CURRENT TERM

(General Notes for Week 4 - Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.)

Monday 4/29

Most of today was used for assessing work on assignment #2, with some students using time to complete that assignment and others moving on to work on #3, which is due in one week. The only new subject was a brief introduction to the global tracks area at the top of the arrange window, and its use for tempo and meter.

Wednesday's class will introduce a lot more new material, likely for assignment #3, though it is about time for the first history topic, too.

Attendance was down today. There were a few open computers.

Tuesday 4/30

Collected and quickly reviewed quiz #1. (Quiz #2 is due one week from today.) Introduced a few odds and ends related to the Subtractor, mostly related keyboard control of the filter and mapping velocity to various parameters. Also discussed "polyphony" on synths and portamento. Did a brief, initial session on signal processors in Reason - necessary for assignment #4 - introducing the serial connection of the half-rack reverb and delay to a subtractor. Briefly mentioned the possibility of connecting signal processors to the mixer but did not demo it - for next time. Most of the period was work time on #3 and possibly starting on #4.

Wednesday 5/1

Much of the session today was work time on #3, which is due at the next class session. I also had to do a quick reprise of Monday's topic for five students who missed that class. I did a basic introduction of automation in Logic, clearly showing how to do it with volume and pan and somewhat introducing the possibility of automating other things.

At the next class:

In many ways we are mostly caught up now. Heard the last of the Garage Band assignments. Heard a small number of the first Logic assignments (#2), and will hear all remaining #2 assignments during the first part of the next class. Announced that #3 is due one week from today - next Wednesday. Introduced the use of effects inserts in Logic. Did the introduction fairly quickly without much in the way of detail about specific effects and how they work or about editing them manually. (May want to show an example of editing an effect next time.) Next time: finish any other new techniques that are necessary for assignment #4 OR do the first history topic instead.

(OLD: Work time on #3. Went over some odds and ends - how to show time/bars in the "ruler bar," how to check to see that the percussion parts on multiple tracks really share the same "inst" part. Hear a few remaining examples of assignment #2 from those who were no finished on Monday. Some still have not shown it, but they know that they must tell me when/if they finish. Work time on project 3. Began the description of how to use effect inserts in Logic. Did not start first EM history topic today. Must do next week!)

Thursday 1/31

Heard remaining Redrum (#2) assignments. Did the second half of the modulation topic, this time using two audio oscillators. Collected and reviewed quiz #1. Announced that quiz #2 is due next Thursday. Students now working on assignment #3, and quite a few seemed to be finished or almost so.

(OLD: Completed the description of the signal processor assignment. Heard almost all Assignment #3 - a few to hear next Tuesday.)

Friday 2/1
Graded all remaining Garage Band assignments. Did first electronic music history topic and assigned first quiz as due at start of class next week. Heard #2 from virtually all students. Heard #3 from a small number - told class that they can expect a small amount of work time (perhaps 30 minutes?) on #3 before I hear it during the first half of next week's class. Introduced no new Logic techniques this week, but will next week for the next assignment, and that assignment will likely be due in week six.

hear assignment #3
introduce other topics needed to complete 34
first electronic music history subject.

PREVIOUS TERMS
2013 Spring

(General Notes for Week 4 - Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.)

Monday 1/28

After last week's odd schedule, we are playing catch-up. Finished the techniques necessary for assignment 3 today. Heard the garage band assignments. Changed deadline for #2 to next class - will try to hear some perhaps 15 minutes into period and then hear unfinished work later in the period. Need to specify deadline for #3 as most likely next Monday, but think about this.

(OLD: Finished hearing assignment #2. Work time on #3. Did a very basic introduction to automation in Logic - primarily volume and panning though briefly also mentioned other parameters. Getting close to time for the first history topic and whatever else is required for assignment 4.)

Tuesday 1/29

As above, we are playing a bit of "catch up" this week after a missed class last Tuesday and my illness on Thursday. Continued today with the Subtractor, moving on to using a quick introduction to the mod envelope and then a more detailed description of LFOs and how they are used to control (mostly) oscillators. Will hold off on modulation using two audio oscillators until the Thursday class. Heard remaining redrum (#2) assignments.

(OLD: Reviewed the first quiz and reminded about the second. Introduced Reason effects and how to wire them to individual instruments and to the mixer. The Subtractor assignment is due today, but rather than hear them I decided to complete the introduction to the effects and save hearing them for next time. Class now (barely) knows enough to start the effect assignment, though I did not yet go over the details or set the due date for them. I promised that we would START the period on Thursday with my audition of the Subtractor assignment.)

Wednesday 1/30

In many ways we are mostly caught up now. Heard the last of the Garage Band assignments. Heard a small number of the first Logic assignments (#2), and will hear all remaining #2 assignments during the first part of the next class. Announced that #3 is due one week from today - next Wednesday. Introduced the use of effects inserts in Logic. (OLD: Completed the description of the signal processor assignment. Heard almost all Assignment #3 - a few to hear next Tuesday.)

Friday 2/1 (not this quarter)
Graded all remaining Garage Band assignments. Did first electronic music history topic and assigned first quiz as due at start of class next week. Heard #2 from virtually all students. Heard #3 from a small number - told class that they can expect a small amount of work time (perhaps 30 minutes?) on #3 before I hear it during the first half of next week's class. Introduced no new Logic techniques this week, but will next week for the next assignment, and that assignment will likely be due in week six.
2013 Winter

(General Notes for Week 4 - This week in all classes we need to go over how to create backups. Need to start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz. (Quiz 1 due in Music 8.) Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.)

(OLD: Introduced method of spreading drum parts across multiple tracks - with this and the material on three ways to re-use regions, it is now possible to do the next assignment 3. Automation is perhaps next, and it is time to do a history topic.)

Tuesday 1/31

Introduced Reason effects and how to wire them to individual instruments and to the mixer. Announced due dates for the two quizzes, and the cancellation of this Thursday's class for a music department flex day. The Subtractor assignment is supposed to be due today, but not everyone is finished - heard perhaps a half dozen of them, and announced that I would hear the rest at the start of the next meeting.

Wednesday 2/1

Heard remaining assignment 2 from those who were no finished on Monday. Some still have not shown it, but they know that they must tell me when/if they finish. Work time on project 3. Did a _very_ basic introduction to how automation is displayed and entered in Logic - just enough to get people started on it.

DID NOT: Introduced the use of effects/inserts in Logic. Briefly went over a few sample effects, how to add, bypass, and remove them, how to add more, etc.
Did not start first EM history topic today. Will need a half hour or so of work time on #3 on Monday before I begin to evaluate them.

Thursday 2/2

No meeting due to music department flex day activity in the afternoon

Friday 2/3

Began with a few minutes of work time, then did the "second pass" to hear assignment #2. Plan: work time on #3. Introduce Logic automation. First EM history topic. Assign history quiz 1 for next Friday. Did a quick explanation of the Logic Basics instruments. DID NOT HEAR #3, so plan for start of next week: collect and review quiz, then hear #3, then work time on #4 (need to review it with class), then other stuff as needed...

2011 Fall

Monday 10/17

Reviewed need for backups and method for creating them, along with the importance of saving into individual folders within the student files folder. Introduced basic automation in Logic, including how to create an arrange track for output 1-2 to control volume of all tracks. Assigned #2 as due next Monday. Heard #2.

Heard some of project #2. Went over introduction to track automation, primarily on volume/pan, but also described how it can be used to control/edit other values as well, but not in any detail. (Note: Assignment 2 was supposed to be due near the start of the period, but almost no one had finished. Perhaps did not have enough time at previous session? Consequently, aside from introducing automation, no new material this session. Hear #2 near end of session.‚

(DID NOT YET go over setting up the master volume fader via Output 1-2.) DID NOT yet cover the addition of effects" - (NEED TO: Started EM History by doing precursor including the Singing Arc and the Teleharmonium. Stopped before doing the Theremin.)

Mostly work time on the signal processor assignment that is due at the START of the next class session. Took time out to introduce the Matrix Pattern Sequencer. Covered the CV, gate, and curve values and patched curves to filter frequency. (At some point need to move on to the splitter/merger module. But next step - before that - is likely to introduce the samplers.)

HEARD ABOUT FOUR #3 PROJECTS AT START OF PERIOD. Work session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects (serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to samplers?)
Friday 11/15

Continued Logic Automation, adding automation of the Output 1-2 channel in the arrange window (Have also introduced use of effects inserts).

Friday 4/30

We had serious attendance problems today. Only eight students were present at the start of the period, and about 4-5 came in late - some more than one hour late. Had a serious discussion about this issue with the class and emailed all absent students and asked for a response from each of them. Moving on...

Introduced Logic Automation. Automated volume and panning, and explained how other parameter could be automated, even individual instrument and plugin parameters. (The latter discussed conceptually, but don't expect that students will do this just yet.) Introduced logic plugin effects.

Hear assignment 3 at end of class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic and take-home quiz next week!)

Collect and review quiz 1. Heard assignment 2 at start of period. Reviewed techniques for assignment 3: alias, copy, loop; multiple tracks with same instrument; basic quantizing; volume/panning controller display. DID NOT start new history topic for quiz 2, which would have been due next Friday - will need to delay by one week, and think about how this does or does not affect test schedule. IMPORTANT: I heard assignment 3 from many students but not all - need to hear remaining assignments next time. Also, did not go on to project 4 information or to the second quiz presentation.

Monday 1/30

Heard #2.
Next: Time for EM history?

Tuesday 10/18

No 8 this quarter

Wednesday 11/19

Introduce the "Logic Basics Instruments" later in the period. Assign #3 as due next Monday, 5/2.
Next: Time for EM history?

Tuesday 4/26

Decided to NOT hear Subtractor (3) assignment today - will hear at start of next class. Presented signal processors - series and parallel connections. Go over effects modules. Assigned #4 as due one week from Thursday. Reminder that quiz #1 is due on Thursday.

Next class will introduce remaining concepts for assignment 4, if any - AND begin history topic.

Wednesday 4/27

Heard a few remaining assignment 2 from those who were absent on Monday. Work time on project 3. Introduced the use of effects/inserts in Logic. Briefly went over a few effects, how to add, bypass, and remove them, how to add more, etc.
Next time: Introduction to automation, and need to at least explain how to do a master volume track next time. Perhaps do introduction of EM history topic. Review need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.

Thursday 4/28

Heard all remaining Assignment #3 (Subtractor), which took most of the period. Introduced the Matrix sequencer, connected to the Subtractor. Did NOT assign quiz 2 - MUST DO NEXT TIME. Reviewed quiz #1. Work time on #4 as I circulated to hear #3.

Friday 4/29

(General Notes for Week 4 - Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.)

hear assignment #3
introduce other topics needed to complete 34
first electronic music history subject.

Wednesday 4/28
Heard the few remaining project 2. Work time on project 3. Introduced signal processors and how to insert them in Logic. Project 3 is now due at very start of period next Monday. Save for next time: introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.)
Thursday 4/29

2010 Winter

Monday 1/25
Was scheduled to hear most recent project (#2), but put this off until start of next class. Discussed the need to get back on track and finish assignments on schedule. Introduced the three method of reusing a region: loop, option-drag (copy/paste), and alias. Introduced method for backing work up on the server. Delayed deadline for #3 until start of period next Monday.

(DID NOT YET go over setting up the master volume fader via Output 1-2.) DID NOT yet cover basic track automation of volume and pan, nor the addition of effects" - (NEED TO: Started EM History by doing precursor including the Singing Arc and the Teleharmonium. Stopped before doing the Theremin.)
Tuesday 1/26
Finished listening to the Subtractor (#3) project. Explained signal processors and the two ways to wire them in Reason. Announced assignment 4. Next class will need work time on this and introduce another topic.
Wednesday 1/27
Heard remaining project 2. (Except for those who still were not ready - they must inform me when finished. Work time on project 3. Project 3 is due at start of the next. Began introducing automation in Logic. We exposed the automation view, saw how to edit volume and panning, and had a conceptual example of displaying/editing other parameters. Save for next time: introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.)

Friday 1/29

A bit of a complicated day. Hear all of assignment 2 during first part of period. Introduced basic automation in the Arrange window. Did first electronic history project. Quiz 1 due at start of next class. Some time was available for work on project 3 - which had been due at this session but I had to delay deadline now until start of next class. Need to try to keep on track for assignment four - which was not yet assigned - since we'll have a Friday holiday the following week.

Need to introduce effects/inserts on 1/5.

2010 Fall

Friday 10/15
Explained how to control/edit velocity of individual tracks that share the same inst. (DID NOT DO: Finish the first EM History topic by covering Theremin - the assigned/explained the first take-home quiz that is due next Friday at start of period.) Did a VERY basic introduction to Logic effects/inserts - showing how to add them, how to bypass them, how to add more than one, and very briefly demoed a couple of reverbs - did not cover any particular effects in detail. Test 1 tentatively scheduled for two weeks from today - the same day that quiz 2 is due - on May 15. This entails doing the second history topic next week. (This may need to be delayed...)

DID cover how to backup folders to the server.

(General Notes for Week 4 - Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.)

Monday 1/28

Changed deadline for #2 to next class - will try to hear some perhaps 15 minutes into period and then hear unfinished work later in the period. Need to specify deadline for #3 as most likely next Monday, but think about this.

Heard #2.
Next: Time for EM history?

Tuesday 10/18

No 8 this quarter

Wednesday 11/19

Heard a few remaining assignment 2 from those who were absent on Monday. Work time on project 3. Introduced the use of effects/inserts in Logic. Briefly went over a few sample effects, how to add, bypass, and remove them, how to add more, etc.
Did not start first EM history topic today. Will need a half hour or so of work time on #3 on Monday before I begin to evaluate them.

Thursday 10/20

No 8 this quarter

Friday 10/21

Began with 30 minutes of work time on #2. Then introduced automation in Logic. Introduced effects in Logic. Heard #2. (Anyone who did not play it must let me know when/if they finish.) STARTED the first EM history topic and went as far as the Teleharmonium - did NOT to the Theremin. Next time do the Theremin and talk about assigning and scheduling takehome quizzes and tests. #3 is due - supposedly - 30 minutes into the period next time.

2011 Spring

General Notes for Week 4 - This week in all classes we need to go over how to back up to the server. Need to start the EM history topics in both 51 classes and assign first quiz.

Quiz on FM for Music 8? Intro needs to learn how to create a MASTER VOLUME FADER and CONTROL TRACK and how to automate track volume and panning.

Monday 11/11

Tuesday 11/12
Finished listening to the Subtractor (#3) project. Explained signal processors and the two ways to wire them in Reason. Next class will introduce remaining concepts for assignment 4 along with due date - AND begin history topic
Wednesday 11/13
Heard the few remaining project 2. Work time on project 3. Introduced signal processors and how to insert them in Logic. Project 3 is now due at very start of period next Monday. Save for next time: introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.)
Thursday 11/14

DID NOT (!) Hear assignment 3 at end of class - do at week 5 class. Announce assignment 4. (Introduced first EM history topic through Telharmonium and Singing Arc - did not do Theremin nor did I announce the take-home quiz!)

Also, while some can play the next assignment (#4) at the end of the 5/8 class, I will also be willing to hear it at the start of the 5/15 class.

Monday 1/26
Heard most recent project (#2). Introduced basic automation of volume and panning in the Arrange window. Showed but did not explain at all the effects of automation on the mixer. Talked about but did not do - the automation of parameters on individual instruments. (Today it was important to get #2 done, hear it, and start working on #3 - since we're behind the Friday class.) need to do history #1 on Wednesday.
Tuesday 1/27
Hear remaining project #3 until start of period today. Explained/demoed the inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they do - a quick overview. Heard project 3 near the end of the period. Also did a very brief and quick demo on automation in Reason and announced the next assignment and due date of next class, end of period.
Wednesday 1/28
Work time on project 3. Project 3 is due at end of period today - but only a very few were ready due to our compressed schedule. Those who did not play today must play back at the start of the next class periodSave for next time: introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.)
Thursday 1/29
Work session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects (serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to samplers?)
Friday 1/30
Heard essentially all project 2. Heard only a handful of assignment 3 - all others are due at very start of class next week. Went over continuous controllers in logic arrange window fairly thoroughly. Covered the EM history through Theremin. EM history quiz 1 due at start of class next week. Did NOT start topics for assignment 4 - must do next time. Need to do next EM history section at next class, followed by quiz and announcement of test 1 date.

Monday 10/13
Heard most recent project. Introduced how to reassign tracks in Logic - multiple tracks with same instrument, creating new/additional instruments, etc. Also covered the three ways to repeat a region: loop, copy, alias. Intro'd next assignment.
Tuesday 10/14
(NOTE: Delayed due date for #3 until start of period today.) Explained/demoed the inclusion of signal processors ("effects") both in series and in parallel (at the mixer). Still need to go briefly over some of the effects modules besides the basic reverb and delay to explain what they do. Heard project 3 near the end of the period.
Wednesday 10/15
Work time on project 3. Save for next time: playback of project 3, introduction of EM history topic. (OLD: Reviewed need for synchronization with click track and how to record to ensure that this happens.)
Thursday 10/16
Work session on assignment 4 - adding effects to sound modules and the mixer. Began period by reviewing the two ways to incorporate effects (serial and parallel). Gave an overview of the effects modules in Reason (at previous session). Assignment 4 due next class. (Then on to samplers?)
Friday Oct 17
Collect and review quiz 1. Heard assignment 2 at start of period. Reviewed techniques for assignment 3: alias, copy, loop; multiple tracks with same instrument; basic quantizing; volume/panning controller display. DID NOT start new history topic for quiz 2, which would have been due next Friday - will need to delay by one week, and think about how this does or does not affect test schedule. IMPORTANT: I heard assignment 3 from many students but not all - need to hear remaining assignments next time. Also, did not go on to project 4 information or to the second quiz presentation.
