InfoM ED, English Education
ED D, Language Education, Univ. of Georgia
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. In 1985, I came to the US with my husband and my 3 ½ year-old son to further my education. Though I majored in Geography when I was an undergrad in Hong Kong, I was fascinated by linguistics (the study and analyses of languages) and the theories/methods for teaching English as a Second Language when I started my graduate studies at the University of Georgia. In 1986, I earned a Master’s Degree in English Education. Then, I entered the University’s doctoral program in language education, specializing in the teaching of writing to ESL students. In 1991, I received my doctoral degree in Language Education.
At De Anza College, I teach a variety of ESL classes. Mostly, I teach ESL 5 (Advanced Composition and Reading), ESL 24 (Introduction to Essay), ESL 72 (Advanced Reading and Vocabulary), and ESL 161 (Low Advanced Listening and Speaking). Prior to Winter 2002, I directed the ESL Lab in the College Readiness Program, but I am now teaching in the classroom full time. Prior to joining De Anza in 1995, I taught at San Jose State University and two other universities on the East Coast. I had also directed the American Language Institute at the University of Connecticut.
My family includes four people, two dogs, and one cat. Each one is quite a character.
Husband, Balance: loving and dedicated; hair tied up in a pony tail.
14-year old daughter, Athena: beautiful and lovely but difficult to
raise.
20-year old son, Dawnis: a sophomore at Stanford; a bright guy
but just has time to say "hi, bye" each
day.
Roxy: two year-old black lab and springer-spaniel mix; good-
looking with a shiny black coat; plays basket ball and
loves to jump high up in the air to catch a tennis ball.
Homer: four-month-old puppy; sand color and very cute.
Oreo: five-year-old black and white cat (half of his nose is black
and half white); he will scratch you whenever he has a
chance.
As for Clara: You will find out about her when you take her class.
