Current Term

Monday 5/20
  • Reminders about the quiz due on Wednesday.
  • Reminder about the assignment due Wednesday, but also mentioned that not everyone will necessarily finish by then.
  • Went over the basics of assignment #5: how to save individual settings files, how to create five tracks, basic setup (init) for the ES1.
  • Went over how to control peaks in Logic tracks: change track level manually, automate volume, bypass and effect, manually change effect gain on the effect module, automate control of the effect's parameters.
  • Heard remaining #4
  • Work on #5
  • If time: autodrop/punch, cycle, replace modes: got only as far as explaining low latency mode button and cycle button. Need to still cover autodrop/punch and replace.
Tuesday 5/21
  • Only two had finished #5 so most of the period was devoted to work time on this assignment, and its deadline was moved back to this coming Thursday.
  • Introduced Rewire, going as far as bringing Reasons mixer output into the Logic mixer and bringing individual Reason channels to Reason's interface and then into separate Logic channel strips.
  • One student still had to do the test.

Wednesday 5/22
  • Turned in and reviewed quiz #2

  • Finished the coverage of the lower right buttons in the transport window: low latency, cycle, autopunch, replace, etc.
  • Work time on #5, with a hopeful plan to finish today, but...

Notes:

  • Perhaps 1/3 did finish #5 and I checked those assignments. Those who did not were told to come to TTh class and use open lab to ensure that they are "virtually finished" before next Wednesday's class.
  • Mentioned that I will return graded quizzes at the start of next class so there will be time to review them before that day's test.
  • Did not start the sampling unit, so that assignment's due date may need to be delayed a bit, depending upon when I get to the topic and how much time is available to work on it.

2012 Spring


Monday 5/21

Heard all remaining #4. Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Returned quiz 1. Announced test for this next Wednesday. Announced delay of deadline for #5 until next week Wednesday. (Would have been Monday, except Monday there is no school due to Memorial Day holiday.)

Next: Need to begin work on finding and incorporating audio samples in Logic. Consider doing a bit of this on Wednesday - but it will more likely need to wait until next week given that Wednesday is the only remaining time for students to complete assignment #5, which is due at the following session next week.

Tuesday 5/22
Due to a pressing IPBT deadline and other factors, I originally considered cancelling today's class. Instead, we did meet. Most of the class time was used for lab work on assignment 6 (rewire) which is due next week. I explained the second part of the rewire equation, namely how to connect Logic control to Reason instruments using the external midi device channels in Logic. I also announced that the test will be next Tuesday.

STILL NEED TO INTRODUCE THE CLASS PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT THIS WEEK!
Wednesday 5/23
Test #1 was today. Discussed the upcoming schedule challenges - next week Monday is a holiday and on Wednesday I am to be at the all-day IPBT meeting. We discussed the probability that next Wednesday will be a full lab day only, that #5 will be due the following Monday and #6 at the very next class on the next Wednesday. I also mentioned that much of this is still somewhat tentative and that I would post updates to the class web site.

We did a quick intro to using sampleswap and bringing samples into Logic. Class signed up for sampleswap and saw me download sounds to folders in my folder. I brought a sound into Logic via the drag and drop method. We quickly looked at two methods to aligning the the sample with the pre-existing tracks in Logic. Mentioned that these techniques would be used in assignment #6, but did not actually look at the assignment guidelines with the class.
Thursday 5/24
Introduced the class presentation assignment. Went over the details of the project and the proposal and assigned a due date of Tuesday, June 5 for proposals. Heard a small number of assignment 5 examples, but there are more to hear next time. Announced an official due date next week for assignment #6, but recognized that it will likely be delayed because a) many were still working on 5 today and b) TEST 1 is scheduled for next week also.

2012 Winter

Monday 2/20

Presidents Day - no class

Tuesday 2/21
Introduced class presentation assignment and announced that proposals are due on Thursday, March 1. Work time on #5 for those who were not yet done with it - heard projects of those who have finished it. Began Rewire introduction. Got as far as connecting hardware device stereo to Logic mixer and then connecting two reason instruments directly to the hardware device and then the hardware device to separate input channels on the Logic mixer.
Wednesday 2/22
Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Announced that test 1 will be next Monday. Work time on assignment 5 (ES 1 sounds) which is due at the next class - same day as test 1. Very basic introduction to sampleswap: getting an account, finding sounds, moving them to computer, organizing them in your folder, inserting in Logic. Still need to do the main work of editing sounds in Logic and beat matching them and so forth. Revised due dates and deadlines as per today's announcement on the class web site home page.
Thursday 2/23
Introduced the remaining Rewire info related to recording note data in Logic to be played back by Reason instruments. Heard Sampler/Matrix assignments.
Friday, 2/24
A busy day! Reviewed quiz 2. Returned graded quiz #1 and #2. Did test 1 after the break. Introduced editing the ES1 synth sounds for the next assignment. Announced its due date for next week. Work time on #5. Heard remaining #4 - except for a handful who were not ready on the "first pass," and I ran out of time before completing the second pass.
2011 Fall

Monday 11/7

Reviewed Quiz 2. Reminder about test on Wednesday. Work time to finish #4. Did NOT hear #4 - start of next class. Work time on #5 for those who finish. May need to delay deadline for #5 by one day - will see how the class is doing on Wednesday. (Note that test 1 is that day, too.)

Largely work time on #6, due next week. Took test #1. Did a group review of class presentations. (Need to do the following NEXT TIME: Introduce the workflow for capturing, editing, and adding samples to NN-XT and NN-19. Imported "Astor" track into Logic. Extracted a phrase and edited it. Saved, then imported into a NN18 instrument. A few students needed to make up Tuesday's test #1.) Went over some deadlines, etc. Ask what people have in mind for their class presentations.

Largely work time on #6, due next week. Introduced the workflow for capturing, editing, and adding samples to NN-XT and NN-19. Imported "Astor" track into Logic. Extracted a phrase and edited it. Saved, then imported into a NN18 instrument. A few students needed to make up Tuesday's test #1. Went over some deadlines, etc. Ask what people have in mind for their class presentations.
Friday, 2/18

(Older notes from spring 2010 follow - fall 2010 had a very compressed schedule that cannot be used in normal terms.) This was "catch up" day for the Friday class. Collected and reviewed quiz 2. Graded project 4. Did test 1. Did quick reviews of topic previously covered: making server backups and editing sounds for assignment 5. Work time on #5. Thought it might be finished today, but not the case - due at start of next class.)


Fall 2010

Monday  11/1
Heard #4 - but many were still not finished at start of period. Reviewed "cycle" and looked at "tools" for things including quantizing, velocity, etc. Work time on assignment 5. (Today's plan would have been to include the 2nd EM history topic, but putting that off until Wednesday with changes to test and quiz date as well.)

Did NOT present material for quiz 2 - present this next time with quiz due next WEDNESDAY and test the following MONDAY.

(Hold off on starting to introduce use of audio samples in Logic including downloads from sampleswap.org. Decided to not do this intro, and to instead save it for start of period on Wednesday, along with playback of assignment 5 - could delay one more class session if 5 still not done.)
Tuesday 11/2
Reviewed the use of external MIDI instruments with Reason instrument. Overview of the setup of both the audio and the control connections between Logic and Reason via Rewire. Need to go over setting up audio tracks ("Create Arrange Tracks...") for each device and reasons for doing so - though maybe not as we have touched on this

Explained the class presentation proposals and announced due date as listed.

It appears that I have not heard/graded assignment 5 - must do that on Thursday.
Wednesday 11/3
Heard remaining #4 assignments that were finished. Will not ask for them again. Work time on #5 with new due date for next week. Did the second electronic music history topic - assigned quz 2 due date and set test 1 date.

Did not get to the following: "We signed up for Sampleswap and went over how to find and download files. Also gave a very basic demonstration of how to import the audio files into Logic tracks and very quickly showed how to match their length to bar lines or adjust sequence tempo to match sample tempo/length." (Do this next time.)
Thursday 11/4
Heard #5 - finally - from many of the students, but a few still need to show it. (Some did not understand all parts of the assignment.)  The period was almost entirely for work time on #6 which is due at the next session.

Need to introduce the basic workflow of bringing audio into Logic for editing, saving edited samples, and then importing into Reason instruments - as used in assignment 7. Also update on the due date for the presentation proposals - perhaps hear from students on their "ideas in progress" at the next session.

NO CLASS NEXT WEEK. Time to get ahead of the other class. Started with review of quiz 2. Work time on #5 which is due today. Set up for access to sampleswap.org. Gave a quick demo of how to bring audio into Logic and beat match it. Test #1. Work time on #6 (due next session on 11/19).

I heard perhaps 2/3 or 3/4 of the assignment 5 examples. A few were not ready and others I didn't get to. Need to hear them next Monday - which is also the test day.

2/17

Reviewed Quiz 2 and reminded the class that test 1 is next Monday. Heard remaining projects 4 - only a few individuals may not have played/shown it, and they need to let me know when it is finished. Signed everyone up for sampleswap; downloaded a drum loop; imported it into an audio track in Logic. Went over how to synchronize the tempo of a single loop and the Logic sequence by CHANGING THE LOGIC TEMPO. Did not yet do the audio editor or pitch/time machine or other factory options.

Next time: Start period with more on audio editing as pertaining to the use of samples in Logic. Then, at about 1:10, hand out the test. As people finish the test, hear assignment 5. (This was all announced at today's class.)

Did first EM history preso (way behind schedule!) and assigned quiz for next class session. Work time on #5. Will hear #5 at START of period next time. Also next time: intro use of audio samples, history topic #2 (?), set test 1 date.
Tuesday 11/3
Introduced Rewire today - and did the whole thing including routing mixed and individual audio from Reason to Logic and routing Arrange track control info to Reason instruments. Consolidated old assignments 6 and 6A into current 6, but need to formally announce it to class next time.

There are still projects that I have not heard: some #5 and all #1 from first-time 8 students.

NEED TO DO THIS NEXT: Introduced the class presentation project assignment.

Introduced the class presentation assignment and set deadline for submission of proposals for next Thursday, November 12 at start of period - with schedule announced by the following Tuesday and earliest projects scheduled for one week after that. Went over the requirements for project 6 and set the deadline as end of period next Tuesday.

(Neglected to let students know that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class. Also next time, must start with the info for project 7.)
Friday, 11/6
Work time on #6, due at start of next session. Last time I had Introduced downloads from Sampleswap.org, saving files on local drive, importing audio into Logic - Continued today with methods of synchronizing tempo of sample to Logic (change Logic tempo or use Pitch/Time Machine) and basic audio editing functions. Work time on #6. In that we have two holidays coming up... #6 is due next time. We reviewed quiz 2 and did test 1 at end of period.

Introduced the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did some individual trouble-shooting. Did explain briefly how to connect Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually via external midi instruments. Heard #5 - the sampler/matrix assignment. Reviewed process of making server backups.
Wednesday 5/20
Need to hear at least some project 5 today by end of period. Should also introduce method for making server backup. Joined sampleswap.org and downloaded samples. Then brought them into Logic. NOTE: Did not do the server backup demo - next time!
Thursday 5/21
Heard many #6 assignments, but a few still need to play this for me on Tuesday. We now know the techniques necessary to do #6a, so go over that assignment on Tuesday. Look ahead to #7 and see what else needs to be introduced. (Neglected to let students know that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class. Also next time, must start with the info for project 7.)

Introduced downloads from Sampleswap.org, saving files on local drive, importing audio into Logic, methods of synchronizing tempo of sample to Logic (change Logic tempo or use Pitch/Time Machine). Work time on #6 for those who finished #5. Introduced process for backing up to file server. (We are probably a bit ahead of schedule at this point - but that is not a bad thing.)

Introduced the class presentation project assignment. Went over -- again - the setup for rewiring Logic and Reason. Class worked on this and I did some individual trouble-shooting. Did not yet explain how to connect Reason instruments to the Logic mixer individually - do this on Thursday
Wednesday 2/18
Heard assignment #4 from a few remaining students. Test #1 at start of period. Almost the entire remaining session was used for work time on assignment #5. Did introduce two brief concepts: bouncing to mp3 and automating the Output 1-2 fader via automation in the Arrange window - e.g. to do a fade-out at the end of a piece.
Thursday 2/19
#6 is due. (Some still did not play it!) Review how to backup to server. Review how to connect Reason instruments to Logic individually. Assigned project 6a.  (Neglected to let students know that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class. Also next time, must start with the info for project 7.)
Friday, 2/20
Test 1 at beginning of period. Work time on assignment 4 to be heard this period. Did/re-did the basic introduction to simple editing of the ES1 and assignment #5 for next week. Work time on #5 for those who finished #4.

(Save for next week: Introduced the import of audio samples into Logic audio tracks, and techniques for matching to tempo of sequence, including use of time and pitch machine - normally this might have been done this week except we missed the previous Friday for a holiday.)

Introduce the class project assignment. (Neglected to let students know that next Thursday I'll ask everyone to briefly share their project plan in class.) Mostly work time on the Logic project (this quarter only). Introduce time/pitch machine.
Friday, 11/7
Test 1 at beginning of period. Work time on assignment 5 to be heard at end of period. Introduced the import of audio samples into Logic audio tracks, and techniques for matching to tempo of sequence, including use of time and pitch machine - and announced the due date for assignment 6 using these techniques. Students who finished assignment 5 early worked on assignment 6. Heard most assignment 5 projects but ran out of time to hear the last few - need to hear the remaining students' assignments next time.
