Current Term

Because of last week's Monday holiday, this class is a bit behind the Friday class. Additional Logic basics today - very basic use of quantizing. how to use apple loops in Logic. Did the first pass hearing assignment #1. Need to hear remained assignment 1 work at next class.

Next time: go over the requirements for assignment 2 and announce deadline

Continued with the subtractor. Finished coverage of filters: types, resonance, etc. Covered ADSR modules for volume and for filter. Mentioned the keyboard knob on the filter. Announced assignment 3. Heard a few remaining assignment 2. Work time on Subtractor and and assignment 3.

Introduced three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that assignment #2 is due soon. Heard all remaining assignment 1. Work time on project 2. IMPORTANT: DID NOT introduce the technique for splitting a drum part across multiple tracks - though this is required for assignment 3!

(Did NOT DO a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments - ES1,  Sampler, Ultrabeat. Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?)

Did the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Introduced sidebands, both with non-harmonic and harmonic oscillator frequencies. (Need to assign the two quizzes on FM and harmonics.)

Previous Terms

Heard the remaining Garage Band projects. (DID not: Discussed limiting volume to avoid peaks.) Introduced use of Apple loops in Logic. Introduced the methods of spreading a single drum part over multiple tracks using one "instrument." Reviewed "looping" basics - e.g. how to use a blank regions, etc. Assigned #2 as due this coming Monday at start of period.

Continued with Subtractor Introduction. Concluded use of LFO including modulation of frequency, filter, and mix. Went over the concept of harmonics, from guitar string to the four synthesizer waveforms. (DID NOT - SAVE FOR NEXT TIME: Went to FM with two audio oscillators and covered the basics of this including sidebands, generation of harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator. use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres.) Need to do a quiz on waveforms, harmonics, FM...

Portions of period were work time on project 2 - which is due at the start of the period on Monday. Went over selecting sounds from the "Logic Basics" set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat. Also described three methods of "reusing" a region in Logic: loop, copy (and edit?), alias. Some may have finished assignment 2 today and started #3.

On Monday need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader.

This is was the "tough sledding" session - going over how FM works when using two audio oscillators and, in particular, trying to make sense out of sidebands. We went over how to calculate them in some simple situations. Most of remaining time in the period was work time on the Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today. Heard about half of these assignments and need to hear the remaining projects at the next class meeting. (May still want to do: All filled in a few details about various controls that we had not already covered in the subtractor: pitch bend, modulation, portamento, the velocity controls, etc.) Need to distribute the harmonics/sidebands quiz, perhaps as two separate quizzes.

Next subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead, and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer send/receive, etc. Need to consider class topics and to do a quiz.

Including Audio/Real instrument loops in Logic - brief explanation. Did a very basic description (but only using the "+" button) of how to split a part across tracks - NEED TO COVER HOW TO USE THE SAME INSTRUMENT PART FOR THIS... Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.

Briefly mentioned that the above techniques would be used in assignment #2 but did not cover assignment details nor the due date.

Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias. (If time, show - but do not explain in detail - the automation for volume/pan.) Heard assignment 2 with the exception of perhaps a half dozen who I'll hear at the start of the next class.
