Biography

I received my Bachelor's degree in English from CSU, Chico, and my Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from San Jose State University. Before I entered the teaching profession, I was a writer and copy editor for a popular young woman's magazine, and I also spent some time as a writer and communications specialist for a marketing group. Though I enjoyed certain aspects of the publishing world, I decided to pursue my true calling, teaching. I left publishing and moved to Prague in the Czech Republic to teach English. I realized that I not only love teaching but I love teaching English to speakers of other languages. My favorite part of teaching ESL is meeting people from all over the world and learning about different cultures. Now, I am thrilled to be teaching ESL at De Anza and living near the beach with my husband, daughter, and superdog, Cutty.

Maria and Julie: I teach ESL 72, Advanced Reading and Vocabulary, and Maria (on the right) teaches ESL 24, Introduction to the Essay. We look forward to seeing you in our linked ESL 24-72 class. Maria (on the right) and I teach the ESL 172-173 linked classes.
