Current Term

• The schedule had indicated assignment #4 due today, but only two students were finished - not surprising in that we are at least one class session ahead of last term. I changed the deadline until this Wednesday and made most of today's session work time on this assignment.
• I reminded the class to print the quiz today if they had not already done so - it is due at the next class.
• I did a very cursory introduction to the ES1 and editing.
  
• Quick explanation of the "foot" octave transposition buttons
• The Mix fader
• Very (!) basic explanation that waveform affects tone color
• Extremely basic description of what a filter does (alters tone color), plus basic settings
• Very brief explanation of ADSR - actually only A and R.
• Need to review what else needs explaining for the assignment - especially how to save and recover sounds, where and how to store them, etc.

Reviewed quiz 1.  Work time on #4, which is due at next class session.  Near the very end of the period, did an extremely quick and very, very basic overview of editing the ES 1 for those who want a head start on the next assignment.

We are accelerating the schedule this week since there are two fall term holidays, including one next Friday. Today we reviewed quizzes #1 and #2, both of which were due today. Test #1 is at the end of the period. Work time on #4, which is due later in the period. Introduce basic ES 1 editing techniques for assignment #5, which students may start today. Will need some work time on it at next meeting in two weeks, since it will be due later in the period that day.

Went over quiz 2. NEGLECTED TO SET TEST DATE - DO THIS NEXT TIME. Heard remaining assignment #4. Introduced the basics of Rewire, including how to rewire the Reason Mixer or individual Reason instruments into Logic. Did not do the External MIDI aspect of this yet - for next time?

Did not yet assign the deadline for submitting proposals - perhaps do that before that start of Thursday's class? The rest of the period was work time on the NNXT/NN19/Matrix assignment that is due next meeting.

Changed course just a bit today. Did second rewire session in which we create arrange tracks in logic that hold midi data for reason instruments. The assignment based on this is due next Thursday

Introduced the class presentation assignment and explained roughly how it works. Set deadline for proposals as two weeks from today. (Will need to check in on progress sometime during next week's class - likely on Thursday.) Posted and announced the date of test #2 - see quiz schedule.

Delayed deadline for #5 - which had been today - until the first half of next Tuesday's class. (Note: It is quite possible that having #6 finished by next Thursday may be too aggressive of a schedule.)

Reviewed quiz 1. Changed deadline for next assignment (4) from end of today to middle of next session. (At next session, start with new material for next assignment - e .g sound editing of logic basics -  follow with 45 minutes work time on #4, etc.) Introduced second electronic music topic - BUT DID NOT PLAY VARESE YET.

Introduced the basic methods of modifying/creating sound on the ES1 as required for assignment 5. DID NOT ANNOUNCE DEADLINE FOR ASSIGNMENT 5 YET - it will likely be the first session after the break.

DID NOT hear #4 after all. Only perhaps a half dozen students were finished. MUST hear them near start of next period - no more work time - play them in whatever form they are in.

Changed course just a bit today. Introduced the use of Rewire to interconnect Reason and Logic. Covered all three aspects in at least a basic way: connecting mixer audio from Reason into Logic Mixer, connecting individual instrument to Logic Mixer, and creating external MIDI tracks in Logic. Because of this, did not hear #5 at end of period. Will do this at start of class on Tuesday.

Reminder about quiz #1 due at next class. (Need to do next topic, schedule quiz and test 1.) Did a very quick introduction to sound editing on the ES1, including how to save an instrument. Introduced the use of the NN19, both to bring in pre-set sample instruments and to build an instrument from individual samples. Still did not assign the quiz! Need to do that and perhaps demo the NN-XT next time - though one or both could wait a session if time is needed for work on #5.  (Save for later:  basic introduction to Rewire -  stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then  individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)

Project 6 is next week - maybe... I did not announce it or go over required techniques yet. Need to do this next week on Tuesday. (STILL NEED TO DO THE QUIZ.) DID: introduce the NN-XT. How to do layers, including velocity layers. Heard #5 from most students but a few need to be checked next Tuesday. Introduced the CV Splitter/merger, mostly in the context of splitting. Very briefly pointed out the existence of the audio equivalent module. Only checked a couple #1 assignments. Need to follow up on this next time.

Reviewed harmonics and frequency modulation sidebands for the take-home quiz that is due at the start of the period on Thursday. Did a quick introduction to the NNXT, demonstrating how to load instruments and samples, how to create a simple layer, and the basic concept of velocity layers. (Save for later: Did the basic introduction to Rewire - brought stereo audio from Reason into the Logic mixer and then brought individual instruments from Reason into separate Logic tracks/channel strips.)

Introduced the editing of plugin synths in Logic - used the ES1 Subtractive Synth mostly, but also a bit of EFM, ESX24, and Ultrabeat - and how to save settings for later use. Heard assignment 4. Made assignment 5. (Next class will also largely be a work session on assignment 5 - though perhaps return the two quizzes at the beginning and do the test at the end!) (Still need to perhaps take a closer look at the mixer, including how to record automation directly from the mixer controls. Perhaps need to take a quick look at editing the EFM 1 synth.)
