Intro to Electronic Music Course Info

Introduction to Electronic Music covers basic synthesizer operation and terminology, drum manchine techniques, and MIDI computer-based sequencing. Students use software including Garage Band and Logic Pro to create music/audio projects. The class is open to all students with no prerequisites, although some previous music experience or concurrent enrollment in a beginning music class may be helpful.

This course is taken by a variety of students, including those who

  • are thinking about acquiring electronic music hardware and software and would like to know more before making purchases.
  • plan to use electronic music techniques to create their own music.
  • need to learn more about synthesizers and electronic music hardware and software that they already use.
  • play keyboards and would like to learn more about the use of electronic keyboards.
  • would like to learn how to use electronic music techniques in conjunction with skills from another discipline such as film/TV or computer science.
  • want to know more about MIDI

Introduction to Electronic Music
3 units

Advisory: READ 201 and EWRT 100A or LART 200 or ESL 161-163. Two hours lecture and two hours lecture/laboratory

Introduction to the use of keyboard synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencing software to create music in a variety of styles; basic studio techniques; introduction to Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI); introduction to basic historical developments in electronic music; creation of music/audio projects using basic electronic music hardware and software. Some prior music experience is recommended but not required.
