Monday 10/5

Including Audio/Real instrument loops in Logic - brief explanation. Did a very basic description (but only using the "+" button) of how to split a part across tracks - NEED TO COVER HOW TO USE THE SAME INSTRUMENT PART FOR THIS... Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.

Briefly mentioned that the above techniques would be used in assignment #2 but did not cover assignment details nor the due date.

DID NOT COVER the three ways to re-use a region in logic: option-drag, loop, and alias.

Heard SOME Garageband (#1) assignments from rows 1, 2, and 3. Next time need to hear rows 4, 5, and 6 - and anyone who "took a pass."
Tuesday 10/6
Since deadline of assignment #2 was delayed until today, heard project #2 at start of class. Finished the main features of the Subtractor including LFOs and a few odds and ends...BUT did not yet explain frequency modulation between two audio oscillators - need to do this on Thursday. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 10/7
Portions of period were work time on project 2 - which is due at the on Monday. Went over hte three ways to reuse regions: loop, copy, alias. DID NOT: Introduced track automation including creating a master volume fader.
Thursday 10/8
Introduced frequency modulation synthesis using the two Subtractor oscillators, and explained the concept of sidebands - this took more than half of the period. Then a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors). (Next time probably need to introduce use of inline effects)
Friday 10/9
Same as MW class but possibly a bit ahead of them.  Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias, and volume/pan automation. Heard assignment 2.
---

Monday 4/20
Covered the three ways to re-use a region in logic: option-drag, loop, and alias. Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.
Tuesday 4/21
Since deadline of assignment #2 was delayed until today, heard project #2 at start of class. Finished the main features of the Subtractor including LFOs and a few odds and ends...BUT did not yet explain frequency modulation between two audio oscillators - need to do this on Thursday. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 4/22
Portions of period were work time on project 2 - which is due at the START of the period on Monday. Introduced track automation including creating a master volume fader.
Thursday 4/23
Introduced frequency modulation synthesis using the two Subtractor oscillators, and explained the concept of sidebands. Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at end of class). (Next time probably need to introduce use of inline effects)
Friday 4/23
Same as MW class but possibly a bit ahead of them.  Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias, and volume/pan automation. Heard assignment 2.

Monday 2/20
Covered the three ways to re-use a region in logic: option-drag, loop, and alias. Also covered how to split a part across multiple tracks and some of the situations in which one might do this.
Tuesday 2/21
Since deadline of assignment #2 was delayed until today, heard project #2 at start of class. Finished the main features of the Subtractor including LFOs and a few odds and ends. Did frequency modulation between two audio oscillators. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 1/21
Most of period was work time on project 2. Introduced techniques for assignment 3, including spreading an instrument across multiple tracks and duplicating regions via loop, option-drag, and alias.
Thursday 1/22
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at end of class). Heard some assignment but need to hear the rest at the start of the next period. Also barely introduced addition of inline effects to instruments.
Friday 1/23
Same as MW class but possibly a bit ahead of them. Still need to explain using the file server and start automation. Main new stuff was spreading a part across multiple tracks and loop, option-drag, and alias. (If time, show - but do not explain in detail - the automation for volume/pan.) Heard assignment 2 with the exception of perhaps a half dozen who I'll hear at the start of the next class.

---

Monday 10/6
Finished listening to the last batch of Garage Band projects. Introduced the use of the audio tracks and how to bring in regions from the Loop Browser. Introduced simple quantizing. Also introduced methods for backing up files to USB memory stick and server. Described assignment #2 and announced the due date as next Monday at the start of class.
Tuesday 10/7

Finished the main features of the Subtractor including ADSR control of filters and use of LFO. Did not ntroduce frequency modulation between two audio oscillators. Work time on assignment 3 (five Subtractor synth sounds).
Wednesday 10/8
Most of period was work time on project 2. Briefly demoed the very basic interface to track automation and briefly described how to make duplicate tracks that use the same instruments. Next time (Monday): hear assignment 2, review/introduce techniques for project 3, perhaps do first topic if time.
Thursday 10/9
Primarily a work day on Assignment 3 (five subtractors - due at next class) Take a quick look at some remaining "minor" controls on the subtractor: portamento, the mod envelope, the second filter and interconnecting the filters, and the velocity controllers at the bottom right. - WILL HEAR ASSIGNMENT 3 AT START OF NEXT CLASS.
Friday 10/10
Introduce the use of "apple loops" on the audio tracks; several ways to repeat them, particularly the use of "loop" features. Demonstrate how to back up files to the server. (Should review this next week.) Do the first electronic music history topic and assign the first quiz as due next Friday. Introduced basic automation in the arrange window. Reminded of the differences and incompatablities beween audio and software instrument tracks. DID NOT PLAY BACK ASSIGNMENT 2 - IT IS NOW DUE AT THE START OF CLASS ON OCT 17.
