DE ANZA COLLEGE

ESL 251 High Intermediate Listening and Speaking

Fall 2006

Instructor: ANGELINA KHAN

E-mail: angelinakhan@yahoo.com

Classroom: L 64

Voice mail: (408) 864-8999 x. 3044

Time: Th. 6:00 – 8:40 PM

Office Hour: Th. after class

Prerequisites: ESL 244 or qualifying score on the ESL Placement Test. Restricted to students whose native language is not English.

Course Description: Development of listening and speaking practice in a variety of contexts; development of vocabulary appropriate in both formal and informal situations; discussion and analysis of topics in American culture and cultural differences.

Required Texts and Materials: Kozyrev, Talk It Through! (with either CD or tape)

Grading: Class Participation 10% Presentations/Speeches 25% Homework 20% Quizzes25% Final 20% Extra credit (CCP) 10%

Attendance: You have a better chance to succeed in the class if you attend regularly. There will be announced and unannounced quizzes, and missing them will lower your grade eventually. If you miss more than one class meeting, you may be dropped. If you have two or more absences (for whatever reason), you may be dropped or your final course grade may be lowered one full mark (i.e., B to C).

No make-up finals will be given. If you are not in class on your presentation date or you are not prepared, you will receive a grade of zero for that presentation. If you have a serious problem, contact your instructor as soon as possible.

If you decide to drop the class, it is your responsibility to formally drop the class in the Administration Building. If you miss a class in the first two weeks of the quarter without contacting your instructor, you will be dropped from the class.

Being late to class is not courteous, and consistent tardiness will result in a lower grade for class participation. In addition, being late three times is considered as one absence. When in class, please make all noise-making devices (such as cell phones and pagers) inaudible.

Participation: You will have many opportunities to work together in pairs and small groups. You should make every effort to participate in all classroom activities. Please speak only English in the classroom! If you get caught speaking a language other than English, you will have to bring the whole class a treat. J Homework: It is very important to come to the class prepared. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out from your classmates what your home assignment is. Being absent from class is not an excuse for not turning in your homework on time. All homework needs to be complete by the time you come to class.

Optional participation in De Anza’s Cross-Cultural Partners program (for extra credit): You will be matched with a partner (not from this class) who is from another culture. Your will meet with your partner for at least five hours during this quarter. You will keep a written journal about your meetings in which you will summarize what you and your CCP partner discussed at each meeting. If you have five meetings, you will write five journal entries. Each journal entry needs to be typed, double-spaced, size 12 font, at least half a page in length. In the upper left-hand corner of each journal entry, you need to state: 1) the number of your meeting (first, second, etc.); 2) the date; 3) the time; 4) the duration; and 5) the location of your meeting.

In addition, after these five journal entries, on a separate sheet of paper please write about your overall experience with the program. (Has your attitude to the program changed throughout the quarter? Do you think you made a new friend? What did you learn from the program/your partner? Would you participate in the program again? Would you recommend this program to other students? Has the program improved your listening and speaking skills?) Please turn in all your paperwork related to CCP at the end of the quarter.

Academic Dishonesty:

Cheating on quizzes and exams is a serious offense, and will be treated accordingly. Cheating on exams/quizzes includes the following: communicating with any person other than the instructor, looking into another student’s work, using written material other than the exam, and using an electronic device such as a computer or electronic dictionary.

You may not turn in any work that is not your own or copy anything from anywhere or anyone.

Should any of this happen, the first time you will receive a grade of zero (0) for the assignment, exam, or quiz. The second time your course grade will be lowered one full mark (for example, a “C” instead of a “B”). The third time you may be asked to drop the course/receive a failing grade in the course.
