ESL 251Welcome to ESL 251!
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to help you improve your listening and speaking skills. In this class, you will discuss and analyze topics in American culture and note cultural differences. You will also develop vocabulary appropriate in both formal and informal situations and present speeches on topics related and discussed in class.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
In this class, you will:
1. Use appropriate spoken American English on a variety of topics;
2. Use appropriate spoken American English grammar with allowance for a few gross errors in verb tenses (making errors is a good way to learn, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes!);
3. Listen to, comprehend and answer questions based on both literal and implied meaning in extended taped or authentic spoken discourse including lectures, newscasts, conversations, and stories;
4. Discuss and analyze American customs and cultural attitudes by comparing and contrasting them with the your own culture and customs; and
5. Produce American stress and intonation patters and comprehensibly pronounce words, phrases, and sentences appropriate to given situations.

3. A good English-English dictionary, such as Longman Dictionary of American English
4. A thin lightweight folder with pockets for your portfolio/listening log

Passing: A = 90 -100 B = 80 - 89 C = 70 - 79
Not Passing: D = 65 -69 F = Below 65

Also, for extra help, I strongly encourage you to go to the Tutorial/Skills Center in L47. The Tutorial Center offers free individual, drop-in, and group tutoring. If you are interested in a self-paced independent study course in reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, grammar or speaking, you can sign up for a Skills class. For more info, go to L47. They are very helpful!! I also strongly recommend the listening/speaking lab in ATC 304. If you really want to improve your listening/speaking skills, you need to practice, practice, practice and ATC 304 will give you the chance to do that!
