: loop, copy, alias. Intro'd next
assignment. Tuesday 10/14
(NOTE:
Delayed due date for #3 until start of period today.) Explained/demoed
the inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in
parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the
effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they
do. Heard project 3 near the end of the period. Wednesday
10/15
Work time on project 3. Save for next
time: playback of project 3, introduction of EM history topic. (OLD:
Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to
ensure that this happens.) Thursday 10/16
Work
session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the
mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects
(serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason
(at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to

Collect
and review quiz 1. Heard assignment 2 at start of period. Reviewed
techniques for assignment 3: alias, copy, loop; multiple tracks with
same instrument; basic quantizing; volume/panning controller display.
DID NOT start new history topic for quiz 2, which would have been due
next Friday - will need to delay by one week, and think about how this
does or does not affect test schedule. IMPORTANT: I heard assignment 3
from many students but not all - need to hear remaining assignments next
time. Also, did not go on to project 4 information or to the second
quiz presentation.

Will need a half hour or so of work time on #3 on Monday before I begin to evaluate them.

Work
session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the

techniques for assignment 3: alias, copy, loop; multiple tracks with
same instrument; basic quantizing; volume/panning controller display.

<b>CURRENT TERM</b> (General Notes for Week 4 - This week in
all classes we need to go over how to create backups. Need to
start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz.
<b>PREVIOUS TERMS</b> 2011 Fall
Monday 10/17 Reviewed need for
backups and method for creating them, along with the importance of
saving into individual folders within the student files folder.
Introduced basic automation in Logic, including how to create an arrange

topic and went as far as the Teleharmonium - did NOT to the Theremin.
Next time do the Theremin and talk about assigning and scheduling
takehome quizzes and tests. #3 is due - supposedly - 30 minutes into the
period next time.

period on THURSDAY. (There may be others that did not get recorded - if
so, be sure to ask them about it later.)
Wednesday 4/29
CLASS CANCELLED DUE TO MY
ABSENCE - ANNOUNCE SCHEDULE CHANGES NEXT WEEK. Work time on
project 3. Project 3 is due at end of period today - but only a very few
were ready due to our compressed schedule. Those who did not play today
must play back at the start of the next class period. Save for next
time: introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for
synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this
happens.) Thursday
4/30
HEARD ABOUT FOUR #3 PROJECTS AT START
OF PERIOD. Work session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound
modules and the mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to
incorporate effects (serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the
effects modules in Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next
class. (Then on to samplers?) Friday 5/1
Explained how to control/edit
velocity of individual tracks that share the same inst. Finish the first
EM History topic by covering Theremin - the assigned/explained the
first take-home quiz that is due next Friday at start of period. Did a
VERY basic introduction to Logic effects/inserts - showing how to add
them, how to bypass them, how to add more than one, and very briefly
demoed a couple of reverbs - did not cover any particular effects in
detail. Test 1 tentatively scheduled for two weeks from today - the same
day that quiz 2 is due - on May 15. This entails doing the second
history topic next week.
NOTE: Some did not play the assignment that was due this week at
the end of the period. I announced that they could play it at the START
of the 5/8 class. Also, while some can play the next assignment (#4) at
the end of the 5/8 class, I will also be willing to hear it at the start
of the 5/15 class.
---
Monday
1/26
Heard most recent project
(#2). Introduced basic automation of volume and panning in the Arrange
window. Showed but did not explain at all the effects of automation on
the mixer. Talked about but did not do - the automation of parameters
on individual instruments. (Today it was important to get #2 done, hear
it, and start working on #3 - since we're behind the Friday class.) need
to do history #1 on Wednesday. Tuesday 1/27
Hear
remaining project #3 until start of period today. Explained/demoed the
inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in
parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the
effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they
do - a quick overview. Heard project 3 near the end of the period.
Also did a very brief and quick demo on automation in Reason and
announced the next assignment and due date of next class, end of period.
Wednesday 1/28
Work
time on project 3. Project 3 is due at end of period today - but only a
very few were ready due to our compressed schedule. Those who did not play today must play back
at the start of the next class period. Save for next time:
introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for
synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this
happens.) Thursday
1/29
Work
session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the
mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects
(serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in
Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to
samplers?) Friday
1/30
Heard
essentially all project 2. Heard only a handful of assignment 3 - all
others are due at very start of class next week. Went over continuous
controllers in logic arrange window fairly thoroughly. Covered the EM
history through Theremin. EM history quiz 1 due at start of class next
week. Did NOT start topics for assignment 4 - must do next time. Need
to do next EM history section at next class, followed by quiz and
announcement of test 1 date.
---
Monday 10/13
Heard most recent project.
Introduced how to reassign tracks in Logic - multiple tracks with same
instrument, creating new/additional instruments, etc. Also covered the
three ways to repeat a region: loop, copy, alias.
(Then on to
samplers?) Friday Oct 17
Collect
and review quiz 1.

Current Term
Monday 2/6
Work time on #3. Introduced effects inserts in Logic. Then...
Realized that most would not finish #3 today, so moved ahead to do first electronic history presentation. Assigned quiz due date as one week from today. Regarding assignment #3... will need to provide perhaps another 30 minutes of work time on Wednesday, then listen to them. Need to announce and describe #4 and set deadline.
Tuesday 2/7
Collected and reviewed take home quiz 1 on harmonics. Heard assignment #3, the subtractor assignment - which took longer than I expected. (Modification to the assignment for the future might include requiring students to work from init patch on all or some instruments, submit written descriptions of all parameters that they changed, ask them to account for a subset of adjustments whether or not they changed them, etc. - the issue is that a number of them submitted fairly interesting sounds, but they produced them by making very minor changes to preexisting sounds and they did not understand why the sounds worked as they did.) At the end of the period, considered introducing the Matrix sequencer, but there was too little time. Perhaps need to introduce the "velocity" section of the subtractor, at least to demonstrate the concept of having velocity scale the effect of other controls.
Wednesday 12/8
Ended class a few minutes early today. 30 minutes work time on #3, then room circuit to hear this assignment. Went over requirement for #4 and announced due date. Reviewed how to use Logic Basics instruments for assignment #3. (Next time do 2nd EM topic - same day as first take home quiz due. Reminded class to print first quiz TODAY.

2011 Fall
Monday 10/24
Work time on #3. Heard #3 - from those who were finished. Started first history topic.
Wednesday
will primarily be: Hear #3, then finish EM history project and assign
quiz, with any remaining time for work on #4. (May need to delay #4
deadline depending on progress on Wednesday.)
Tuesday 10/25
No Music 8 this term.
Wednesday 10/26
Finished
first EM topic. Assigned Quiz 1 as due next week on Wednesday.
Announced assignment 4 as next project and due next Wednesday also. Work
time to finish #3 or start on #4. Heard remaining #3 assignments.
Reminded class to print first quiz TODAY.
Thursday 10/27
No Music 8 this quarter
Friday 10/28
Completed first EM Topic. Work time on #3. Hear #3. Second EM Topic. Work time on #4. Announce both
take-home quizzes due next Friday at start of class. Announced that
TEST 1 will also be next week! No new Logic topics. Introduced logic
effect inserts and automation.
About next week - we are now up
against the two holidays in November. For this reason two quizzes are
due next week and we do the test and (we hope) assignment 4 is due. It
may or may not be possible to introduce the next Logic topic but this
should happen if at all possible
2011 Spring
Monday 5/2
Heard #3 - from those who
were finished. Introduced automation in Logic including creating a
master volume automation track in Logic and also looked at a few other
ways to use automation. Due date for #4 may have been listed at web site
- but not mentioned in class and may need to be changed - see below. Because
we are a bit behind on #3: last part of period was final in-class time
for working on #3. Class knows that if they are not done today they must
come to Tuesday class tomorrow to finish. Did not do the first EM
history topic. So... Wednesday will primarily be: Hear #3, then EM
history project, with any remaining time for work on #4. (May need to
delay #4 deadline depending on progress on Wednesday. Tuesday 5/3
Introduced
the most basic features of the NN19 and the NNXT, only to the extent of
selecting pre-existing "patches" or instruments. Need to expand on
that next time, along with discussion of layers. Returned
quiz 1 and assigned quiz 2 as due one week from today. Much of the
remainder of the period was work time on the next assignment that is due
Thursday - the "two racks" assignment with effects. Wednesday 5/4
Did
the first EM session and assigned quiz #1 as due one week from today.
Hear remaining #3. Those who were finished #4 could work on #4, which is
also due next week. Thursday 5/5
Introduced
process of creating pitched sample instruments in Logic. Imported
individual pitched samples into the NN19 and went through the process to
ensure accurate mapping to the keyboard. Did a quick explanation of how
to do splits and then how to do layers on the NN-XT. Heard the "two
racks" assignment at the end of the period as students worked on next
assignment - BUT ONLY HEARD ABOUT HALF OF THEM - NEED TO HEAR THE REST
NEXT TIME. Some work time on 5 near end of period. At
some point probably need to go over the process of using Logic as an
audio editor for samples, but need to check ahead on assignments to see
where this is most appropriate. Also week 6 might be a good time to
mention the presentation assignment in a general way, though this could
also wait for perhaps either the end of the week or early the following
week. Friday 5/6
Not this quarter
2011 Winter
Monday 1/31
Introduced first EM history topic - up through Telharmonium and Singing Arc - assign first quiz for one week from today. Many were still not quite finished with assignment #3 so did not listen to it today - instead it is due at the next class period, with at least 30 minutes available at start of that session to work on it. Went over creating a master volume automation track in Logic and also looked at a few other ways to use automation. Due date for #4 may have been listed at web site - but not mentioned in class and may need to be changed.
Tuesday 2/1Introduced NN19 fairly completely and did a very cursory introduction to the NNXT - need to expand on that next time, along with discussion layers.
Wednesday 2/2Work time on #3, then hear #3. Announced #4 as due at end of period next time, but this is probably unrealistic, given that most didn't finish #3 until end of period today - will likely need to announce at start of period that it won't be due until Wednesday. (Sigh... :-) Also, told class that any who were not ready to play back #3 today must tell me when they are finished, as I will not be listening to them as part of regular class activities otherwise.
Thursday 2/3
Went over the layering features of the NNXT. Imported individual pitched samples into the NN19 and went through the process to ensure accurate mapping to the keyboard. Reminded concerning assignment 5. Some work time on 5 near end of period. Heard 4 from all but a very small number who were not ready. (Remind them next time to play 4 for me.)
At some point probably need to go over the process of using Logic as an audio editor for samples, but need to check ahead on assignments to see where this is most appropriate. Also week 6 might be a good time to mention the presentation assignment in a general way.
Friday 2/4
Busy day...
Presented second electronic music topic and assigned quiz 2 as due at start of next class. Also announced that test 1 will be scheduled for end of next class meeting (need to grade quizzes during that class), and that the following Friday will be a holiday.
Introduced basics about editing sounds on the ES1 subtractive synth so that some can start on #5. We should try to have #5 finished at the end of next class, but will no doubt have to accommodate a few who may not have it completed.
Heard remaining #3 and a very few #4 by the end of the period. Almost all students said they were nearly done with #4, so we agreed that I would hear it perhaps 15 minutes after going over quiz 2 next week. (Week 6 session will be "high pressure," as we discussed today, since we need to attempt to finish #5 before we miss class the following week for a holiday.)
Fall 2010
Monday 10/18
Introduced first half of
first EM history topic - up through Telharmonium and Singing Arc. Did
NOT assignt first quiz yet. Many were still not quite finished with
assignment #3 so did not listen to it today - instead it is due 10
minutes into the next class period. Those who were already finished
began work on #4. Due date for #4 may have been listed at web site - but
not mentioned in class and may need to be changed.
Tuesday 10/19Had
software problems today necessitating switching to my laptop and then
reinstalling Reason on the instructor's computer. Because I had to
resolve this I did NOT hear
#4 - effects racks in Reason. Announced that this is now due at the
very START of the next class session. Introduced the Merger/Splitter
module and briefly explored how to automate Reason. Reviewed the second
take-home quiz - on FM.
(DID NOT DO THE FOLLOWING - Introduced the NN19 basics: loading
pre-configured instruments, basics of building a pitched instrument from
samples. Next time need to see how to build instrument from samples not
in the NN19 library and also move on to the NNXT. Need to announce due
date for assignment 5.)
Wednesday 10/20Completed
the first EM history topic with the Theremin, and assigned the first
take home quiz to be due next Wednesday. Heard may assignment #3, but
not all - must hear the remaining at the start of the next class. Work
time on project 4, which is due next Wednesday. Reminded class that
take-home quiz 1 is due at next class meeting.
DID NOT: Covered how to back up files to server. Also briefly introduced the velocity tool and the undo history.
Thursday 10/21
Basic introduction
to the NN19 and NNXT completed including basics of importing individual
samples and just barely of how to create layers. I should probably still
go through an example of the full process of creating a full instrument
from basic samples. I should also introduce/demo the other controls on
the front panels of the samplers.
Need to remind about the Logic assignment
Friday 10/22
Completed
first electronic music history topic - through Theremin. (Fall 2010
term, started this last week - one week earlier due to extra winter 2010
holidays and need to move faster to accommodate them.) Announced
take-home quiz due next Friday at start of class. #4 is due next week,
but many may need the whole period to work on it. Some still did not
play #3, and I said I would hear them near the start of the class next
week.
Went over using thumb drives for backup and moving files.
Introduce methods for editing logic basics instruments so that #5 can
start with an optimistic goal of finishing by end of period next week.
(By the end of the period today it became clear that this goal would be
too optimistic - probably need to actually hear it at the next session
after that... and reevaluate the calendar as a whole with a plan that
will get through all topics, quizzes, projects, with time left for final
projects.)
(likely will finish introducing necessary topics next
week, provide work time next week, and have assignment due at the
following session (week 7).
Issue: We're getting behind - not
your fault, but the issue is our compressed schedule. Not all are done
with 3 today, so best objective is to have everyone finish 4 next week -
but we'll still be behind. In the end this could leave us with
insufficient time for final projects - not a good thing!
Spring 2010
Monday 5/3
Quick review of effects. Introduce first EM history topic. Assign quiz for next Monday. Work on #4.
Tuesday 5/4
Had
software problems today necessitating switching to my laptop and then
reinstalling Reason on the instructor's computer.
Wednesday 5/5
Work
time on project 4, which is due at the next class. Reminded class that
take-home quiz 1 is due at next class meeting. Covered how to back up
files to server. Also briefly introduced the velocity tool and the undo
history.
Thursday 5/6
Basic introduction to the NN19 and NNXT completed including
basics of importing individual samples and just barely of how to create
layers. I should probably still go through an example of the full
process of creating a full instrument from basic samples. I should also
introduce/demo the other controls on the front panels of the samplers.
Need to remind about the Logic assignment
Friday 5/7
Present
first electronic music history topic - through Theremin. Announce
take-home quiz due next Friday at start of class. Will NOT make the next
assignment due next week - more likely will finish introducing
necessary topics next week, provide work time next week, and have
assignment due at the following session (week 7).
Still need to: go over the backup/file server information.
(Note
that the week 7 session is shaping up to be a busy one w/o much time
for presenting new topics since: a) need to go over second quiz that
week, b) need to give first test that week at end of period, c) need to
hear project 5.
Winter 2010
Monday 2/1
Introduce the addition of
effects inserts in the Logic mixer. Went over how to add, bypass, and
select specific presets, how to view on mixer or in arrange window.
Heard #3. (Review earlier plan for more details) Need to do history
topic on Wednesday.
Tuesday 2/2
Heard
#4 - effects racks in Reason. Introduced the NN19 basics: loading
pre-configured instruments, basics of building a pitched instrument from
samples. Next time need to see how to build instrument from samples not
in the NN19 library and also move on to the NNXT. Clearly announced due
date for assignment 5.
Wednesday 2/3
Work
time on project 4, which is due at next class. Also, did the first EM
history topic and assigned the first take home quiz - due at start of
next class.
Other things to do: how to edit velocity in the piano roll view -
especially as a solution when several parts using the same Inst.
Thursday
2/4
A few more basic features of NN19, including use of outside
samples. Basic intro to NNXT, including velocity layer concept.
Assignment 5 due next week. Also reminded everyone that Logic assignment
(#1) will be due by end of week 6 - and who needs to do it. Significant
work time on #5.
Still need to
do the take-home quiz on modulation, etc.
Last quarter: Introduced
the creation of custom sample instruments on the NN19. Loaded sounds
from the NN19 (and NNXT) sound folders in Reason. Also looked at
importing sample files from external sources. Work time on assignment 5. Friday
2/5
Perhaps did not
take correct notes on this class?
I believe I did the second EM
history presentation, since it is due at next class - on the same day as
test 2. I believe I also may have done the basic intro to editing the
ES1. Heard assignments due today?
(Note: we are somewhat ahead of
the MW
class in terms of projects, but under more pressure in terms of
quizzes/tests.) Assigned quiz 1. Did second EM History topic. (NOT SURE
OF THE FOLLOWING: Heard only a
very few assignment 4 at end of period - delay deadline until start of
next period. Did not yet assign #5 - that will be explained next week
and due the week after. Need to announce upcoming dates for quiz 2 and
test 1. Quiz 1 due at start of period.)
Did the intro to simple
editing on the ES1 synth, along with the overview of the front panel top
level
Last quarter: Work time
on project 3 (due at end of period today). Quiz 2 assigned. Example of
1950s electronic music: poeme electronique. Info for project #4 (due
next class) with automation, using Logic Basics instruments, and
including effects. FALL 2009
Monday 10/19
Introduce the addition of
effects inserts in the Logic mixer. Went over how to add, bypass, and
select specific presets, how to view on mixer or in arrange window. Then
DID NOT hear #3. Too many were too far from being done - or else I had
previously confused the class about the deadline. We had a talk about
the importance of "getting it done first and making it better later."
Deadline for #3 extended to START of Wednesday class, and informed class
that they must use open lab if they were not finished at end of today's
session.
OLD NOTES:
Catch
up from last week's absence. Complete EM history topic (Theremin) and
assign quiz for this Wednesday. Edit velocity when one inst is split
across tracks. Inserting effects.
Tuesday
10/20
Introduced use of effects modules
connected via the aux send/return lines directly to the mixer, and
described the assignment using the effects modules.
Last quarter:
Introduced the Matrix
sequencer, with control over the Subtractor. Barely
introduced the NN19 sampler, showing how to load default instruments
from the disk and the basics of building an instrument from sound files.
Heard assignment 4.
Wednesday 10/21
PLAN
includes: explain the use of the server for backup. (Delay this until
next week:Cover first EM topic.) Announce and set realistic due date for
next assignment. Other things to do: how to edit velocity in the piano
roll view -
especially as a solution when several parts using the same Inst.
NOTE:
See Monday's summary for due assignment.
SPRING 2009: What
we really did! Reviewed quiz 1, which was due in class today. Reviewed
selecting Logic Basics instruments and then selecting their sounds -
also how to switch to a different LBI later or how to get back to the
"main" Media list by selecting "no plugin." Announced that the next
assignment (4) will be due at the END (rather than the start) of the
period on Monday. Could still add some info to the use of effects-
since we only did the basics of this the previous week. Next week -
must do the second EMH topic on Monday; quiz due on Wednesday; TEST the
following Monday. Winter 2009: Last
quarter: Collected
EM History Quiz 1 and reviewed it. Introduced the use of Logic plugin
effects via the Insert buttons in the Arrange window - showed how to
add them and took a look at some of the specific plugins. Partially a
work day on project 4 that is due next week. Electronic music
history quiz 2 collected. Introduced To do next time:
automating the control of master volume. Thursday
10/22
We are slightly behind, but there is
time
to catch up. Did a brief introduction to using the Matrix Pattern
Sequencer with the Subtractor, including the use of gate and curve CV.
Did not do the split/merge module - save for later. Next need to
introduce the samplers, starting with the simpler of the two. Note that
next assignment is due Tuesday and that project 1 is due next week.
Reviewed project 1 requirements earlier this week.
Still need to do the take-home quiz on modulation, etc.
Last quarter: Introduced
the creation of custom sample instruments on the NN19. Loaded sounds
from the NN19 (and NNXT) sound folders in Reason. Also looked at
importing sample files from external sources. Work time on assignment 5. Friday
10/23 (Note: we are somewhat ahead of the
MW
class in terms of projects, but under more pressure in terms of
quizzes/tests.) Assigned quiz 1. Did first EM History topic. Heard only a
very few assignment 4 at end of period - delay deadline until start of
next period. Did not yet assign #5 - that will be explained next week
and due the week after. Need to announce upcoming dates for quiz 2 and
test 1. Quiz 1 due at start of period .
Did the intro to simple
editing on the ES1 synth, along with the overview of the front panel top
level
Last quarter: Work time
on project 3 (due at end of period today). Quiz 2 assigned. Example of
1950s electronic music: poeme electronique. Info for project #4 (due
next class) with automation, using Logic Basics instruments, and
including effects.
Monday 5/4
Catch
up from last week's absence. Complete EM history topic (Theremin) and
assign quiz for this Wednesday. Edit velocity when one inst is split
across tracks. Inserting effects.
Tuesday 5/5
Introduced the
Matrix sequencer, with control over the Subtractor. Barely
introduced the NN19 sampler, showing how to load default instruments
from the disk and the basics of building an instrument from sound files.
Heard assignment 4.
Wednesday 5/6
What
we really did! Reviewed quiz 1, which was due in class today. Reviewed
selecting Logic Basics instruments and then selecting their sounds -
also how to switch to a different LBI later or how to get back to the
"main" Media list by selecting "no plugin." Announced that the next
assignment (4) will be due at the END (rather than the start) of the

since we only did the basics of this the previous week. Next week -
must do the second EMH topic on Monday; quiz due on Wednesday; TEST the
following Monday. Last quarter: Collected
Thursday 5/7
Demonstrated
methods for building same instruments from individual samples in Reason
NN19, then allowed for about a half hour of work time. Introduced the
first take-home quiz - MUST REVIEW THIS MATERIAL NEXT TUESDAY!
Last quarter: Introduced
the creation of custom sample instruments on the NN19. Loaded sounds
from the NN19 (and NNXT) sound folders in Reason. Also looked at
importing sample files from external sources. Work time on assignment 5. Friday 5/7 (Note:
we are somewhat ahead of the MW class in terms of projects, but under
more pressure in terms of quizzes/tests.) Reviewed quiz 1. Did second
EM History topic. Heard only a very few assignment 4 at end of period -
delay deadline until start of next period. Did not yet assign #5 - that
will be explained next week and due the week after. Announced next week
dates for quiz 2 and test 1. Quiz due at start of period and test
likely during last 45 minutes or so.
Last
quarter: Work time on project 3 (due at end of period today). Quiz 2
assigned. Example of 1950s electronic music: poeme electronique. Info
for project #4 (due next class) with automation, using Logic Basics
instruments, and including effects.
Monday 2/2
Heard assignment
3. Did first EM history topic. Quiz 1 due at start of period. Barely
introduced the very most basic concept about using Logic Basics plugins
- basically how to select them and how to use preset sounds. Need to do
other assignment 4 information on Wednesday. Make assignment 4 due at
start of period one week from Wednesday. (OLD NOTES: Went over:
bouncing tracks, basic addition of effects inserts, volume/pan
reviewed, assignment 4 introduced, work time on assignment 3... Did not
hear #3 at end of period...) Tuesday 2/3
Introduced the Matrix sequencer,
with control over the Subtractor. Barely
introduced the NN19 sampler, showing how to load default instruments
from the disk and the basics of building an instrument from sound files. Wednesday 2/4
Collected
EM History Quiz 1 and reviewed it. Introduced the use of Logic plugin
effects via the Insert buttons in the Arrange window - showed how to
add them and took a look at some of the specific plugins. Partially a
work day on project 4 that is due next week. Electronic music

automating the control of master volume. Thursday 2/5
Introduced
the creation of custom sample instruments on the NN19. Loaded sounds
from the NN19 (and NNXT) sound folders in Reason. Also looked at
importing sample files from external sources. Work time on assignment 5. Friday 2/6
Work
time on project 3 (due at end of period today). Quiz 2 assigned.
Example of 1950s electronic music: poeme electronique. Info for
project #4 (due next class) with automation, using Logic Basics
instruments, and including effects.

Monday 2/2
Heard
assignment 3. Did first EM history topic. Quiz 1 due at start of
period. Barely
introduced the very most basic concept about using Logic Basics plugins
- basically how to select them and how to use preset sounds. Need to do
other assignment 4 information on Wednesday. Make assignment 4 due at
start of period one week from Wednesday. (OLD NOTES: Went over:

Current TermMonday 10/31
Heard a few last #3 assignments. Students who have not shown this yet must let me know when done. Did 2nd EM topic. Announce quiz #1 #2, and test 1. Work time on #4, which is due at next Monday's class session.
Tuesday 11/1
No 8 this quarter
Wednesday 11/2
Collected first quiz and reviewed. Work time on currently due project #4. Will delay playback of #4 until Monday's class. Announced due date for #5 as next Wednesday. Announced test 1 date one week after that.
Introduced global tracks. Went over ES1 editing for the next assignment - did basics of octave, oscillators, filter - did not do ADSR.
(Future/next topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday 11/3
No 8 this quarter
Friday 5/13
We are accelerating the schedule this week since there are two fall term holidays, including one next Friday. Today we reviewed quizzes #1 and #2, both of which were due today. Test #1 is at the end of the period. Work time on #4, which is due later in the period. Introduce basic ES 1 editing techniques for assignment #5, which students may start today. Will need some work time on it at next meeting in two weeks, since it will be due later in the period that day.
Previous Terms2011 Spring Monday 5/9
Went over ES1 editing for the next assignment. Work time on #4, which is due at next class session. Introduced global tracks. Next time: second electronic music topic. Announce date for test 1 Tuesday 5/10
Went
over quiz 2. NEGLECTED TO SET TEST DATE - DO THIS NEXT TIME. Heard
remaining assignment #4. Introduced the basics of Rewire, including how
to rewire the Reason Mixer or individual Reason instruments into Logic.
Did not do the External MIDI aspect of this yet - for next time? Did
not yet assign the deadline for submitting proposals - perhaps do that
before that start of Thursday's class? The rest of the period was work
time on the NNXT/NN19/Matrix assignment that is due next meeting. Wednesday 5/11
Collected
first quiz and reviewed. Work time on currently due project #4. Will
delay playback of #4 until the start on next Monday's class. Announced
due date for #5 as next Wednesday. Announced test 1 date one week after
that. Did second EM history topic. (Future/next
topics to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more
methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday 5/12
Changed
course just a bit today. Did second rewire session in which we create
arrange tracks in logic that hold midi data for reason instruments. The
assignment based on this is due next Thursday Introduced
the class presentation assignment and explained roughly how it works.
Set deadline for proposals as two weeks from today. (Will need to check
in on progress sometime during next week's class - likely on Thursday.)
Posted and announced the date of test #2 - see quiz schedule. Delayed
deadline for #5 - which had been today - until the first half of next
Tuesday's class. (Note: It is quite possible that having #6 finished by
next Thursday may be too aggressive of a schedule.) Friday 5/13
Not this term
2011 Winter Monday 2/7
Reviewed quiz 1. Changed deadline for next assignment (4) from end of today to middle of next session. (At next session, start with new material for next assignment - e .g sound editing of logic basics - follow with 45 minutes work time on #4, etc.) Introduced second electronic music topic - BUT DID NOT PLAY VARESE YET.
Announced: Quiz 2 due next Monday Test 1 the next class session after that on Wednesday
Tuesday 2/8
Mentioned the date of the test in a week and that it covers the two quizzes. Handed back the quizzes. Introduced the basic idea of the presentation assignment and talked a bit about selecting topics. Did not yet assign the deadline for submitting proposals - perhaps do that before that start of Thursday's class? The rest of the period was work time on the NNXT/NN19/Matrix assignment that is due next. At the end of the period it seemed like a few were done, but certainly not all. Likely will need some time for this at next class. Also at next class, probably time to start introducing material for next assignment using Rewire - perhaps near start of period for those finished with current assignment and ready to go on.
Wednesday 2/9
Introduced the basic methods of modifying/creating sound on the ES1 as required for assignment 5. DID NOT ANNOUNCE DEADLINE FOR ASSIGNMENT 5 YET - it will likely be the first session after the break.
DID NOT hear #4 after all. Only perhaps a half dozen students were finished. MUST hear them near start of next period - no more work time - play them in whatever form they are in.
(Future/next topics
to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more
methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday
2/10
Changed course just a bit today. Introduced the use of Rewire to interconnect Reason and Logic. Covered all three aspects in at least a basic way: connecting mixer audio from Reason into Logic Mixer, connecting individual instrument to Logic Mixer, and creating external MIDI tracks in Logic. Because of this, did not hear #5 at end of period. Will do this at start of class on Tuesday.
Friday 2/11
Review quiz #2. Grade and return quizzes #1 and #2. Work time on #5 (and for some #4). Test 1 after break. More work time on #5. Introduction to Logic audio editing for #6 - may need to return to this since today's intro was very basic and brief. Hear remaining #4 and #5.
Fall 2010
Monday 10/25
Reminder about quiz #1 due
at next class. (Need to do next topic, schedule quiz and test 1.) Did a
very quick introduction to sound editing on the ES1, including how to
save an instrument. Heard assignment 3. Reminder about assignment 4.
Introduced the ES1 editing needed for assignment 5. (Might need to make
brief mention of editing on EFM 1 next time?)
Tuesday 10/26
Heard
all remaining current project (4?). Went over an example of how to
construct a pitched sample instrument from individual samples. Did early
introduction of the class presentation project - mostly just to get
students thinking about it. Next project due soon.
Wednesday 10/27
Reviewed
first quiz after turning it in. Did NOT do next topic yet - will do
that next time. (Going a bit slow since we are ahead of the Friday
class.) Introduced the EFM1 and went over requirements for #4 and #5.
Decided to wait until Monday to hear #4 - close to the start of the
period.
Next time must do second electronic music history topic
and quiz 2 for next class. Good idea to also set and announce date for
test 1.
(Future/next topics
to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more
methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday
10/28
Did a very basic introduction to the class
presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for
presentation proposals - this was more about getting people thinking
about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class -
due the following week.
Went further into Rewire - mapped
separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and
then individually into Logic tracks. Have not yet made the assignment
for #6 - need to start the period next Tuesday with this.
Friday
10/29
Largely same as MW, with deadlines, etc. as listed.
Tentative plan as of start of class: 1. review quiz - OK 2. hear #4 - Only fewer than half dozen done - now at start of next class - those who need more time MUST use MW class lab time. 3. quick review of editing ES1 and add EFM1 - OK 4. Announce goal of quick work on #5 to finish at middle of next period - sacrifice recorded tracks to get there? - OK 5. 2nd topic and announce quiz. - OK 6. Test 1 at end of next class? - OK 7. loop recording? - NO...
Next time: Hear 5 at middle of period. 6 due at start of class after that. test next time. intro audio editing next time. Spring 2010
Monday 5/10
Reviewed quiz #1. Mentioned
that coverage of next quiz topic would be on Wednesday, with due date
for next quiz to be Monday, May 17. (Test could be 5/19 or 5/24.) Did a
very quick introduction to sound editing on the ES1, including how to
save an instrument. Heard assignment 4.
Tuesday 5/11
Heard
all remaining current project (4?). Went over an example of how to
construct a pitched sample instrument from individual samples. Did early
introduction of the class presentation project - mostly just to get
students thinking about it. Next project due soon.
Wednesday 5/12
Did
second electronic music history topic. Assigned quiz 2 for next class.
Did a quick review of how to edit and save ES1 and EFM1 instruments.
Heard some remaining #4 projects
(automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5,
which is due at the end of class next Wednesday.
(topics
to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more
methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday
5/13
Did a very basic introduction to the class
presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for
presentation proposals - this was more about getting people thinking
about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class -
due the following week.
Went further into Rewire - mapped
separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and

for #6 - need to start the period next Tuesday with this.
Friday
5/14
Largely same as MW, with deadlines, etc. as listed.
Winter 2010
Monday 2/8
Heard about half of the next
assignment - the rest to be heard in class on Wednesday.
Collected/reviewed first quiz. Next topic at Wednesday class, followed
by quiz 2 due date a week later (given the Monday holiday) and test
after that as indicated on quizzes page. Did VERY quick and cursory
intro to editing the ES1, though no more than pointing out that there
are control and where to find them, and how to save an instrument.
Tuesday
2/9
Project 5 due today -
heard almost all but
there are still a few to hear at the next class. (Project semi-due in
the next week or so.) Did the very basic intro to Rewire, including how
to start the programs and how to set up a channel strip in the Logic
mixer and how to create an audio track in Logic for automation.
Wednesday
2/10
Heard some remaining #4 projects
(automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5,
which is due at the end of class next Wednesday. Did second EM history
topic and assigned quiz 2 as due next Wednesday - next class meeting.
(topics
to do? Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more
methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation.) Thursday
2/11
Did a very basic introduction to the class
presentation assignment, but did not yet assign a due date for
presentation proposals - this was more about getting people thinking
about the presentations. Need to assign proposals at the next class -
due the following week.
Went further into Rewire - mapped
separate Reason instruments directly through the hardware interface and
then individually into Logic tracks. Have not yet made the assignment
for #6 - need to start the period next Tuesday with this.
Friday
10/30
No class due to
Presidents Day holiday
Fall 2009
Monday 10/26
Will present the first EM
topic next time with quiz to follow at Monday class and then first test
very soon thereafter - also need to do the second topic as soon as next
Monday. Work time on #4 with projects due at end of period. Did VERY
quick and cursory intro to editing the ES1, though no more than pointing
out that there are control and where to find them, and how to save an
instrument. In order to stay on track with Friday class (which moves
ahead now, but falls back later) need to do the intro to editing the ES1
very soon.
Tuesday
10/26
After
hearing the last of #4 we had some work time on project 5 which is now
due at the END of the period next class. Introduced the use of the
NN19, both to bring in pre-set sample instruments and to build an
instrument from individual samples. Still did not assign the quiz! Need
to do that and perhaps demo the NN-XT next time - though one or both
could wait a session if time is needed for work on #5. (Save for
later: basic introduction to Rewire - stereo audio from Reason into
the Logic mixer and then individual instruments from Reason into
separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)
Wednesday
10/28
Heard some remaining #4 projects
(automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5,
which is due at the end of class next Monday. Did not do the EM history
session yet - intentionally delayed it until next Monday... but really
need to do it then. Will need work time on #5 on Monday, and could delay
deadline until start of Wednesday class if necessary to do EM history.
Should
also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner.
Also: recording mixer automation, possibly automation of values other
than pan/volume. Thursday
10/29
Project
6 is next week - maybe... I did not announce it or go over required
techniques yet. Need to do this next week on Tuesday. (STILL NEED TO DO
THE QUIZ.) DID: introduce the NN-XT. How to do layers, including
velocity layers. Heard #5 from most students but a few need to be
checked next Tuesday. Introduced the CV Splitter/merger, mostly in the
context of splitting. Very briefly pointed out the existence of the
audio equivalent module. Only checked a couple #1 assignments. Need to
follow up on this next time.
(Did not yet do the basic
introduction to Rewire. Rewired audio from Reason into the Mixer in
Logic - from the Reason Mixer (stereo) and from the Reason Interface
(individual channel per instrument).
Friday
10/30
Reviewed Quiz #1 at start of period. Did a
brief overview of the EFM 1. Went over the ADSR on the ES 1. Introduced
imported audio - but only basics: download from sampleswap.org, import
audio to track - did not look at audio editor at all. Need to finish
into to using audio samples in Logic next week and assign #6 as due at
following session. Should probably assign the Logic quiz next week for
due date at class after that, leaving one more topic preso for later.
(For assign 6 which will likely be due not next week but the following
class session.) Did EM topic two and assigned quiz. Announced quiz due
at start of next class and Test #1 at end of same session.
Monday 5/11
Presented the second EM
history topic, assigned quiz due Wednesday, announced test for one week
from today. Work time on #4 with projects due at end of period... but
fewer than half of the students had completed it - so remaining
students can play it back at the start of the period on Wednesday.
(Before?/After? the quiz is reviewed?)
Tuesday 5/12
Primarily
work time on project 5 which is now due at the start of the period next
class. Reviewed harmonics and frequency modulation sidebands for the
take-home quiz that is due at the start of the period on Thursday. Did
a quick introduction to the NNXT, demonstrating how to load instruments
and samples, how to create a simple layer, and the basic concept of
velocity layers. (Save for later: Did the basic introduction to Rewire
- brought stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then
brought individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic
tracks/channel strips.)
Wednesday 5/13
Collected
and reviewed quiz 2. Announced that test 1 will be one week from today
on Monday. Introduced the editing of plugin synths in Logic - used the
ES1 Subtractive Synth mostly, but also a bit of EFM, ESX24, and
Ultrabeat - and how to save settings for later use. Heard assignment 4.
Made assignment 5. (Next class will also largely be a work session on
assignment 5 - though perhaps return the two quizzes at the beginning
and do the test at the end!) (Still need to perhaps take a closer look
at the mixer, including how to record automation directly from the
mixer controls. Perhaps need to take a quick look at editing the EFM 1
synth.) (Question: Did we cover the automation of plug-in controls in
this class?)
Thursday 5/14
Project 6
is next week. Did the basic introduction to Rewire. Rewired audio from
Reason into the Mixer in Logic - from the Reason Mixer (stereo) and
from the Reason Interface (individual channel per instrument).
Demonstrated how to add a track in the Arrange window for each input
from Reason. Did NOT describe assignment 6 - must do that next time.
Friday 5/15
Review
quiz 2 at start of period. Then heard playback of all remaining project
4. Introduce editing techniques for assignment 5* and provide some work
time on it - need to specify deadline (start or end of the following
week?). Test 1 during final 45 minutes of period - students who
complete test early may work on #5. *This included a decent exploration
of the ES1, a short intro to EFM, and very brief look at EXS24 and
Ultrabeat.
Monday
2/9
BWork time on project 4
(deadline now end of Wednesday class). EM History 2 topics. Quiz 2 due
Wednesday. Announced test #1 for a week from Wednesday.
Tuesday 2/10
Primarily
work time on project 5 which is now due at the start of the period next
class. Did the basic introduction to Rewire - brought stereo audio from
Reason into the Logic mixer and then brought individual instruments
from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.
Wednesday 2/11
Collected
and reviewed quiz 2. Announced that test 1 will be one week from today
on Wednesday. Introduced the editing of plugin synths in Logic - used
the ES1 Subtractive Synth only - and how to save settings for later
use. DID NOT HEAR ASSIGNMENT 4 AGAIN - MUST DO THIS AT START OF NEXT
CLASS. (Next class will also largely be a work session on assignment
5.) (Still need to perhaps take a closer look at the mixer, including
how to record automation directly from the mixer controls. Perhaps need
to take a quick look at editing the EFM 1 synth.) (Question: Did we
cover the automation of plug-in controls in this class?)
Thursday 2/12
Project 5
is due today. Did a very, very basic introduction to Logic and went
over a few basics regarding sample instrument design on the NNXT. Friday 2/13 General
plan for 5/15/09: Collect and review quiz 2 at start of period. Then
hear playback of all remaining project 4. Introduce editing techniques
for assignment 5 and provide some work time on it - need to specify
deadline (start or end of the following week?). Test 1 during final 45
minutes of period - students who complete test early may work on #5.

assign date for #6, introduce final project assignment. Thursday 5/19
Largely
work time on #6, due next week. Took test #1. Did a group review of
class presentations. (Need to do the following NEXT TIME: Introduce the
workflow for capturing, editing, and adding samples to NN-XT and NN-19.
Imported "Astor" track into Logic. Extracted a phrase and edited it.
Saved, then imported into a NN18 instrument. A few students needed to
make up Tuesday's test #1.) Went over some deadlines, etc. Ask what
people have in mind for their class presentations. Friday, 5/20
Not this term.

Friday, 2/18
NO CLASS - HOLIDAY.
(Older notes from spring 2010 follow - fall 2010 had a very compressed schedule that cannot be used in normal terms.) This was "catch up" day for the Friday class. Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Graded project 4. Did test 1. Did quick reviews of topic previously covered: making server backups and editing sounds for assignment 5. Work time on #5. Thought it might be finished today, but not the case - due at start of next class.)
Fall 2010
Monday 11/1
Heard #4 - but many were
still not finished at start of period. Reviewed "cycle" and looked at
"tools" for things including quantizing, velocity, etc. Work time on
assignment 5. (Today's plan would have been to include the 2nd EM
history topic, but putting that off until Wednesday with changes to test
and quiz date as well.)
Did NOT present material for quiz 2 - present this next time with quiz due next WEDNESDAY and test the following MONDAY.
(Hold
off on starting to introduce use of audio samples in Logic including
downloads from sampleswap.org. Decided to not do this intro, and to
instead save it for start of period on Wednesday, along with playback of
assignment 5 - could delay one more class session if 5 still not done.)
Tuesday 11/2
Reviewed
the use of external MIDI instruments with Reason instrument. Overview
of the setup of both the audio and the control connections between Logic
and Reason via Rewire. Need to go over setting up audio tracks ("Create
Arrange Tracks...") for each device and reasons for doing so - though
maybe not as we have touched on this
Explained the class presentation proposals and announced due date as listed.
It appears that I have not heard/graded assignment 5 - must do that on Thursday.
Wednesday 11/3
Heard
remaining #4 assignments that were finished. Will not ask for them
again. Work time on #5 with new due date for next week. Did the second
electronic music history topic - assigned quz 2 due date and set test 1
date.
Did not get to the following: "We signed up for Sampleswap
and went over how to find and download files. Also gave a very basic
demonstration of how to import the audio files into Logic tracks and
very quickly showed how to match their length to bar lines or adjust
sequence tempo to match sample tempo/length." (Do this next time.)
Thursday 11/4
Heard
#5 - finally - from many of the students, but a few still need to show
it. (Some did not understand all parts of the assignment.) The period
was almost entirely for work time on #6 which is due at the next
session.
Need
to introduce the basic workflow of bringing audio into Logic for
editing, saving edited samples, and then importing into Reason
instruments - as used in assignment 7. Also update on the due date for
the presentation proposals - perhaps hear from students on their "ideas
in progress" at the next session.

CLASS NEXT WEEK. Time to get ahead of the other class. Started with
review of quiz 2. Work time on #5 which is due today. Set up for access
to sampleswap.org. Gave a quick demo of how to bring audio into Logic
and beat match it. Test #1. Work time on #6 (due next session on 11/19).
(Older notes from spring 2010 follow - fall 2010 had a very
compressed schedule that cannot be used in normal terms.) This was
"catch up" day for the Friday class. Collected and reviewed quiz 2.
Graded project 4. Did test 1. Did quick reviews of topic previously
covered: making server backups and editing sounds for assignment 5. Work
time on #5. Thought it might be finished today, but not the case - due
at start of next class.)
2010 Spring
Monday 5/17
Turned in and reviewed quiz
2. Announced and discussed the first test - scheduled for one week from
today. Work time on assignment 5.
(Had considered starting to
introduce use of audio samples in Logic including downloads from
sampleswap.org, but only one or two were finished with assignment 5.
Decided to not do this intro, and to instead save it for start of period
on Wednesday, followed that day by a bit more work time on 5 and then
playback of 5.)
Tuesday 5/18
Reviewed
the use of external MIDI instruments with Reason instrument. Overview
of the setup of both the audio and the control connections between Logic
and Reason via Rewire.
Wednesday 5/19
We
signed up for Sampleswap and went over how to find and download files.
Also gave a very basic demonstration of how to import the audio files
into Logic tracks and very quickly showed how to match their length to
bar lines or adjust sequence tempo to match sample tempo/length. Then
there was work time on #5, due today. Reminded the class that test 1 is
next Monday.
I heard perhaps 2/3 or 3/4 of the assignment 5
examples. A few were not ready and others I didn't get to. Need to hear
them next Monday - which is also the test day.
Next time need to incorporate samples in to Logic and look at editing them.
Thursday 5/20
Heard
#5 - finally - from many of the students, but a few still need to show
it. (Some did not understand all parts of the assignment.) The period
was almost entirely for work time on #6 which is due at the next
session.
Need to introduce the basic workflow of bringing audio
into Logic for editing, saving edited samples, and then importing into
Reason instruments - as used in assignment 7. Also update on the due
date for the presentation proposals - perhaps hear from students on
their "ideas in progress" at the next session.
Friday, 5/21
This
was "catch up" day for the Friday class. Collected and reviewed quiz 2.
Graded project 4. Did test 1. Did quick reviews of topic previously
covered: making server backups and editing sounds for assignment 5. Work
time on #5. Thought it might be finished today, but not the case - due
at start of next class.
2010 Winter
Monday 2/15
Holiday - no class
Tuesday
2/16
Reviewed the use of external MIDI
instruments with Reason instrument. Overview of the setup of both the
audio and the control connections between Logic and Reason via Rewire.
Need to go over setting up audio tracks ("Create Arrange Tracks...") for
each device and reasons for doing so.
Explained the class
presentation proposals and announced due date of Feb. 25.
Wednesday
2/17
Reviewed Quiz 2 and reminded the class
that test 1 is next Monday. Heard remaining projects 4 - only a few
individuals may not have played/shown it, and they need to let me know
when it is finished. Signed everyone up for sampleswap; downloaded a
drum loop; imported it into an audio track in Logic. Went over how to
synchronize the tempo of a single loop and the Logic sequence by
CHANGING THE LOGIC TEMPO. Did not yet do the audio editor or pitch/time
machine or other factory options.
Next time: Start period with
more on audio editing as pertaining to the use of samples in Logic.
Then, at about 1:10, hand out the test. As people finish the test, hear
assignment 5. (This was all announced at today's class.)
Introduced
the use of imported audio,
which we obtained from sampleswap. Looked at bringing in multiple audio
clips and two ways of synchronizing their tempos. Heard #5 and a couple
remaining #4. Reviewed quiz at start of period. STILL NEED TO DO HISTORY
TOPIC 2, assign quiz 2 and test 1 date.
Thursday
2/18
Assignment 6 was to be due at start of
period today, but only a handful were finished. Introduced the basic
workflow of bringing audio into Logic for editing, saving edited
samples, and then importing into Reason instruments - as used in
assignment 7.
Friday,
2/19
This was "catch up" day for the Friday
class. Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Graded project 4. Did test 1. Did
quick reviews of topic previously covered: making server backups and
editing sounds for assignment 5. Work time on #5. Thought it might be
finished today, but not the case - due at start of next class.
2009 Fall
Monday 11/2
Did first EM history preso
(way behind schedule!) and assigned quiz for next class session. Work
time on #5. Will hear #5 at START of period next time. Also next time:
intro use of audio samples, history topic #2 (?), set test 1 date.
Tuesday
11/3
Introduced Rewire today - and did the
whole thing including routing mixed and individual audio from Reason to
Logic and routing Arrange track control info to Reason instruments.
Consolidated old assignments 6 and 6A into current 6, but need to
formally announce it to class next time.
There are still projects
that I have not heard: some #5 and all #1 from first-time 8 students.
NEED
TO DO THIS NEXT: Introduced the class presentation project assignment.
Wednesday
11/4
Introduced the use of imported audio,
which we obtained from sampleswap. Looked at bringing in multiple audio
clips and two ways of synchronizing their tempos. Heard #5 and a couple
remaining #4. Reviewed quiz at start of period. STILL NEED TO DO HISTORY
TOPIC 2, assign quiz 2 and test 1 date.
Thursday
11/5
Introduced the class presentation
assignment and set deadline for submission of proposals for next
Thursday, November 12 at start of period - with schedule announced by
the following Tuesday and earliest projects scheduled for one week after
that. Went over the requirements for project 6 and set the deadline as
end of period next Tuesday.
(Neglected to let students know
that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan
in class. Also next time, must start with the info for project 7.)
Friday,
11/6
Work time on #6, due at start of next
session. Last time I had Introduced downloads from Sampleswap.org,
saving files on local drive, importing audio into Logic - Continued
today with methods of synchronizing tempo of sample to Logic (change
Logic tempo or use Pitch/Time Machine) and basic audio editing
functions. Work time on #6. In that we have two holidays coming up... #6
is due next time. We reviewed quiz 2 and did test 1 at end of period.
---
Monday 5/18
Test 1 and other stuff...
Tuesday 5/19
Introduced
the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the
setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did
some individual trouble-shooting. Did explain briefly how to connect
Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually via external midi
instruments. Heard #5 - the sampler/matrix assignment. Reviewed process
of making server backups.
Wednesday 5/20
Need
to hear at least some project 5 today by end of period. Should also
introduce method for making server backup. Joined sampleswap.org and
downloaded samples. Then brought them into Logic. NOTE: Did not do the
server backup demo - next time!
Thursday 5/21
Heard
many #6 assignments, but a few still need to play this for me on
Tuesday. We now know the techniques necessary to do #6a, so go over
that assignment on Tuesday. Look ahead to #7 and see what else needs to
be introduced. (Neglected to let students know that next Thursday
I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class. Also
next time, must start with the info for project 7.)
Friday, 5/22 Work
time on #5, due at end of period. Introduced downloads from
Sampleswap.org, saving files on local drive, importing audio into
Logic, methods of synchronizing tempo of sample to Logic (change Logic
tempo or use Pitch/Time Machine). Work time on #6 for those who
finished #5. Introduced process for backing up to file server. (We are
probably a bit ahead of schedule at this point - but that is not a bad
thing.)
---
Monday 2/16
Presidents Day Holiday - no class
Tuesday 2/17
Introduced
the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the
setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did
some individual trouble-shooting. Did not yet explain how to connect
Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually - do this on Thursday Wednesday 2/18
Heard
assignment #4 from a few remaining students. Test #1 at start of
period. Almost the entire remaining session was used for work time on
assignment #5. Did introduce two brief concepts: bouncing to mp3 and
automating the Output 1-2 fader via automation in the Arrange window -
e.g. to do a fade-out at the end of a piece. Thursday 2/19
#6
is due. (Some still did not play it!) Review how to backup to server.
Review how to connect Reason instruments to Logic individually.
Assigned project 6a. (Neglected to let students know that next
Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in
class. Also next time, must start with the info for project 7.)
Friday, 2/20
Test
1 at beginning of period. Work time on assignment 4 to be heard this
period. Did/re-did the basic introduction to simple editing of the ES1
and assignment #5 for next week. Work time on #5 for those who finished
#4.
(Save for
next week: Introduced the import of audio samples
into Logic audio tracks, and techniques for matching to tempo of
sequence, including use of time and pitch machine - normally this might
have been done this week except we missed the previous Friday for a
holiday.)
---
Monday 11/3
(Test 1 scheduled
for
next class. Still need to do: introduction to importing audio files:
went to sampleswap.org and signed up, downloaded an audio sample,
imported the sample into a Logic audio track.) Today: heard #4. Work
time on #5. Will hear #5 after test this Wednesday. Tuesday 11/4
Introduced
the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the
setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did
some individual trouble-shooting. Did not yet explain how to connect
Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually - do this on
Thursday. Wednesday
11/5
Heard assignment #5 from most
students - the sound design project. (Next time: Introduce basic audio
editing of imported waveforms in Logic and leave some time to work on
this. Introduce the Time and Pitch machine and the basic audio edits. Remind
class of deadline for assignment 6.) Thursday 11/6
Introduce the class project assignment. (Neglected to let
students know that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share
their project plan in class.) Mostly work time on the Logic project
(this quarter only). Introduce time/pitch machine. Friday, 11/7
Test
1 at beginning of period. Work time on assignment 5 to be heard at end
of period. Introduced the import of audio samples into Logic audio
tracks, and techniques for matching to tempo of sequence, including use
of time and pitch machine - and announced the due date for assignment 6
using these techniques. Students who finished assignment 5 early worked
on assignment 6. Heard most assignment 5 projects but ran out of
time to hear the last few - need to hear the remaining students'
assignments next time.

Current TermMonday 11/14
Some work time on #5. About a half dozen are finished and I heard a few of them. Others are not finished and will need some time on Wednesday. Allocate perhaps a half hour with all or part of it at start of period for completion and then hear before period ends.
Introduced audio on Logic: downloading from sampleswap. importing into audio tracks in Logic. synchronizing tempi using align to locators or nearest bar. Next time: look at "factory" in logic and some basic audio editing tools.
Tuesday 11/15
No Music 8 this term
Wednesday 11/16
Finished the information on using audio samples in Logic. This time we looked at the "functions," time/pitch machine, and extracting a small clip from a larger audio source. Went over, in brief, some details from the remaining schedule - including some attention to attendance. on time arrival, and reasons to pick up extra lab time on Fridays.
Did NOT do the third electronic music history topic - perhaps do that next time.
Thursday 11/17
No music 8 this term. Friday 11/18
Fast day - due to surrounding holidays! Heard a few remaining assignment #4. Introduced all of the topic of audio in Logic - except the time/pitch machine. (Did do the functions menu.) Determined that quiz 4 will be due at next session and quiz three at the session after that - did not want to take more lab time for presenting topics this week, so will present the history topic at the next class. Quiz 4 is due a half hour into the period next time - so students who need a half hour to work with the Logic app to answer questions may do so. Announced that assignment #6 is due next class, but there was very little time to work on it - balancing need to have time to finish it with need to have time to work on final project, will determine exactly when to hear it during the next class meeting. Reviewed remaining schedule for the term.
(Admin eval took place during first two hours of class. 23 students were present. Most of the observed portion of the class was the lecture/demonstration on obtaining audio samples from sampleswap.org, basic copyright issues around sampling, how to organize sounds in folders, importing audio into Logic, synchronizing different tempo/rhythm samples, basic sample editor techniques. A portion of the observed session also included - some integrated into the "lecture" and some separate - student lab work with the techniques, followed by additional time to apply the techniques, during which I worked one on one with several students and shared some questions and answers with the group.)
Previous Terms2011 Spring
Monday 5/23
Work time on #5 and on #6
for those finished with #5. Heard playback of #5 from most students,
though need to make the "second pass" on Wednesday. Reminded about the
Wednesday test. Logic and Audio: Editing samples, including the Apple
Loop editor, then basic explanation of the time and pitch machine and
the functions menu including trim, normalize, fades, silence Tuesday 5/24
Class
still needed time to complete #6 so I did not try to hear it - will
plan to do so on Thursday. Demonstrated a sample workflow that started
with large audio source, used Logic to edit out and same smaller
samples, imported edited samples into a Reason sampler. Still need to
confirm and announce the deadline for #7 - perhaps also be specific
about the need to find audio source material for #7. Probably also time
to go over the schedule for the remainder of the term. Wednesday 5/25
test
1. Heard remaining #5. bouncing. Work time on 6. Reminders about a few
upcoming things: assignment #6 in one week, the rough outline of the
plan for quizzes and one more test, beginning to think about the final
project. This was followed by work time to work on #6. Quick overview of
bouncing. Need to do third EM history topic - perhaps next session?
(The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.) Thursday 5/26
Collected
presentation proposals, read and returned them. Posted the presentation
schedule and explained how critical it is to be ready to present on the
assigned day - and that there may not be a second chance for students
who are not ready when assigned. Did one circuit of the room to hear #6.
Only a small percentage had completed it successfully - quite a few thought
thought they were done but had forgotten something. Plan to remind
them at the next session that I will make one final circuit at the end
of the May 31 class. May need to allow for completion of #7 either on
June 2 (original date) or one session later. Reviewed the calendar for
the rest of the term. Friday 5/27
Note this term.
2011 Winter
Monday 2/21
Presidents Holiday - No Monday classes
Tuesday 2/22
Heard #6 from perhaps half of students in attendance. Announced that others are expected to have them ready for playback no later than 15 minutes into the next class. Reminded class that presentation proposals are due one week from today. Reminded class that Logic/Reason are automatically rewired when doing #7, so it will be necessary to assign an audio track (or tracks) in Logic to the reason NNXT and NN19 playing the samples as the sample instruments are created and edited. Reminded class to find and bring audio samples for assignment #7. Discussed some issues with "hot" volume levels in the Logic mixer: setting levels above 0.0 unnecessarily, turning things up where turning other things down would be a better solution, need to disable or automate the outputs of effects.
Wednesday 2/23
Started with reminders about a few upcoming things: assignment #5 due later today, assignment #6 in one week, the rough outline of the plan for quizzes and one more test, beginning to think about the final project. This was followed by work time to finish assignment #5 and time to start #6. Quick overview of the Media:Bin and of bouncing. Heard #5 during latter part of the period - from all but perhaps a tiny handful of remaining students - ask at the next session who still needs to play it back.
Need to do third EM history topic - perhaps next Monday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)
Thursday 2/24
Reviewed workflow for remaining assignment, and posted a brief workflow summary on the web site. Reminded class of due date for presentation proposal at next class meeting. Heard remaining #6. Work time on #7. Mentioned the need to begin planning for the final project.
Friday 2/25
Work time on 5 and 6. Heard 5 from those who hadn't already showed it. Review/expand the audio file download and editing. Assign quiz 4 (out of order - explain). Mention final project and schedule for remainder of term. (Still need to do the detailed introduction of the final project before the end of next class session.) Review cycle, autopunch, replace, etc.
Some have already finished #6! Promised others at least 45 minutes of work time on this project at the next session before playback. Also at next session, MUST introduce final em history topic.
2010 Fall
Monday 11/8
Work time on #5 - deadline
will be next class on Wednesday. Introduced audio samples: acquiring and
downloading from sampleswap, importing into Logic, two methods of beat
matching samples.
Did not go over the edit features of the waveform editor in Logic: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse.
Quiz due at next class with written test 1 one week from today.
Tuesday 11/9
Heard
only four finished #6 assignments. Announced at end of period that
students with unfinished projects needed to use open lab today and/or
Wednesday to finish, since the project is now due at the start of the
period on Thursday.
In
that the presentation proposal is due on Thursday, we went over
individual proposals-in-progress today and I gave feedback and
suggestions on them.
Did
not do the run through of the workflow for converting samples to
sampler instruments as needed for the remaining assignment 7 - need to
do this still.
Wednesday 11/10
Reviewed
quiz 2. Re-announced next Monday's test. Introduce more audio editing
techniques (normalize, fade in/out, silence, reverse, trim). Hear #5.
Work time on #6.
Need to do third EM history topic - perhaps next Wednesday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)
Thursday 11/11
Collected
presentation proposals. Reviewed and returned them, some with request
for revision by next Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals
received. Went over the workflow for doing assignment 7. Work time on
#7. Heard additional #6 - though a few were not yet ready still. Too
many absences today.
Friday 11/12
Veterans Day Holiday - we're playing catch-up now! (See previous term for old class activities.)
2010 Spring
Monday 5/24
Heard the remain project 5
examples. (Perhaps one or two need to remind me that theirs are not done
yet.) Introduced the pitch/time machine and quickly went over the edit
features of the waveform editor in Logic: normalize, fade in, fade out,
trim, reverse. Did the first written test.
Next time I should still go over the exact process for synchronizing two audio samples with different tempi.
Tuesday 5/25
Heard
only four finished #6 assignments. Announced at end of period that
students with unfinished projects needed to use open lab today and/or
Wednesday to finish, since the project is now due at the start of the
period on Thursday.
In that the presentation proposal is due on
Thursday, we went over individual proposals-in-progress today and I gave
feedback and suggestions on them.
Did not do the run through of
the workflow for converting samples to sampler instruments as needed for
the remaining assignment 7 - need to do this still.
Wednesday 5/26
Went
through the steps to import and synchronize two audio samples with
different tempos. Also showed how to save a copy of a section of a
sample as a separate file and import it.
Need to do second EM history topic - perhaps next Monday? (The assignment based on audio is due next Wednesday.)
Thursday 5/27
Collected
presentation proposals. Reviewed and returned them, some with request
for revision by next Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals
received. Went over the workflow for doing assignment 7. Work time on
#7. Heard additional #6 - though a few were not yet ready still. Too
many absences today.
Friday 5/28
Did
the full explanation/review of importing and editing audio into Logic.
(Did not necessarily explain all "functions" options - did do normalize,
fade in/out, reverse.) Did the third EM history subject and assigned
the take-home quiz #3 as being due next Friday. Work time on #6.
2010 Winter
Monday 2/22
Introduced more audio
editing techniques: normalize, fade in, fade out, trim, reverse. Looked
at changing sample length using the Time/Pitch Machine, and by using the
automatic feature to match to nearest bar or to markers.
Did
test 2. Heard assignment 5 from all who were finished - a few were not
yet finished.
Tuesday 2/23
Heard
#6. Intro'd material for #7
Wednesday 2/24
Did
not record notes on this class. Need to do EM history - next time?
Thursday
11/12
Collected presentation proposals.
Reviewed and returned them, some with request for revision by next
Tuesday. Posted schedule based on proposals received. Working on #7.
Friday
2/26
More or less back
on track with the MW class. Introduced how to obtain and import audio
files. Editing them to match beats; also looked at normalize, fade
in/out, silence. Heard assignment 5. Did third history topic and
assigned quiz 3 as due next week. Assignment 6 due next week as well -
though was not specific in class about the time at which it is due. Did
NOT yet explain final project or announce (revised?) schedule for last
class meeting and finals
2009 Fall
Monday 11/9
Did the second EM history
presentation with quiz 2 due at the start of next class. Some work time
on project 6, with deadline set for END of next class. Posted but did
not announce remaining quiz/test schedule. On Wed: start with quiz
review, then work time on #6, hear #6 at end of period.
Ironically,
while the Friday class is now going to have to work hard to finish all
work this term, the MW class is probably a bit ahead of schedule...
Tuesday 11/10
Work
time on #6 which was due today but which I will instead hear at start
of session on Thursday. Did a lot of individual troubleshooting on this
project today. (Attendance was poor today!) Described final project and
explained time line. (There was a question about the quiz we have not
yet had.) Wednesday 11/11
Work
time on #6. Though I had originally (and optimistically) thought that
it would be done today, now we'll hear it at start of class on Monday.
Also announced TEST for next Monday. Explained how to bounce to MP3.
Explained how to deconstruct a large sample (e.g. - a piece of music)
into separate samples, import and beat match them.
Also on
Monday, need to introduce Final Project and prepare for one more
history session either next Wednesday (best) or the following Monday.
Thursday 11/12
Did
the
class survey of "what will your presentation topic be?" with feedback.
Heard remaining project 6A. Explained the most basic techniques
needed for assignment 7 (e.g. excerpt small sound in Logic) - might
want to look briefly at some other editing, etc. possibilities next
time (e.g. - pitch mapping, edits in the sampler, overview of changes
in Logic such as fades, etc.).
Assignment
7 is due on 11/19. Revisions to proposals due on 11/17. Need to post
presentation schedule on 11/17 at end of period and then review final
project guidelines again.
Friday 11/13
NO CLASS DUE TO HOLIDAY
---
Monday 2/23
Introduced audio sampling
issues. Importing audio files into Logic audio tracks. Synchronizing
them to the project by alterning project tempo and/or using Time/Pitch
machine. Went over basic "functions" in T/P Machine. Signed up for
SampleSwap and downloaded samples.
Did NOT hear assignment 5
since 1/3 of class not yet finished. Announced: 1. #5 due at START of
class on Wednesay, Wednesday a work day on #6, #6 due next Monday.
Tuesday 2/24
Did
the class survey of "what will your presentation topic be?" with
feedback. Work time on #6a which is due today. It turned out that only
a couple students had finished 6a, so I delayed the deadline to THE START OF CLASS ON THURSDAY with no option for delay. (Some students can play #6 at the same time.) After
that on Thursday we will look at how to create, edit, and use samples
to build instruments in the NN19 from our own samples.
Wednesday 2/25
Introduced
methods to import audio into Logic audio tracks and edit them in the
waveform editor: time and pitch machine, normalize, reverse, fade
in/out, etc. Signed everyone up for sampleswap and went over how to
download audio files. Introduced assignment 6. (Built on earlier audio
editing: went over how to select a small audio "bit" from a larger
audio file, save it as a separate file, and edit. Need to hear the
remaining project 5 examples.) Thursday 2/26
Hear
#6a - some still did not finish. Demo building NN19 instrument from
imported/edited samples. Need to deal with looping the samples, etc.
next time. Work time on #7.
Friday 2/27
Heard
most of the remaining assignment 5 examples. Used much of period for
work on assignment 6, after explaining the basics of importing, beat
matching, etc. samples in Logic. Returned test #1 and quick reviewed
the answers. Announced the reversal of quizzes #3 and #4 and announced
that #4 is due next week. Assignment #6 will be due next time, but it
is likely that very few will be ready when class starts.
Need to
do the remain EM history topic next week and assign quiz, announce
final project, and announce remaining test and schedule.
---
Monday 11/10
Veterans Day Holiday - no classes. Tuesday 11/11
Introduced
Rewire: how to start and connect the progams, creating channel strips
for input from Reason's mixer or individual instruments, etc. Announced
assignment 6. Delayed - again! - playback of assignment 1 until START
of period on Thursday. Wednesday 11/12
Introduced
methods to import audio into Logic audio tracks and edit them in the
waveform editor: time and pitch machine, normalize, reverse, fade
in/out, etc. Signed everyone up for sampleswap and went over how to
download audio files. Introduced assignment 6. (Built on earlier audio
editing: went over how to select a small audio "bit" from a larger
audio file, save it as a separate file, and edit. Need to hear the
remaining project 5 examples.) Thursday 11/13
Work
on Rewire project. Each student described his/her presentation
proposal.(Demonstrated how to pipe audio from individual Reason
instruments into separate audio tracks in Logic. Some final work time
on assignment 6, most of which I heard before the end of class. (But
some still to go.) Need to comment on remaining assignment and revised
deadline. Provided feedback on project proposals, including requirement
that some resubmit revised proposals by next Tuesday.) Friday 11/14
Heard
remaining assignment 5 examples. Used most of period for work on
assignment 6. It appears that almost everyone has finished it -
announced that I'll hear it at start of period next time. Did final EM
history presentation and assigned quiz 3 for next Friday. Discussed the
fact that we have only two more class meetings - and outlined the plan
for the remaining sessions.
(Finished assignment 5 but did not hear it - will hear this project as the start of the period
next week. Did cover the import and basic editing of audio samples
including beat matching. Had some work time on #6 - which is now due at
the end of the period next week. Did basic em history on RCA, Moog, and Buchla - need to play examples next week.)

Went over the final project, including a reminder about date and time. Work time on assignment #7 - originally due today but most were not finished. Must hear it at next session.
Wednesday 3/2
Heard only a VERY few assignment 6. Final project requirements are now fully disclosed - students know deadline for playback and the necessity of starting soon and working efficiently to finish it. Went over the time/pitch machine.
NEXT time: must present remaining topic and assign quiz 4.
Thursday 3/3
Plan: Hear #7. Finalize presentation schedule and proposed topics. Work time on final project.

15 minutes of work time on quiz 4 to finish it up, followed by quiz review. 45 minutes work time on #6 before grading it. Introduce the final history topic and clarify that quiz 3 is due at start of period next week. Go over final project requirements and the details of our remaining schedule.
2010 Fall

Tuesday 11/16
Mostly
work time on #7, which is due at next class. Still some #6 work to see.
Went over final project and schedule for remainder of the term.
Wednesday

A few people showed up who had missed test
#1 on Monday! I let them take it today. Much of the period was spent
working on #6 which was due today - but many were not done. Went over a

do the third EM topic this week - Must do this on Monday. Must assign
BOTH REMAINING QUIZZES that day, likely due the following Monday, though
Wednesday would also be possible. Introduced the final project format
and reviewed the rough outline of our calendar for the remainder of the
term.
Thursday 11/18
Reviewed
final project stuff, reminded about need to submit required revisions
to presentation proposals, projected the presentation schedule, reviewed
class schedule for remainder of term including date/time for final exam
session. Heard #7 - a number probably still need to be reviewed.
Friday 11/19
Second-to-last regular class meeting! Lots to do!
Went
over remaining schedule: this class, two weeks from today (last regular
class), then final exam session. Quizzes 3 and 4 due at start of period
next week. We'll do test 2 at end of final exam session. Next session
devoted almost entirely to work on final project - exception being quiz
review. Did third EM history topic.
Heard all pre-6 assignments
but decided to NOT hear #6 today so that no time would be taken away
from getting started on the final project. MUST hear #6 at the final
class session in two weeks! Also at that session, probably give people
about 15 minutes at the start of the period in case they need to use the
Logic program to review material for quiz 4 questions.

record MIDI control of Reason instruments. A lot of individual work
time. Will not do 6a/7 this term, but will incorporate these techniques
into final project this term. Individual troubleshooting. Outlined the
