Syllabus - Distance Learning Hybrid (aka simplified "green sheet") for ICS 7 /Spch 7 (Intercultural Communication)
Each unit includes an online reading, an online discussion and an online review quiz (see above).
Required Materials / Internet Access:
Course Packet (CP) for Intercultural Communication – McNulty (about $10.00). Information on how to purchase announced at first meeting… not sold through the De Anza Bookstore.
NOTE: NO TEXT BOOK needed. All readings will be online or handouts. The CP contains materials needed for in-class activities.
Internet Access is needed for course. High speed access is highly recommended, though not essential. You must be able to log on several times each week. Online Discussions will run for 7 days, online Midterm and Final for 4 days (3-4 in Summer). Navigation of Catalyst online learning software will be demonstrated at first meeting.
Course Skill Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
a) Separate fact from interpretation and evaluation when describing others’ behaviors
b) Define and give examples of the major values / world views which guide human behavior around the globe
c) Explain the impact on IC of ethnocentrism, prejudice and discrimination, privilege, colonial history and historical oppression.
d) Demonstrate a working knowledge of key concepts and terms used to analyze intercultural communication
e) Demonstrate decisive, reflective and receptive communication styles so as to be appropriate and effective in different cultural contexts
f) Modify spoken English when communicating with English language learners
g) Leverage bicultural skills and/or state the advantages of culture code switching
h) Coach others in alternative communication behaviors to facilitate effective intercultural interaction
