Academic Requirements: Students are responsible for all textbook reading assignments and full participation in all class discussions. Attendance is very important for this course and will be graded appropriately. To be counted as present for each class you must be in attendance for roll call, which will take place at each class. The instructor reserves the right to drop students who miss more than three (3) classes. Point deductions for attendance credits begin after missing more than two (2) classes: (-10 points per class missed). Extra credit points will be given for high attendance rates as follows:

Attendance is defined as being in class for the entire period. The instructor reserves the right to make point deductions for being late or leaving early

Team Case Study Exercises: The class will be broken down into several self-managed teams. During the Quarter each team will be responsible for analyzing several Leadership case study situations and coming up with a plan of action.

Each team will elect a team leader. It will be the responsibility of the team leader to facilitate discussions of the issues involved in each case study. A suggested framework of analysis will be presented by the Instructor during the Quarter. The question to be answered for each case is “What will you do?” While working toward a plan of action each team should initially come up with several alternative action plans before selecting the final action plan.

During the quarter each team will make a presentation on their action plan on a particular case study. During these presentations every team member is required to directly participate in presentations sometime along the way. This will give everyone the practice of making presentations before a group. This is an important skill to develop (no matter what your profession) and we will do this in a supportive environment for all presenters.

The homework for this class consists of keeping up with your reading, working on your team case studies and some time in out-of-class team meetings. Each team should establish good internal communications and meeting schedules to make certain that all case study work is accomplished and on time.

GAPS Analysis: It is the responsibility of each student to conduct their own GAPS analysis during the Quarter. This is part of your final examination grade. It must be turned in on or before the final examination day. Please research this development technique in the Advanced Leadership Skills section of the book. We will discuss this self-development exercise in detail during the course.

Procedures & Words of Advice

Please keep up with your reading. The pages and chapters covered for each class are listed and you should have read these pages before each class--your understanding and class participation will be greatly enhanced by being current on your reading. Students may be chosen at random in class to relate concepts they have learned from the reading assignment. Keeping notes as you read and/or highlighting key passages will assist you in your presentation when called upon.

Cheating will not be tolerated. If cheating occurs, a grade of F will be assigned. Also, a letter to the Dean will be sent explaining this action. During all quizzes please spread out around the room with empty spaces to your left and right. Please keep your Scantron forms face down except when answering questions.

Please respect your fellow students. Listen attentively to what they have to say. Be considerate in your comments. An objective of the class is to make all participants feel comfortable and to encouraged active participation and expression of opinions.
