Week 3 Summary - Spring 2007

Lab day only; no lecture. We'll catch up on Thursday.

Did not hear the Garage Band projects. (To avoid exposing the class to my flu! - Will review Garage Band projects at the start of the period on Monday.) We did go over new techniques in Logic: adding Apply Loops to audio tracks; editing notes in the Matrix Edit view; the Hyper Edit, Score, and Event List views. (For next time, probably go on to features including Track Automation, etc.)

In addition to some work time on projects, I went over in some detail acoustical principles: waveforms, vibrations, harmonics and related terminology. Also went into some detail about different methods for using FM, and how to calculate (roughly) sideband frequencies, along with how to use sideband timbres to create harmonic and enharmonic timbres.

Heard more (but not quite all) Garage Band projects at start of period. Need to hear the few remaining ones at start of period next time. In Logic we looked at using Apple Loops and reviewed some featurers of the loop cursor and loop button. We went over the four ways of viewing track data: Score, Matrix Edit, Event List, and Hyper Edit. We also reviewed how to back up work to the server. Finally, we went over the requirements for assignment 2. It will be due later in the period next week.
