Week 1


9/22-9/26

Monday 9/22
Did the usual getting-started stuff: quick review of greensheet, web site sign ups, etc. Then introduced Garage Band: adding regions, looping. Did not do: recording from keyboard and copying, etc.
Tuesday 9/23
Basic Reason intro: the rack, the empty rack, adding the mixer and Subtractor via the Create menu. Went over selecting from present Subtractor sounds. Played the Subtractor from the keyboard. (Did not do: Went over essentially all of the front panel controls of ReDrum for creating and modifying patterns. Also mentioned the overall control from the transport window, and the options available from the popup menu. Did not yet go over how to add patterns to the sequencer, or how to record drum sounds directly into the sequencer with keyboard input.)
Wednesday 9/24
Completed Garage Band intro including editing, effects, panning/volume, etc. More Garage Band including how to record music played from the keyboard, a quick look at the editing window, and a quick look at adding effects to software synth tracks. Explained the mute/solo/etc controls or the drop-down volume and pan controls. Make the Garage Band project assignment and announce due date one week from today. (Some class time will be available next week to work on this.)
Thursday 9/25
Work time on the Redrum module. Went over adding a second redrum, working with the pattern lane, recording Redrum directly into a track. Then we started with the Subtractor: oscillators (waveform and frequency controls), noise generator (color) and the amplitude envelope. Introduced the Redrum assignment. Did initial introduction to the Subtractor module, but did not explain much more than the oscillators and the most basic features of generic ADSR envelopes. (Notes: Contrary to this description we just barely did the pattern lane - need to do this next time. The Subtractor intro was on Tuesday did not yet include anything on actually modifying sounds.)
Friday 9/26
Same a MW class but did explain the mute/solo/etc controls or the drop-down volume and pan controls. Announced first assignment and deadline.

Monday, 9/29
Work time on the Garage Band assignment which is due on Wednesday at end of period. Very basic introduction to Logic - the Arrange and Transport windows. How to assign a plugin to an INST track. Very basic look at selecting a sound from one plugin.
Tuesday, 9/30
Work time on the ReDrum assignment that it due on Thursday. Some students appear to have finished, but more seem like they'll need at least a half hour to complete projects on Thursday. Then very basic intro to Subtractor module.
Wednesday, 10/1
Moved on into Logic, looking at basic plugin synths and then loops - essentially a quick tour of how to access all of them, but without details of each synthesis method. Learned how to change the inst assigned to the inst tracks and how to spread a part for one instrument across several tracks. Next assignment was barely introduced. Hear about half of the Garage Band assignments - the rest at the next class.
Thursday, 10/2
More basic editing on the Subtractor. Heard assignment 2 (yes, 2 - holding off the Logic assignment for later and having everyone do it.) In Subtractor we thoroughly covered the Oscillators and Noise Generator. We covered basic ADSR concepts using the amplifier, and we looked at filter frequency and resonance.

Monday 4/ 21
Finished listening to the last batch of Garage Band projects. Introduced the use of the audio tracks and how to bring in regions from the Loop Browser. Also introduced methods for backing up files to USB memory stick and server. Described assignment #2 and announced the due date as next Monday at the start of class.
Tuesday 4/22
Introduced frequency modulation between two audio oscillators and introduced "harmonic" and the harmonic content of waveforms. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 4/23
Work time on project 2 - some will need up to 30 minutes of extra time next Monday. Introduced quantizing.
Thursday 4/24
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at next class) Took a quick look at some remaining "minor" controls on the subtractor: portamento, the mod envelope, the second filter and interconnecting the filters, and the velocity controllers at the bottom right.

Monday 4/28
Introduced how to reassign tracks in Logic - multiple tracks with same instrument, creating new/additional instruments, etc. Also covered the three ways to repeat a region: loop, copy, alias.
Tuesday 4/29
Explained/demoed the inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they do. Heard project 3 near the end of the period.
Wednesday 4/30
Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens. Did the first electronic music history topic (through Theremin) and assigned quiz 1 as due next Monday at START of period. Since little time remained to work on projects, the next project will be due at the END of the period on Monday rather than at the beginning.
Thursday 5/1
Primarily work session on assignment 4. Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason.

Went over: bouncing tracks, basic addition of effects inserts, volume/pan reviewed, assignment 4 introduced, work time on assignment 3... Did not hear #3 at end of period...
Tuesday 5/6
Introduced the Matrix sequencer, with control over the Subtractor. Barely introduced the NN19 sampler, showing how to load default instruments from the disk. Need to show how to add any sample and adjust the settings/etc on the sampler manually.
Wednesday 5/7
Heard assignment #3 today - a few students still need to play them, but they need to remind instructor. Partially a work day on project 4 that is due next Monday - at the END of the class. Electronic music history #2 lecture - and quiz 2 assigned for next Monday.
Thursday 5/8
Introduced the creation of custom sample instruments on the NN19.

Heard some assignment 3 examples - need to hear remaining on Wednesday. Collected and reviewed quiz 2 in prep for test on 2/19. Introduced the basics of the Track mixer, gave an overview of plug-in synth modules. Work time on next project.
Tuesday 5/13
Primarily work time on project 5 which is due at the start of the period next class. Mentioned that it is possible to bring in audio samples from instruments besides the NN19, the Dr. Rex sounds for example. Briefly gave an introduction/overview on the CV mixer/merger.
Wednesday 5/14
Returned quiz 2 and reminded that test 2 is next Monday 5/19 at our next class meeting. Also, assignment 5 is due next Wednesday 5/21. For this reason, much of today's class was lab time. Slightly more detailed description of plugin editing of ES1 and EFM1. Some look at the mixer later in the period.
Thursday 5/15
Project 5 was due today. Did a very, very basic introduction to Rewire and Reason/Logic.

Monday 5/19
Test 1 scheduled for today. Did a very brief introduction to importing audio files: went to sampleswap.org and signed up, downloaded an audio sample, imported the sample into a Logic audio track.
Tuesday 5/20
Introduced the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did some individual trouble-shooting. Did not yet explain how to connect Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually - do this on Thursday.
Wednesday 5/21
Heard assignment #5 - the sound design project. Introduced basic audio editing of imported waveforms in Logic and left some time to work on this. Introduce the Time and Pitch machine and the basic audio edits. Remind class of deadline for assignment 6.
Thursday 5/22
Plan: let students know that next Tuesday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class. Mostly work time on next project.

Tuesday 5/27
Each student gave a brief report on their current plans for the presentation project, with due date for the written proposal coming up soon. Went over how to create multiple Rewire objects in the environment to map control info from Logic Rewire tracks to multiple rack modules in Reason. Heard many students' assignment 6 - some still need to be played next time. Decided to not do assignment 6A this quarter (assignment has also been revised). Assignment #7 due next week.
Wednesday 5/28
Built on earlier audio editing: went over how to select a small audio "bit" from a larger audio file, save it as a separate file, and edit. Heard the remaining project 5 example.
Thursday 5/29
Demonstrated how to pipe audio from individual Reason instruments into separate audio tracks in Logic. Some final work time on assignment 6, most of which I heard before the end of class. (But some still to go.) Need to comment on remaining assignment and revised deadline. Provided feedback on project proposals, including requirement that some resubmit revised proposals by next Tuesday.

A lot of individual work time. Will not do 6a this term. Individual troubleshooting. Heard assignment 6 - though there might be a few left to play. Outlined the final project.
Wednesday 6/4
Quiz 4 due today. (Will present for #3 next week followed by Wednesday due date.). As part of review, introduce loop/overdub/punch recording techniques.
