Intermediate Electronic Music Assignment 1

Intermediate Electronic Music Assignments: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 (| 6a) | 7 | Presentation | Final Project
(Note: Dates will be updated each quarter as the assignment deadlines are announced in class.)

NOTE: This assignment is always required for students who did not take Music 51: Intro to Electronic Music the previous quarter or very recently. During the 2008-09 fall term it is required for all students since we are using a new version of Logic that was not covered in the previous Intro class.

Description

Record a simple sequence in Logic that makes use of audio resources used in Introduction to Electronic Music.

Format

You must follow this format. Read it carefully!
  • Your project must use a minimum of six tracks in Logic.
  • At least three tracks must use Logic software instruments that you specify from the "media" lists.
  • At least one track must use a Logic Basics software synth plug-in with an instrument that you modify yourself. YOu may be asked to explain your modifications.
  • At least one track must use an audio Loop - e.g. "Apple Loop".
  • At least one track must use a sound inserted via the Import Audio... function in the Edit menu.
  • Volume and panning must both change at least once on each track. An initial setting for each satisfies this requirement for all but two tracks - on at least two tracks the volume and panning must change during the track.
  • One effect must be inserted into each track in the mixer or elsewhere via the Insert button.
  • You may use any style of music.
  • The example must be between 30 and 60 seconds long.
  • Label your project file as follows: "your name #1." Save it in your folder on the hard disk.

Assignment Goals

Completing this assignment will demonstrate that you can use Logic to record and playback a simple sequence using all sound sources in the studio, and ensure that everyone can get the basic equipment in the studio operating in the Logic environment.

Grading

You will be graded on technical aspects of the assignment. The assignment will not be graded on its musical merits. However, imagination can't hurt! The assignment description is intentionally vague so that there is room for you to exercise your imagination. Try to come up with an interesting piece within the guidelines of this project.

Other important factors that will affect your project grade include:
  • You may be asked to show your backup copy on this assignment. (Optional - more in class.)
  • Fix or remove any obvious note errors on the keyboard track.
  • Your project must demonstrate your ability to play accurately along with the click track and/or other looped tracks.

Due Date

Due date: Flexible, but you must ask me to listen to it no later than the end of week 6. (Students who have taken Music 51 may choose to play their final project from that class for me instead.)

Alternate: As an experiment beginning during the spring 2011 term, I will give credit for this assignment based on demonstration of Logic application skills on the Rewire assignments later in the term.
(Note: This assignment was originally intended as a way for students whose experience with Logic is limited to demonstrate sufficient skills to complete the "Rewire" assignment later this term. I do not plan to require this assignment during the current term, but students new to Logic are advised to spend time getting to know the program on their own during the first 6 weeks of the term. Credit for this assignment may be granted for demonstrating skills with the Logic application based upon successful completion of the final project.)

Good luck!
