Monday 9/21
Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of greensheet, web site sign ups, etc. Then... studio configuration problems ensued - so we did not get started on Garage Band...
Tuesday 9/22
Technical problems with studio! Did not do: Basic Reason intro: the rack, the empty rack, adding the mixer and Subtractor via the Create menu or selecting from preset Subtractor sounds and the concept of editing the Subractor (but only in the most cursory way). Did not play the Subtractor from the keyboard.
Wednesday 19/23
introduced Garage Band: adding regions, looping - showed pan/volume and master volume, edit/solo, etc. Did a quick intro to using keyboard to control sounds. Did not do:  track edit screens, quantize, pitch correction, etc. Still need to look at adding effects to software synth tracks.  Make the Garage Band project assignment and announce due date one week from today. (Some class time will be available next week to work on this.)
Thursday 4/9
Introduced some Subtractor basics - up through oscillator. Probably need to back up and do redrum...

Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of greensheet, web site sign ups, etc. Then introduced Garage Band: adding regions, looping - showed pan/volume. Did not do: recording from keyboard and copying, edit screens, solo/mute, etc.

Basic Reason intro: the rack, the empty rack, adding the mixer and Subtractor via the Create menu. Went over selecting from preset Subtractor sounds and the concept of editing the Subractor (but only in the most cursory way). Played the Subtractor from the keyboard.
Wednesday 14/8

Also mentioned the overall control from the transport window, and the options available from the popup menu. Did not yet go over how to add patterns to the sequencer, or how to record drum sounds directly into the sequencer with keyboard input.)

Work time on the Redrum module. Went over adding a second redrum, working with the pattern lane, recording Redrum directly into a track. Then we started with the Subtractor: oscillators (waveform and frequency controls), noise generator (color) and the amplitude envelope. Introduced the Redrum assignment. Did initial introduction to the Subtractor module, but did not explain much more than the oscillators and the most basic features of generic ADSR envelopes. (Notes: Contrary to this description we just barely did the pattern lane - need to do this next time. The Subtractor intro was on Tuesday did not yet include anything on actually modifying sounds.)

Tuesday, 9/29
COURSE CORRECTION! I started with Subtractor last time (just looked at oscillators and noise generator) when I should have started with Redrum. So... Today I suspended coverage of the Subtractor and instead introduced the Redrum. Pretty much finished it and made the first Redrum assignment due one week from today on Tuesday, October 6.

(OLD: Work time on the ReDrum assignment that is due on Thursday. Some students appear to have finished, but more seem like they'll need at least a half hour to complete projects on Thursday. (Also a very basic intro to Subtractor module: reviewed Oscillator and Noise generator and controls of waveform and frequency. Next time continue on to filters, ADSRs, etc.))
Wednesday, 9/30
Moved on into Logic, looking at basic plugin synths and then loops - essentially a quick tour of how to access all of them, but without details of each synthesis method. Learned how to change the inst assigned to the inst tracks. (DID NOT: Went over a model set of steps for recording: first drums, check for timing, ) add another track, add loops, etc. Hear Garage Band assignments next week since we were delayed on the first day of class by technical issues. (For next time - how to spread an instrument across multiple tracks, etc. and much more Logic stuff.
Thursday, 10/1
More basic editing on the Subtractor: finished the filter, went over ADSR concepts, and applied the ADSR to both volume and filter frequency. (Due to confusion about the need to enter Redrum patterns in the a pattern lane in the sequencer - half the class didn't do this - the deadline for this assignment was delayed until NEXT TUESDAY AT START OF PERIOD.)

Announced the assignment #1 business - previous music 51 students say "I was in music 51" and new students show me a project in week 6.

Tuesday: need perhaps 30 minutes work time on #2?
Friday, 10/2
(Almost the s)ame as MW class. Actually both classes are a bit behind the planned schedule, though  this is a more significant issue with the Friday class. Friday class was introduced to Logic as the MW class - the arrange window, selecting instruments, recording, some basic editing in the arrange window and the piano roll, adding tracks, importance of click track. Mentioned that assignment 2 will be due at end of the period next week, though this may be a bit aggressive. (But may have to do it due to later friday holidays.) Elements of the project that I did  NOT cover include a) spreading a percussion part across multiple tracks and b) adding audio loops. Must do these at start of period.

Also a very basic intro to Subtractor module: reviewed Oscillator and Noise generator; started with filter including HP, BP, LP (but not notch), the effect of the frequency slider, the meaning of "subtractive." Need to go on and deal with resonance and ADSR control next time.

Monday 10/5
Including Audio/Real instrument loops in Logic - brief explanation. Did a very basic description (but only using the "+" button) of how to split a part across tracks - NEED TO COVER HOW TO USE THE SAME INSTRUMENT PART FOR THIS... Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.

Briefly mentioned that the above techniques would be used in assignment #2 but did not cover assignment details nor the due date.

DID NOT COVER the three ways to re-use a region in logic: option-drag, loop, and alias.

Heard SOME Garageband (#1) assignments from rows 1, 2, and 3. Next time need to hear rows 4, 5, and 6 - and anyone who "took a pass."
Tuesday 10/6
Since deadline of assignment #2 was delayed until today, heard project #2 at start of class. Finished the main features of the Subtractor including LFOs and a few odds and ends...BUT did not yet explain frequency modulation between two audio oscillators - need to do this on Thursday. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 10/7
Portions of period were work time on project 2 - which is due at the on Monday. Went over hte three ways to reuse regions: loop, copy, alias. DID NOT: Introduced track automation including creating a master volume fader.
Thursday 10/8
Introduced frequency modulation synthesis using the two Subtractor oscillators, and explained the concept of sidebands - this took more than half of the period. Then a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors). (Next time probably need to introduce use of inline effects)

Monday 10/6
Finished listening to the last batch of Garage Band projects. Introduced the use of the audio tracks and how to bring in regions from the Loop Browser. Introduced simple quantizing. Also introduced methods for backing up files to USB memory stick and server. Described assignment #2 and announced the due date as next Monday at the start of class.
Tuesday 10/7

Finished the main features of the Subtractor including ADSR control of filters and use of LFO. Did not ntroduce frequency modulation between two audio oscillators. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 10/8
Most of period was work time on project 2. Briefly demoed the very basic interface to track automation and briefly described how to make duplicate tracks that use the same instruments. Next time (Monday): hear assignment 2, review/introduce techniques for project 3, perhaps do first topic if time.
Thursday 10/9
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at next class) Take a quick look at some remaining "minor" controls on the subtractor: portamento, the mod envelope, the second filter and interconnecting the filters, and the velocity controllers at the bottom right. - WILL HEAR ASSIGNMENT 3 AT START OF NEXT CLASS.
Friday 10/10
Introduce the use of "apple loops" on the audio tracks; several ways to repeat them, particularly the use of "loop" features. Demonstrate how to back up files to the server. (Should review this next week.) Do the first electronic music history topic and assign the first quiz as due next Friday. Introduced basic automation in the arrange window. Reminded of the differences and incompatablities beween audio and software instrument tracks. DID NOT PLAY BACK ASSIGNMENT 2 - IT IS NOW DUE AT THE START OF CLASS ON OCT 17.

General Notes for Week 4
  • This week in all classes we need to go over how to back up to the server. Need to start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz. Quiz on FM for Music 8? Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.

  • Also - did not explain the "Logic Basics" instrument business in the Friday class (or the MW class) last week. Need to go over that and incorporate it into assignment 3.
Monday 10/12
Was scheduled to hear most recent project (#2), but put this off until start of next class. (DID NOT YET go over setting up the master volume fader via Output 1-2.) Went over basic track automation of volume and pan, reviewed the better method of adding multiple tracks with the same "inst." - also did the very basic introduction using the Logic Basics instruments.(NEED TO: Started EM History by doing precursor including the Singing Arc and the Teleharmonium. Stopped before doing the Theremin.)

Weather-related power failure - class canceled. We are now one day behind original schedule in Music 8.

Heard some remaining project #3 examples today, with a few to hear on Thursday - but there are perhaps four to hear at start of period on THURSDAY. (There may be others that did not get recorded - if so, be sure to ask them about it later.)

Work time on project 3. Project 3 is due at end of period today - but only a very few were ready due to our compressed schedule. Those who did not play today must play back at the END (?) of the next class period.  Save for next time: introduction of EM history topic. HEARD ABOUT FOUR #3 PROJECTS AT START OF PERIOD.  Work session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects (serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to samplers?)
Friday 10/15
Explained how to control/edit velocity of individual tracks that share the same inst. (DID NOT DO: Finish the first EM History topic by covering Theremin - the assigned/explained the first take-home quiz that is due next Friday at start of period.) Did a VERY basic introduction to Logic effects/inserts - showing how to add them, how to bypass them, how to add more than one, and very briefly demoed a couple of reverbs - did not cover any particular effects in detail. Test 1 tentatively scheduled for two weeks from today - the same day that quiz 2 is due - on May 15. This entails doing the second history topic next week. (This may need to be delayed...)

Heard most recent project (#2). Introduced basic automation of volume and panning in the Arrange window. Showed but did not explain at all the effects of automation on the mixer. Talked about but did not do - the automation of parameters on individual instruments. (Today it was important to get #2 done, hear it, and start working on #3 - since we're behind the Friday class.) need to do history #1 on Wednesday.
Tuesday 1/27
Hear remaining project #3 until start of period today. Explained/demoed the inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they do - a quick overview. Heard project 3 near the end of the period. Monday 10/19
Introduce the addition of effects inserts in the Logic mixer. Went over how to add, bypass, and select specific presets, how to view on mixer or in arrange window. Then DID NOT hear #3. Too many were too far from being done - or else I had previously confused the class about the deadline. We had a talk about the importance of "getting it done first and making it better later." Deadline for #3 extended to START of Wednesday class, and informed class that they must use open lab if they were not finished at end of today's session.

Monday 10/26
Will present the first EM topic next time with quiz to follow at Monday class and then first test very soon thereafter - also need to do the second topic as soon as next Monday. Work time on #4 with projects due at end of period. Did VERY quick and cursory intro to editing the ES1, though no more than pointing out that there are control and where to find them, and how to save an instrument. In order to stay on track with Friday class (which moves ahead now, but falls back later) need to do the intro to editing the ES1 very soon.

After hearing the last of #4 we had some work time on project 5 which is now due at the END of the period next class. Introduced the use of the NN19, both to bring in pre-set sample instruments and to build an instrument from individual samples. Still did not assign the quiz! Need to do that and perhaps demo the NN-XT next time - though one or both could wait a session if time is needed for work on #5.  (Save for later:  basic introduction to Rewire -  stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then  individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)
Wednesday 10/28
Heard some remaining #4 projects (automation and effects). Covered the ES1 sufficiently for project #5, which is due at the end of class next Monday. Did not do the EM history session yet - intentionally delayed it until next Monday... but really need to do it then. Will need work time on #5 on Monday, and could delay deadline until start of Wednesday class if necessary to do EM history.

Should also cover quantizing and loop recording in a more methodical manner. Also: recording mixer automation, possibly automation of values other than pan/volume.

Project 6 is next week - maybe... I did not announce it or go over required techniques yet. Need to do this next week on Tuesday. (STILL NEED TO DO THE QUIZ.) DID: introduce the NN-XT. How to do layers, including velocity layers. Heard #5 from most students but a few need to be checked next Tuesday. Introduced the CV Splitter/merger, mostly in the context of splitting. Very briefly pointed out the existence of the audio equivalent module. Only checked a couple #1 assignments. Need to follow up on this next time.

(Did not yet do the basic introduction to Rewire. Rewired audio from Reason into the Mixer in Logic - from the Reason Mixer (stereo) and from the Reason Interface (individual channel per instrument).

Introduced Rewire today - and did the whole thing including routing mixed and individual audio from Reason to Logic and routing Arrange track control info to Reason instruments. Consolidated old assignments 6 and 6A into current 6, but need to formally announce it to class next time.

There are still projects that I have not heard: some #5 and all #1 from first-time 8 students.

Thursday 11/5
Introduced the class presentation assignment and set deadline for submission of proposals for next Thursday, November 12 at start of period - with schedule announced by the following Tuesday and earliest projects scheduled for one week after that. Went over the requirements for project 6 and set the deadline as end of period next Tuesday.

Heard assignment #5 from most students - the sound design project. (Next time: Introduce basic audio editing of imported waveforms in Logic and leave some time to work on this. Introduce the Time and Pitch machine and the basic audio edits. Remind class of deadline for assignment 6.)

Work time on #6. Though I had originally (and optimistically) thought that it would be done today, now we'll hear it at start of class on Monday. Also announced TEST for next Monday. Explained how to bounce to MP3. Explained how to deconstruct a large sample (e.g. - a piece of music) into separate samples, import and beat match them.

Also on Monday, need to introduce Final Project and prepare for one more history session either next Wednesday (best) or the following Monday.
Thursday 11/12
Did the class survey of "what will your presentation topic be?" with feedback. Heard remaining project 6A. Explained the most basic techniques needed for assignment 7 (e.g. excerpt small sound in Logic) - might want to look briefly at some other editing, etc. possibilities next time (e.g. - pitch mapping, edits in the sampler, overview of changes in Logic such as fades, etc.).

Assignment 7 is due on 11/19. Revisions to proposals due on 11/17. Need to post presentation schedule on 11/17 at end of period and then review final project guidelines again.

Did NOT hear assignment 5 since 1/3 of class not yet finished. Announced: 1. #5 due at START of class on Wednesay, Wednesday a work day on #6, #6 due next Monday.

Did the class survey of "what will your presentation topic be?" with feedback. Work time on #6a which is due today. It turned out that only a couple students had finished 6a, so I delayed the deadline to THE START OF CLASS ON THURSDAY with no option for delay. (Some students can play #6 at the same time.) After that on Thursday we will look at how to create, edit, and use samples to build instruments in the NN19 from our own samples.

Mostly work time on first rewire assignment. Introduced External tracks to record MIDI control of Reason instruments. A lot of individual work time. Will not do 6a/7 this term, but will incorporate these techniques into final project this term. Individual troubleshooting. Outlined the final project briefly. NEED TO: do detailed description of final project, hear the rewire project, return the proposals and schedule them.

Today: DID NOT hear #6. Discuss final project. EM topic #3 and announce quiz 3. (Still need to review/introduce loop/overdub/punch recording techniques.)
Thursday 11/20
Briefly demonstrated the process of turning any sample into a sound for a NNXT or NN19 instrument. Stated that this (assignment 7) would not be a separate project this quarter, but would instead be incorporated into the final project, with assignment 7 credit for doing this. AGAIN did not hear 6 - will hear at start of period on TUESDAY. Announced presentation schedule - which begins on TUESDAY.
