ALL (NOTE that the information on this page is not always kept up to date. Check assignments pages for official due dates.)
Current TermMonday 1/23
Because of last week's Monday holiday, this class is a bit behind the Friday class. Additional Logic basics today - very basic use of quantizing. how to use apple loops in Logic. Did the first pass hearing assignment #1. Need to hear remained assignment 1 work at next class.
Next time: go over the requirements for assignment 2 and announce deadline
Tuesday 1/24 Continued with the subtractor. Finished coverage of filters: types, resonance, etc. Covered ADSR modules for volume and for filter. Mentioned the keyboard knob on the filter. Announced assignment 3. Heard a few remaining assignment 2. Work time on Subtractor and and assignment 3.
Wednesday 1/25
Introduced three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that assignment #2 is due soon. Heard all remaining assignment 1.
Work time on project 2. IMPORTANT: DID NOT introduce the technique for splitting a drum part across multiple tracks - though this is required for assignment 3!
(Did NOT DO a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments - ES1, Sampler, Ultrabeat. Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?)
Thursday 1/26
Did the complex intro to FM, first with LFO and then with a second oscillator. Introduced sidebands, both with non-harmonic and harmonic oscillator frequencies. (Need to assign the two quizzes on FM and harmonics.)
Friday 1/27
(Did not update this!) Heard remaining Garage Band projects. Work time on #2 with the intention - likely to not be fully realized - of finishing it today. (Explained to class the unavoidable time issue this quarter that forces me to push a bit.) As I write this halfway through the period, it is likely that not all will be ready to play #2 and that I'll need significant time during second half of period to explain concepts for #3.
In fact, hearing #3 near the start of the period next week is the official plan...
Previous Terms2012 Fall
Monday 10/10Heard
remaining GB projects. Introduced splitting drums over multiple tracks
in Logic. Time to work on Logic assignment (#2). Briefly discussed
issues with audio peaks and some very basic ways to deal with them. Did a
very basic introduction to quantizing in Logic, showing only how to
quantize a region - did not quantize individual notes, and only offered
the basic "try this first" approach to selecting quantize values.
Demonstrated how to find and add Apple Loops to Logic Projects (for
assignment #2).
A few GB projects to hear (but no one said they
were done. For any remaining, student will need to ask me to hear it.)
For project 2: Intro loop browser in Logic. Demonstrated how to use
"apple loops" in Logic. Did quantizing basics. Reminded that assignment 2
is due next time and that work time is available during intermediate
class on Tuesday.
Tuesday 10/11 No Music 8 this quarter
Wednesday 10/12Introduced
three ways to re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias.
Reminded that assignment #2 is due at next class. There will be about 15
minutes to finish it up on Monday.
Work time on project 2 - which is due at start of next Monday's class.
Did a quick intro to using the Logic Basics Instruments - ES1, Sampler,
Ultrabeat - but only very briefly talked about selecting sounds.
Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?
Thursday 10/13No Music 8 this quarter Friday 10/14Heard
remaining Garage Band projects. Work time on #2 with the intention -
likely to not be fully realized - of finishing it today. (Explained to
class the unavoidable time issue this quarter that forces me to push a
bit.) As I write this halfway through the period, it is likely that not
all will be ready to play #2 and that I'll need significant time during
second half of period to explain concepts for #3.

remaining, student will need to ask me to hear it.) For project 2: Intro
loop browser in Logic. Demonstrated how to use "apple loops" in Logic.
Did quantizing basics. Reminded that assignment 2 is due next time and
that work time is available during intermediate class on Tuesday.
Tuesday 4/19 Continued
with Subtractor Introduction. Did use of LFO including modulation

harmonic sidebands, effect of keyboard control (or not) of modulator.
use of FM to generate diverse harmonic timbres. Hear remaining Redrum assignments. Need to do a quiz on
waveforms, harmonics, FM... Wednesday 4/20Heard
the very few remaining Garage Band projects. Introduced three ways to
re-use material from a region: loop, copy, alias. Reminded that
assignment #2 is due during last half of this class though some may not
be ready.
Work time on project 2 - which was due at the end of the period but is
now due at start of next Monday's class. Made brief mention of next
assignment and (only quickly) described how to spread drums across
multiple tracks with the same "inst."
Still need to fully cover the method for spreading a drum part over multiple tracks.
Did NOT: Went over selecting sounds from the "Logic Basics" set, and the basic use of ES1, EXS24, and Ultrabeat.
Later next week need to go over: Introduce track automation including creating a master volume fader?
Thursday 4/21Introduced
the topic of frequency modulation and sidebands, with all the gory
details about calculating sideband frequencies and the rest. Did NOT yet
assign the quiz on the topic - perhaps at the NEXT session? Some work
time on the Subtractor assignment which is due at the end of the next
class meeting. Assigned the first quiz with a due date as listed on the
web site. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) (DID NOT:Did a quick once-over
regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony,
portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. At end of period did a
very basic intro to signal processors and back panel "wiring" in Reason.
We only looked at how to insert one effect module between the
Subtractor and the Mixer.)
Next subject is likely to be signal
processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some
processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead,
and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer
send/receive, etc.
Friday 4/22none this quarter 2011 Winter
Monday 1/17

Thursday 1/20
Most of time in the period was work time on the Subtractor assignment which was due at the end of the period today - but a majority of the class had not quite finished, so I'll hear it 15 MINUTES AFTER THE START OF NEXT TUESDAY'S SESSION. Assigned the first quiz with a due date of one week from today. (Assign quiz 2 next time?) Did a quick once-over regarding remaining controls on the Subtractor such as polyphony, portamento, bend/mod wheels, velocity control. At end of period did a very basic intro to signal processors and back panel "wiring" in Reason. We only looked at how to insert one effect module between the Subtractor and the Mixer.
Next subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next class with basic intro to some processors in series, then hear remaining projects as others go ahead, and then add more about processors including parallel wiring, mixer send/receive, etc.
Friday 1/21
Heard a few remaining Garage Band assignments. Essentially the same as MW class, but... heard some but not all of assignment #2. Need to hear the remaining #2 projects at the start of the period next week. The period will also need to include work time on #3 - it was assigned this week but there was NO time to work on it. Main new stuff was - Spliting a part across multiple tracks
- Loop, option-drag, and alias, and

controls, etc.) Need to distribute the harmonics/sidebands quiz, perhaps
as two separate quizzes.
Next
subject is likely to be signal processors. Tentative plan to begin next
