Intro to Electronic Music Written Test This Week
An important reminder: The first written test in the Music 51: Introduction to Electronic Music class is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 23. This test is based on the same material you already saw on quizzes #1 and #2.
Due to the test, I have delayed the due date for assignment #5 until the start of class next Wednesday, May 30. (Monday, May 28 is part of Memorial Day Weekend - campus is closed!)

Important Changes to Class Repeatability and W Grades
Students should be aware of new regulations regarding the repeatability of classes and related to the W ("withdrawal") grade.
Beginning this summer, there will be a limit on the number of times most classes may be repeated. This will most affect students who may attempt a class and either withdraw or fail to pass and then reenroll in the class to try again. In general, the once a student make three attempts at a class, he or she will not be able to enroll in that class again. (There are some exceptions for certain courses in which repeating the class serves certain normal academic goals.)
Among the students who may be affected by this change are those who might enroll in a class the first time, feel that they are not doing as well as they might have hoped, and withdraw from the class with the plan to try again and do a better job. Under the new regulations, you may not be able to do this more than a single time - so be very cautious about using this strategy.
In addition, it appears that there may be some upcoming changes to the deadlines for withdrawing with W grades and similar. These changes are not currently in effect, but now is the time to plan for them.

Office Hour Adjustments for Week II
My schedule prevented me from meeting my full office hour this morning, so I have scheduled two make-up sessions:
- 11:30-11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18
- 8:55-9:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 19

Spring Quarter Open Labs
Many of you in both the Intro and the Intermediate classes have asked about the availability of additional lab time outside of your schedule class sessions. There are two ways to get additional time in the lab:
- Starting in week III, the lab will remain open after class concludes on Wednesdays - typically until about 3:45 or perhaps 4:00.
- You may also use any unused workstation during other electronic music classes - they meet every day between 12:30 and 2:15 or so. If you come in during another class, there are a few things you should know:
- Students enrolled in that class have priority for workstations. You must wait until the first five minutes of class have passed, and then you may use any unoccupied workstation.
- Very few, if any, workstations will be available during the Monday/Wednesday classes since there are more students than workstations in the room at this point! Perhaps in week three?

Spring 2012 First Day Information
Welcome to the spring 2012 term electronic music classes at De Anza College.
The Monday/Wednesday 12:30-2:20 Music 51: Introduction to Electronic Music class is currently full with a substantial waiting list. Those who hope to add the class must attend the first class meeting. Students on the official add list who are present at the start of class will have priority for any available open spots in the class, but it is often possible to add students who are not on the list.
The Tuesday/Thursday 12:30-2:20 Music 8: Intermediate Electronic Music class is also full, but with few or no additional names on the waiting list. It is likely that I will be able to add some additional students to this class at the first meeting. If you have completed Music 51: Introduction to Electronic Music, completed a comparable course elsewhere, or can otherwise demonstrate comparable background experience you may be able to get into this section.

One Last Open Lab...
I am going to try to have the electronic music lab open today (Wednesday, March 28) for about one hour between 1:30 and 2:30 or so. I may be able to keep it open just a bit longer than this.
I am certain that there will be no other open lab hours between now and the remaining final exam sessions.

Final Exam Week Open Lab
I am almost certain that the lab will be available on Tuesday, March 27 between about 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. as long as no other class has been scheduled into the lab for a final exam at that time. This will be the last available open lab before the deadlines for electronic music projects.

Schedule for Week 12
Week twelve of our 12-week quarter is sometimes called "final exams week." Here is a summary of main features of the final exam week schedule for electronic music classes.
- MONDAY, March 26
This is the last regular class meeting day of the winter term. MW classes meet on this day at their regular times. With this in mind, there is one meeting today: - Music 51 MW class meets at 12:30 to 2:15. The written test 2 will occur during this session, along with some time to work on final projects.
- TUESDAY, March 27
The college switches to the final exam schedule today, and we meet according to that schedule and not according the regular class schedule. With this in mind... - There are no final exams for electronic music classes scheduled for today, but...
- I may be able to open the lab at some point in the afternoon for an hour or two. This is not certain, but watch for an announcement.
- WEDNESDAY, March 28
- Final exam session for the MW 12:30 Intro to Electronic Music class at 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Please note that this is one hour earlier than the usual class time. You are required to be present for the entire 11:30-1:30 period. We use this session for playing back final projects.
- THURSDAY, March 29
- There are no scheduled meetings of electronic music classes today.
- FRIDAY, March 30
Two electronic music class sections will meet for their schedule final exam sessions today.
- Final exam session for the Friday-only Intro to Electronic Music class at 9:15 a.m. - 11:15 p.m. Please note that this is more than one hour earlier than the usual class time. You are required to be present for the entire 9:15-11:15 period. We use this session for playing back final projects.
- Final exam session for the T/Th Intermediate Electronic Music class and special projects students at 11:30-1:30. Please note that this is one hour earlier than the usual class time and on a completely different day. We use this session for playing back final projects.
Please note that you are required to attend the scheduled final exam sessions as per college policy and the green sheet for your class.

Office Hour Change - 3/21/12
I was delayed in getting to campus this morning and as a result I missed
the first part of my scheduled 8:30 a.m. office hour. I have scheduled a
make-up office hour for today at 12:00-12:30.

Lab Time Opportunities
As we approach the end of the winter term, the main focus of the electronic music classes is the completion of final projects. I know that some of you would like to have additional lab time. You may come in and use open computers during any electronic music class. Here is a summary of remaining class sessions - along with a note about the extended open lab on Thursday:
- Tuesday 3/20 at 12:30-2:15*
- Wednesday 3/21 at 12:30-2:30*
and continuing at 2:30-4:00 - Thursday 3/22 at 12:30-2:15*
- Friday 3/23 at 10:30-2:15*
- Monday 3/26 at 12:30-2:15*
* I may be able to keep the lab open a few minutes longer on these days. What about additional open lab during the final exam schedule period between Tuesday 3/27 and Friday 3/30? I may be able to open the lab for an hour or two on one of the afternoons during this period, perhaps on Tuesday or Wednesday. Unfortunately, due to schedule issues that I won't know about until later on I cannot say for sure that these sessions will be available nor can I yet specify days/times. I will announce these via email to the class and by posting on the class web site - so watch for announcements at the last moment!

Spring Quarter Electronic Music Classes
There will only be two electronic music sections during the spring quarter. (You know the story... budget reductions... :-(
The two sections we will offer include:
- Music 51: Introduction to Electronic Music on Monday/Wednesday at 12:30-2:20 in A91
- Music 8: Intermediate Electronic Music on Tuesday/Thursday at 12:30-2:20 in A91
I am quite certain that we will be unable to accommodate all students who want to take the Introduction class (Music 51) since we typically offer two sections
each quarter. If you are thinking of taking this class - or have a
friend who is planning to take it - early registration is going to be a
good idea! When the class fills, you have a couple options:
- Get
your name on the waiting list and be sure to come to the first class
meeting. I am almost always able to add a few students, and those on the
waiting list who are in class on the first day will be the first to
have a chance to take the open seats.
- If you have some previous experience with electronic music hardware/software you may be able to enroll straight into the Intermediate class. Give this a try if you are pretty certain that you would qualify.
For this reason and because students from both previous terms
may be trying to enroll in Music 8, I encourage all students who want to
enroll in Intermediate Electronic Music to also do so as soon as possible.

Intermediate Electronic Music - Change of Plans Regarding Assignment 7
Assignment #7 (Intermediate class only) has you excerpting audio from larger audio source files, editing this audio, than then using it to create sample instruments in Reason's NN-XT and NN-19. At this point in the term, I do not think that it is a good idea for us to spend additional time on this assignment, since it is now very important to reserve sufficient time to finish the final project. With this in mind, please do not work on assignment #7. Instead, get to work on your final project - but be sure to incorporate one Reason instrument (NN-XT or NN-19) into your final project that uses samples that you create in the manner described for assignment 7.

MW Class and Assignment #6
If you do not finish assignment #6 by the end of the period today, you have two choices.
- Use "open lab" during the TTh class tomorrow and finish it before coming to class on Wednesday, and play it back at the start of Wednesday's class.
- Rather than finishing #6, continue on to the final project and be sure to include the requirements of #6 in your final project - primarily this means that you must include two rhythmic audio loops that start with different tempos in your final project.
Do not continue to work on these assignments after today. The primary task now is to complete a final project, and that work needs to come before additional work on the other assignments.

Use That Memory Stick!
Since many of you will end up using one of the other class time or the Wednesday "open lab" to do extra work on your final project, make a habit of copying your entire folder to a memory stick at the end of every class session.

Important Reminders as the End of the Term Approaches
After this week, there are only two more weeks of classes before final exam week. (Keep in mind that Monday of finals week is a regular class day!) There is a lot to do yet, and it is important to stay on schedule and anticipate upcoming deadlines.
- For all electronic music classes, the primary task during the next two weeks is the completion of your final project. If you have not already started it, you must plan to do so no later than the first class meeting of week 9 (March 12-16).
- While there will be just enough time to complete a final project, you may want more. Plan to come in during the other electronic music classes and/or during the extended Wednesday afternoon open lab.
- In the Intermediate class we also will use some of each remaining class meeting for class presentations. In order to do this efficiently - and retain as much lab work time as possible - it is important that you be ready to go on your scheduled presentation day.
- In the Intro classes we have two upcoming due dates for quizzes - see the quiz page for specific information.
- Also in the Intro classes there is a second test. See the course green sheet calendar for tentative scheduling.
- All electronic music classes will meet at the scheduled final exam sessions for playback of final projects. As per the course green sheets, attendance at these sessions is required, and there are serious grade consequences if you miss the final. See green sheet for more information.

Classes are designed for music majors, students in other fields who want to learn more about music software and hardware, general interest students, and others. We offer as many as three sections of electronic music each term. Enroll early to make sure that you get a spot since we have reduced the number of available sections during some terms due to budget reductions. Music Tech Classroom
The De Anza Music Department has a state of the art music classroom providing access to music software and hardware for students in a variety of classes including electronic music, comprehensive musicianship, music fundamentals, and more. Student workstations include: Korg X50 keyboard, Apple 20" iMac, Logic Pro, Reason, Protools LE, Sibelius, Garage Band.
Electronic Music Classes Three sections of electronic music are typically offered each term - though due to budget cuts we have made some reductions. See the listing below to determine when each section is currently scheduled. (F = Fall, W = Winter, S = Spring):
